In his essay “GENETIC INTERVENTIONS AND THE ETHICS OF ENHANCEMENT OF HUMAN BEINGS” by Julian Savulescu, the author supports the belief that genetic enhancement will become a channel to improve the quality of human lives (Savulescu, 879). Savulescu begins by raising the question of whether or not we should use medical technology for more than just curing diseases by suggesting to improve human lives by interceding on a biological level. He states that it is a morally accepted practice to improve or release one's suffering through medicine. If this is true, it would be permissible to intercede on a biological level if it does the same thing as treating disease. Savulescu main argument is that:1) biologically enhancing our children would …show more content…
Savulescu points to the fact that environmental factors have consistently manipulated our genes through life experiences (destructive or beneficial) and that these manipulations has influenced our potential success. He supports enhancement by indicating that there is no difference between environmental and biological influences. Both alter our genes but only one is morally accepted (Savulescu, 882). This seems contradictory because it would be morally wrong for humans to not treat a disease because we would be creating more harm than good, so we accept treatment. If genetic intervention could isolate the destructive gene and eradicating the disease, then there is less harm. It should not matter how the procedure is done, as long as it creates more good (Savulescu, 882). Likewise, genetic enhancement is natural, it has been happening for thousands of years. Cross breeding plants and animals ended with the most advantageous organisms (Savulescu, 880). Treatment of disease by medicine saved, improved and extend millions of lives. Imagine the profound effects of a better health! It would allow us to participate in unlimited activities that creates happiness (Savulescu, 882). Also, is human nature to ease suffering whether it is through selective breeding or genetic enhancement, as long as it results in more good, there should be no
