If someone is trying to convince masses of people is it even possible and if so how would they do it? Both Brutus and Antony had to overcome obstacles the size of mountains so they had to use logos, ethos, and pathos. They also used fallacies in their speeches to influence the people of rome. There are many examples of these throughout both of the speeches. Antony’s speech was the most influential to the people’s decision because he used the persuasion techniques better and more effectively than Brutus. Brutus used mainly logos and ethos in his speech which influenced the people first but Antony’s still was a better influencer. One example of this is when Brutus says, “Had you rather Caesar were living, and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?” (III,ii,23). Brutus …show more content…
Antony says, “Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me.” (III,ii,107). Antony says this to make the people feel sympathy for him and get their emotions going to show that caesar didn’t deserve to die. Antony also uses logos when he says, “I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he did thrice refuse. Was this ambition?” (III,ii,98). This is logos because Antony is saying if Caesar refused a crown 3 time then this is not ambitiousness, but Antony knew Caesar did this to make himself look even greater. The speeches were both very influential with the people of rome but they can only join one side, and after a certain number of people were with Antony everyone else jumped on the bandwagon and followed Antony into war. Both Antony and Brutus knew how to influence people but Antony was better and smarter. He used pathos which is the most effective persuasion technique. They both used ethos in a very smart way but still Antony was better. So overall Antony’s speech got people to join his side and they followed him into a civil

Ethos Pathos Logos In Julius Caesar

...Shakespeare uses Aristotle's three appeals; ethos, pathos, and logos, to help the audience with the literature. Etho or ethical appeal gives the audience a sense of credibility and lets them know. Ethos is a way to convince the audience that whomever is talking is worth listening to. Pathos is the way the author/character appeals emotionally to the audience. By showing and relating to emotion the audience is easier persuaded. Logos is a logic appeal which convinces the audience through logic or reasonable facts. Caesar’s funeral scene when Brutus and Antony give a speech give plenty of appeal to the audience. When Brutus starts his speech he tells the listeners, “believe me for mine honor, and have respect to mine honor, that you may believe…” By using the word ‘believe’ Brutus is giving credit to himself, which is ethos. In other words he is telling the audience, “I am a believable man, so trust what I am saying.” By using starting the speech like this is makes the audience listen right of the bat. Another time when Brutus uses the emotional appeal is when he is speaking of Caesar. Brutus’ main point is that he loved Caesar but he loves Rome more. He goes on to explain, “as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honor him.” This quote is showing both...

...In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar caesar was killed by conspired because people were scared that he would become too powerful. Right after he was assassinated Brutus made a speech to help calm the people and explain and persuade that it was a good thing that they killed him. Antony, one of Caesar's best friends also spoke to the crowd. He was not aloud to speak bad about the conspirators and he had to whatever brutus said. Brutus was using logos because because he was saying that it Caesar would someday let the power get to his head and become evil. He wanted to kill him before he ever had the chance to become a dictator. He also used ethos because he was talking about how he is proud to be a roman and he didn't want them to become slaves from caesar. He said that he loved caesar but he loved the city more. Antony's Use Of Ethos In Julius Caesar

...Tragedy of Julius Caesar written by William Shakespeare, Mark Antony uses his words to change the perspective of the commoners about the horrid death of their former commander Julius Caesar. Throughout the play, the commoners are found changing their minds on issues constantly and can be swayed just by words spoken by Antony. The intentional use of rhetoric used by Antony at Caesar’s own funeral persuades the commoners to revolt against the senators. Throughout Antony’s speech, he uses all three modes of persuasion (ethos, pathos, and logos) to make his funeral orientation a success. Ethos is a key point in making Antony an influential speaker towards his audience. Antony’s use of ethos helps convince the commoners to take his side and influences the commoners. When Antony explains how much of a friend he was to Caesar, he convinces the audience of how qualified he is to speak at Caesar’s funeral. Antony states, “Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral. / He was my friend, faithful and just to me;” (III.ii.85-86). Antony explains to the commoners that he has in fact been one of Caesar’s noblest men, an honorable friend....

Effective Use Of Rhetorical Devices In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

...In the play “Julius Caesar” Antony uses the rhetorical devices ethos, pathos, and logos to help persuade the people of Rome to trust him. He tugs at the Roman’s heart strings when he explains how amazing and thoughtful Caesar was. He says examples of how he put Rome and the Roman people before anything else and how devastating it is now that he was murdered. He tells stories about him helping the starving and hungry people of Rome and how their unhappiness and sorrow reflected on him.He repeatedly stated that Brutus was an honorable man, but his actions were wrong and that Rome has lost an honourable and devoting leader. This, without a doubt, shows his amazing use of pathos throughout his speech. He makes the people of Rome trust what he saying by stating honourable facts about Caesar which shows the usage of both ethos and logos. Brutus Persuasion

...Marcus Brutus and Marc Antony’s speeches     “Character may almost be called the most effective means of persuasion”- Aristotle.  This quote could be interpreted in different ways, but I feel it means when someone shows leadership and passion others will mostlikely follolw them.  In Julius Caesar there is a huge example of persuasion, and that is the speeches of both Brutus and Antony.  Antony’s speech was based mainly around pathos (emotion).  Whereas, Brutus went for more of a logic and ethic approach (logos and ethos).  Both of these speeches were filled with a variety of devices, techniques, and even mistakes.  Which leads to the final question, whose speech was more successful?     Antony’s speech was based on emotion.  This is because...

Use Of Ethos In Julius Caesar

...In the play Julius Caesar, both Brutus and Antony write speeches after Caesars death at his funeral. After comparing both men's use of ethos, logos, and pathos, it is clear to the crowd that Brutus is the more persuasive speaker. Even though Brutus’ speech was more persuasive, Antony also uses ethos, logos, and pathos in his funeral speech as well. Both men's speeches are similar in ways. Both Brutus’ and Antony's speeches contain ethos. In the play, Brutus says, “Believe me for mine honor, and have respect to mine honor that you may believe.” (Act iii SC II). He also says, “Here comes his body, mourned by Mark Antony who, though he had no hand in his death shall receive the benefit.” (Act iii SC II). This shows that Brutus killed Caesar for the benefit of Rome and its people. In the play Antony uses ethos by stating, “It will inflame you, it will make you mad.” (Act iii SC II). How Does Brutus Use Ethos In Julius Caesar

...If killing someone meant helping the people around you, would you do it? The Tragedy of Julius Caesar portrays an endless amount of betrayal, flaws, and defeat between many characters, inevitably causing death for most of those characters. Brutus' funeral speech is most effective due to his use of logos, pathos, and ethos. Brutus powerfully uses logos in his funeral speech for Caesar. For example, when Brutus says, "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more;” Brutus is very skeptical about the plan of the conspirators to kill Caesar. When he finally joined, he is convinced that he is doing this deed for nothing more than the good of Rome; Caesar was too ambitious and would soon become a tyrant. His ambition causes distress for the entire city of Rome; "death for his ambition." Caesar was becoming too powerful, and it would soon do no good for Rome as Brutus explains in his speech....
