...Austin Williams College Essay Last year I went through a gargantuan obstacle, the most difficult one of my life. My entire life is dedicated to the wonderful sport of basketball. My junior year I worked harder, and more ambitiously than I had ever worked previously. I worked extremely hard on my skills, and game to assure my spot as the starting point guard on my high school’s varsity team. When the season came around things were looking just as I imagined. I was the starting guard on the team, the leader, and the player who made things happen on the court. I proved my abilities, dedication, and why I should have stayed in the position, I was in as the starting PG on varsity. Unfortunately, in my head basketball coaches eyes I was not yet ready to be a leader on his team. He told me that I needed to develop some better leadership skills, and work on my attitude. Then he dropped the bomb on me. He told me he was moving me down to JV for my junior season so I could take that team over and become a grand leader. That literally broke my heart, I knew I worked harder than everyone on that varsity team, well I actually knew I worked harder than every soul in the basketball program. ...the court from the separating black lines I stare up at the scoreboard. The clock reads 10 seconds left. My team is down by 1 point 45 to 46. We need just one basket and we are out of time-outs. The play was set for me to shoot it. I was not confident. My teammate inbounds the ball to me as I yell for the shot. Planting my feet just between the three-point line and free-throw line I get the orange, spherical ball into my hands. Gazing at the clock for a second, time was running out. My fingertips place themselves on the grooves of the ball for the perfect shot. The only objects I see are two lengthy defenders rushing at me to block my shot. I quickly jump reaching as high as I could with the ball I raise my hands releasing it before the defenders could block it with two seconds left on the clock. The ball spinning in the air, amazingly hits it’s target swishing into the hoop, winning the game for my team. It was my second year trying out for the basketball team at Tesoro High School. The gym had not changed, it had clean floors, the basketball hoops for pristine, the nets on the hoops we’re shiny white, and the basketballs, were brand new that when you touched the ball it had amazing grip like having rubber gloves on. We just found out we were getting a new coach for the Junior Varsity team, which I was aiming for. However both are known as baseball legends, they offer their differences and similarities amongst not only by their careers but by their personal lives. During the course of the internship, I got to know Ms. Lilly a lot better as she became more comfortable with me working with her in the classroom. Ms. Lilly teaches a variety of grade levels. She teaches 9th grade Honors English, 10th Grade AVID, a mixed grades writing seminar elective, and 12th grade AP English. Ms. Lilly had been teaching for 19 years at this high school. She received her credential at Loyola Marymount University. She began teaching because she loves English and loves working with kids. She thought it would be fun to combine the both together. I noticed that the biggest challenges for Ms. Lilly in the classroom are class size and having access to technology. Ms. Lilly said that classes in the past for 9th and 10th grade used to be limited to 20 students to 1 teacher ratio. The goal of this is to establish a strong foundation for the students before entering the larger class sizes of the upper grades. She has 29 students in her first period and 33 students in her fifth period.
