...1-888-Junk Van Executive Summary This case study examines issues associated with virtual businesses. In an effort to reduce costs, the founder, Kingo, creates a virtual business model that significantly reduces the need for overhead costs, such as office space. Employees work remotely and via electronic connections. Although this promotes a flexible work environment, the lack of a physical structure creates some issues. As the business grew, so did customer service errors and issues, causing the company to lose sales. Kingo decided the company needed a more sophisticated yet affordable IT system to capture the great amounts of customer and account information his company was gathering. The case goes on to identify and discuss the merits of five possible IT solutions. From this information I have determined that the PaaS system is JUNKVAN’s best IT solution. The IT Options This company has several options for IT systems that are not too complicated to implement, would be flexible and could grow with the company, and will not require a dedicated IT staff member to maintain. The first option would be creating a totally custom application. This option would be the most expensive to develop and maintain as Kingo would really “own” this product from inception and wold not be able to see the product until it was finished. The second option would be to use Microsoft Database. This option would be an easy upgrade and much cheaper for the company with limited licensing...

...leading countries with the most overweight people. There are many parents who are unaware of the situation and do not have enough information to address this issue. As Michelle Obama is trying to get schools to eat healthier, the responsibility lies in the parents because what children eat at home also affect their weight. Research shows that being obese or overweight is linked to risks of chronic disease, disability, death, and decreased productivity and quality of life. These individuals have high risk of hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, etc. And that Child obesity increases the risk of having heart disease and stroke before they turn 30. Studies have also found that more children are eating away from home, snacking in between meals, consuming more junk food, and the lack of exercise due to more TV time can lead to being overweight and obesity. A survey was done and one of the findings that were expected was the correlation between more TV hours and the effect on the weight of the children. It was confirmed with the surveys received that as TV hours went up, weight also went up. It also holds true that children don’t eat as much fruits and vegetable servings as recommended. Parents need to reshape their thinking about the way they live to help prevent or reduce obesity in their children. Parents should be aware that what the kids do or eat at home has a direct effect on the children’s weight as well as their own. If parents...

...abundance of forms, regarding ocean garbage, coral reefs and oil spills over a twenty-five year period have caused our oceans’ ecology suffering to escalate. Incidents regarding a floating garbage patch in the Pacific, even cruise ships repeating sewage and garbage dumping are atrocious. The problem is, most people do not pay attention and take situations such as these as non-existent. Evidence documented over decades suggest our oceans’ trouble will continue unless change happens sooner rather than later. Change in how we respond to problems should not take years for resolution, because some of the damage may be minute and builds up over time, while some comes in big bunches that there is not time to waste in resolving. In some of these cases, years elapsed before any significant progress had been made, resulting in more damage than first observed. The problems have similarities and differences, while causes are mostly humans deciding to abuse the ecosystem, and solutions do not come easy. However, we must come together in order to create solutions for fixing oceans and other waterways more quickly than ever to save them, such as our precious coral reefs and the underwater wildlife that they call home.. Less then 0.1 % of the ocean’s surface provides a home...

...Strategic Uncertainty and Alternative Futures: Evaluating Our Options in the Post-September 11 World Eric K. Clemons Steve Barnett 23 April 2003 Draft 3.6 1. Introduction Our perception of our world changed dramatically on September 11, 2001. Our sense of safety, security, and certainty were altered, perhaps for years to come, perhaps for the rest of our professional lives. Although it is clear that our personal, political, and business environments have all been altered, it is not immediately clear how they have been changed; this is, it is not clear what the details of these changes will be, or how we must respond. We now live in a period of greater strategic uncertainty. This brief paper summarizes the results of two workshops held by the Reginald H. Jones Center that attempted to provide some insight into the origins of the current conflict that the U.S. faces in the Middle East, as religious (Islam vs. the West) or economic (the developed West vs. the developing Middle East), or a clash of cultures, or some other form not as yet identified1. The hope was that by developing an understanding of the origins of the conflict, we would develop some insights into the form of the conflict and its duration; this in turn would lead to an understanding of the business implications that might result and strategies that might provide appropriate responses in different strategic contexts. We faced a high level of uncertainty about what had happened and what was likely to happen...

...Historically, the main reason for the addition of salt to food was for preservation. Because of the emergence of refrigeration and other methods of food preservation, the need for salt as a preservative has decreased, but sodium levels, especially in processed foods, remain high. The expected tastes and flavors associated to salt use is enormous coupled with the relative low cost of enhancing the palatability of processed foods, thus making it a key rationale for salt use in food preservation. However, taste is not the only reason for the continued use of high levels of salt in foods. For some foods, sodium still plays a role in reducing the growth of pathogens and organisms that spoil products and reduce their shelf life. In other applications, sodium levels remain high because salt plays additional functional roles, such as improving texture. A number of other sodium-containing compounds are also used for increasing the safety and shelf life of foods or creating physical properties. This work begins with a review of the non-taste or flavor-related roles of salt and other sodium-containing compounds in food. The second part will briefly discuss the role that sodium plays in various food categories and provides examples of the sodium content of various foods. ------------------------------------------------- FOOD SAFETY AND PRESERVATION ------------------------------------------------- As mentioned previously, the first major addition of salt to food was for taste and...

You've Gotta Have Heart: Achieving Purpose Beyond Profit in the Social Sector. AMACOM. © 2009. People often ask me how the American Heart Association came to the idea of the heart-check seal of approval found on over 800 products on grocery store shelves. This program is a significant piece of the American Heart Association brand, and it is a good example of how we do things in nontraditional ways. There is a certain amount of risk in any program, and in this case we ran into quite a few roadblocks. I believe that in every crisis lies an opportunity, and that was certainly the case with the AHA's food certification program. 3. Rosinski, Philippe. ( 2010). The amount of health care coverage provided to mothers, newborns, and children in low income nations is very minimal compared to high income nations particularly in the United States where health care and...
