The Culture of Dota in the Philippines

...University of the Philippines Diliman The Culture of DOTA in the Philippines Joshua Frankie B. Rayo Department of Computer Science, University of the Philippines Diliman jbrayo@up.edu.ph Abstract. The culture of DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) has taken the Philippines to storm because of its very creative gameplay that caused millions of Filipino students hard for them to avoid playing the game; and it is also evident from media to the internet. This game has brought such intense effects to the Filipino youth and its everyday life; up to the point where they are affected physically, psychologically, and their respective careers. Because of DOTA, the computer shops in the country have been growing massively since its release; the youth are gathered there to play informally and to show their enthusiasm and foster friendship, teamwork and camaraderie. It follows the ‘booming’ computer shop industry and culture in the country. Also, some people handle DOTA tournaments to encourage other people and make this gaming industry to grow in the country. Because of the addiction of the people playing the game, they also express DOTA through the arts and music, language, internet and the social networks. Due to the...

...Why is Anbe Sivam regarded as the best movie in the history of Tamil cinema by many? Did this movie have any story at all? First of all is it a movie? No. Anbe Sivam is an experience, not only for one Madhavan but for another few thousands, who care to learn quite a lot of things and feel conceited about themselves, but fail miserably to confront the vagaries of life. What was the movie all about? An experienced matured man and a squeamish, egotist but tender hearted youth (a typical modern day youth) travelling together from Bhubaneshwar to Chennai(East coast of India).Fate hinders their journey in all possible ways which Madhavan initially considers exasperating but later reveres as an experience of a lifetime. The story is as simple as that but the associated scenes, dialogues and the lessons learnt reverberate through your mind for a long time. Be it the floods, train accident or the little boy's death it is Madhavan who breaks down and get shattered. But Kamalhassan adapts himself and reconciles himself to reality and helps in the best possible way he can. While it takes a lot of effort for Madhavan to tell Kamalhaasan about his fraternal love towards him, Kamalhaasan finds it easy to tell 'A.Ars, you are a go(o)d man' (it's not that easy to tell it to someone earnestly). From where did Kamal get this maturity? The story moves into the flashback of Kamal,a communist, who loves the daughter of a capitalist, Nasser, whom he opposes as a worker regarding wages. When the duo...

Jejemon Fever

...(while playing, texting or commenting), they tried to make messages they type really short to an extent that every word was internally altered using numbers to creatively displace letters that would still make the words readable. Of course, Jejemonism was not that intense and obvious at that time. It took a longer time before the more educated ones realized that something's not right and one thing has to be done - to abide by what is being conventionally dictated by society. At that moment, many of the younger generation became adapted to this kind of typing style for they really thought that it was somehow cool, manageable and widely accepted within their age range. It was the new hip at that time, but as it grew out of nowhere, concerned academic people took this as a threat to the educational standards. In time, Jejemonism became the latest source of boiling social debates. As time propelled and confusion arose, people who got addicted to this type of grammar destruction were termed Jejemons and were subjected to social criticisms. Somehow, they were associated to the Jologs due to the similarities in their style and fashion statement. Not all Jejemons are Jologs since some only type Jejenese but do not wear the same attire the Jologs wear. Also, not all Jologs are Jejemons because Jologs love to use...

Something

...sucker.” This is a common poker saying spoken by Matt Damon in the classic poker movie Rounders. I used to play in a tournament every Sunday night in Costa Rica with some of the best players in the world. Unfortunately, I had no idea at the time who those players were. Hopefully this book will help you spot the sucker rather than be the sucker. It takes a lot of experience and study of the game before one realizes what it takes to play at an advanced level. Everyone needs to start somewhere. This book should increase your learning curve, but there is no substitute for experience. The Internet is an excellent vehicle to develop your game, no matter if you just play low limits a few hours a week or strive to develop into a world-class player. The following story gives you a glimpse into my poker life and the struggles I went through before I started playing on the Internet. My first memory of poker is sneaking out into the woods when I was about eight or nine years old to play penny poker with my friends. In middle school, I remember getting sent to the principal's office for playing craps in the bathroom. In high school, I was assistant manager at a local movie theater and one night my friends and I played poker in the projectionist booth while the movies were playing. To my dismay, the manager decided to show up that night to check up on things. Fortunately, the concession girl quickly alerted us. My friends were going down one staircase as my boss was going up the other one. I had...

Work, Culture and Identity in Mozambique and Southafrica 1860-1910

...Acknowledgments This book owes a great deal to the mental energy of several generations of scholars. As an undergraduate at the University of Cape Town, Francis Wilson made me aware of the importance of migrant labour and Robin Hallett inspired me, and a generation of students, to study the African past. At the School of Oriental and African Studies in London I was fortunate enough to have David Birmingham as a thesis supervisor. I hope that some of his knowledge and understanding of Lusophone Africa has found its way into this book. I owe an equal debt to Shula Marks who, over the years, has provided me with criticism and inspiration. In the United States I learnt a great deal from ]eanne Penvenne, Marcia Wright and, especially, Leroy Vail. In Switzerland I benefitted from the friendship and assistance of Laurent Monier of the IUED in Geneva, Francois Iecquier of the University of Lausanne and Mariette Ouwerhand of the dépurtement évangélrlyue (the former Swiss Mission). In South Africa, Patricia Davison of the South African Museum introduced me to material culture and made me aware of the richness of difference; the late Monica Wilson taught me the fundamentals of anthropology and Andrew Spiegel and Robert Thornton struggled to keep me abreast of changes in the discipline; Sue Newton-King and Nigel Penn brought shafts of light from the eighteenthcentury to bear on early industrialism. Charles van Onselen laid a major part of the intellectual foundations on which I attempt to build. I must...
