Good morning to Miss Liana and fellow classmates, my name is Chua Wen Yee and the topic I’m going to talk about today is K-Pop. First of all, I’ll start off with some basic facts. K-Pop is a musical genre originated from South Korea. The pioneer of K-Pop is Seo Taeji and The Boys, which one of the member is the CEO of YG Entertainment, home of Big Bang and 2NE1 now. K-Pop was strongly criticized by a lot of people, including me. However it has been rising day by day and not only conquered the Asia music market but it is also globalized in the sense that there are K-Pop fans all over the world. According to my research, in year 2012, 68 K-Pop groups made their debut compared to 12 in year 2008. From hate to love, from critics to praise, how does this happened?

I think everyone of you definitely has a friend who is a hardcore K-Pop fan. Most of you must have suffered a lot because they like to share their K-Pop information and ask you to watch funny videos very much. Thanks to them, you’ll slowly found out that you are starting to love K-Pop and soon you’ll become one of them.

Seriously, some of you may wonder why people love K-Pop so much? The reasons are simple. First of all, the songs are really nice. There are three main components in a song, melody, choreography and visual. Catchy and repeated chorus is one of the reasons why K-Pop songs can be viral and popular. For example, “Wow, fantastic baby”, “because I’m shadow, shadow, shadow”, “bwara Mr. simple simple” or “I hate this love song, I hate this love song”. Once you listened to a song, it’ll keep spinning and spinning in your brain like a virus. And have anyone realize that there must be some English words in the chorus? This is the main point, if you’re interested in composing remember to insert some English words in the chorus. There is always a verse of rap in the song, no matter it is hip-hop or ballad.

The key of a choreograph is the point dance. A point dance is the highlight for the dance and the song, they even have names for it. The point dance can also make a song famous just like Gangnam Style and Bar Bar Bar. The point dance must be synchronized with the tempo of the song. It also has to be fitted with the characteristics of the song and easy to catch up so that fans are able to learn it easily.

Music video is the combination of the song, choreography and the story behind. Singers are supposed to unleash their acting skill to make a perfect music video too. Fans nowadays are picky on the music video. A lot of groups just simply put on a music video with motions and dance in different dance floor. While fans prefer to have a drama plotted music video.

Besides, K-Pop artists are known for their sense of fashion. K-Pop artists are the fashion settler now and they create their own style which is one of a kind. Their hairstyles and attires have strongly influenced the teenagers now. The fashion icons are teenagers guide too. For example, when GD has a pink colour hair, a lot of people will dye their hair pink too. When a Girls Generation member wears a t-shirt, the t-shirt will be a hot selling item in all online blogshop for the month. K-Pop artists also invented airport fashion where artists are supposed to be fashionable when travel to another country instead of being comfortable because a lot of fans and paparazzi show up in the airport. To attract more fans, girl groups will wear short pants and sexy clothes to show their perfect body shape and long legs. While boy groups show off their abs and muscle.

The third reasons people love K-Pop is that they have put a lot of effort to be successful. All the idols spent several years for training. They straight away head to the practice room after class every day during their trainee life. For example, G-Dragon was a trainee in SM Entertainment for 5 years before training 6 years in YG Entertainment. Despite, they’ve also went through a lot of hardship before they successfully debut. Some of them even failed to debut several times before. Some of the artists are being singer, actor, DJ and emcee at the same time. Some variety shows such as Running Man requires more than 12 hours filming it. Therefore, all of them have a packed schedule every day and they are often sent to hospital due to lack of rest. A lot of practice is also needed to put on a perfect performance on stage especially for groups with a lot of members such as Super Junior and Girls’ Generation.

Well, after all the good talks about K-Pop, I’m going to show you all another side of K-Pop. We’re currently having some negative issues in this music industry. First of all, lip-sync. Just in case you don’t know what it is, lip-sync is the way we perform singing by matching lip movements to sung vocals. Lip-sync has been a culture for a lot of K-Pop groups on stage performance. The reason they do so is to emphasise on the dance, which means they are not capable to make singing and dancing perfect at the same time. Some of them also did it to cover illness. In my opinion, lip-sync is an immoral behaviour. It is the same as cheating to fans. So, I’m strongly against this culture.

Plagiarism and lack of originality is another serious issue in the Korean music market. There are some Korean artists being ambitious to make their music international. Therefore, some of them started with American hip-hop. In this case, an inspired music may become a plagiarised song. There are also some companies buying composed tracks instead of making one which is tailored for the artist. Besides, when certain style or theme is popular a lot of them use the same idea. This is an unhealthy competition for a music market. Chorus with repeated melody is the main characteristic of K-Pop song, it also means that it can’t be popular without it. There are some comments on Super Junior songs, Sorry Sorry music can be played with Mr. Simple music video without people realising it, which means they are doing the same music again and again. And one day, people will start getting bored of K-Pop.

I’m not sure whether you guys have heard of this before that being a fan is an occupation. A fangirl like me has no life. My brain, my heart and even my blood is all about K-Pop. Idols are always our first concern. K-Pop groups have several projects a year. They even have all different kinds of album: studio album, repackaged album, mini album, single album. Each of them cost at least RM50. Besides album, they release photobooks and official goods. Fans also have to spend for ticket to their concerts and fanclub member annual fees. It is such a big amount in total for a teenager. There are even five music shows every week. After all these fangirling, they have no time for study.

In conclusion, K-Pop is a culture which lead us to a whole new world. In K-Pop, I learnt that we can always be different and make critical changes in our life if it is needed. K-Pop songs and variety shows are really entertaining and enjoying. K-Pop artists who brought so much fun to our life are also worth for our love and respect. However, besides all these entertainment, we should always concentrate on our study and job. We shouldn’t waste too much money on all this entertainment stuff. At the end of my presentation, I would like to say I Love Kpop.

...example known as "Simcheongga".[note 1] During the Japanese rule (1910–1945) popularity of changga songs rose as Koreans tried to express their feelings against Japanese oppression through music. One of the most popular songs was "Huimangga" (희망가, The Song of Hope). The Japanese confiscated the existing changga collections and published lyrics books of their own.[41][third-party source needed] The first known Korean pop album was "Yi Pungjin Sewol" (This Tumultuous Time) by Park Chae-seon and Lee Ryu-saek from 1925 and contained popular songs translated from Japanese. The first pop song written by a Korean composer is thought to be "Nakhwayusu" (낙화유수, Fallen Blossoms on Running Water) sung by Lee Jeong-suk in 1929.[41] In the mid-1920s, Japanese composer Masao Koga mixed traditional Korean music with Gospel music that American Evangelists introduced in the 1870s. We can also see why Korea becomes a huge entertainment empire in such a short time. From this passage, I get three main reasons which can explain what makes SM so powerful. Firstly, SM coined its own music and performance style called SMP genre. The author also explains this term via some artists of SM like H.O.T, Super Junior. SMP genre is the unique element that sets SM apart from the others in the industry. SM created the term in the mid-90’s with H.O.T, SMP combines rock and R&B with hip-hop beats allowing for very strong dance performances. The music videos are more important than the music. They are attractive enough to make a person’s head spin with insane dance routines, and more sparkly bells-and-whistles fanfare than you even imagine. SMP genre not only works for the domestic audiences but also letting worldwide fans indulging themselves in the business. The author also explains how Chinese, Japanese and French fans are crazy for those young boys and girls.
