...To what extent did the constitution ensure the Kaisers power was preserved? To a large extent the Kaiser had all power over Germany and with the desire for changes in the way Germany was run, it resulted in the improvements such as the creation of a constitution which was without a doubt crucial to the consolidation of the Kaisers position. The constitution consisted of 25 federal states, within this there were 4 kingdoms, 12 Duchies, 6 Grand Duchies and 3 free cities. At first the Kaiser had pretty much entire control over all of these states, however each one did have a government which could decide on a healthcare system, education and justice policies. The states were at this point happy with this situation, so on the whole they were content to remain part of Germany. The Kaiser had autocratic control over diplomatic policy and this meant he could even dismiss his own chancellor. He could control the entire political system of Germany as he could select people who agreed with his policies. He also made a rule that in order to rule the Kaiser must be a Prussian, ensuring his control over the German people. His rule also meant he could change the constitution so that these rules had to stay in place. The control of these factors played a big role in keeping his position a stable one. The chancellor was the chief minister of the Reich, the only person who controlled him was the Kaiser with his ability to dismiss state secretaries and anyone else who he didn’t like. He...

...that can like the two together is electronic medical records (EMR), or personal health records (PHR). Despite the contrary, personal health records provide benefits and challenges to consumer and providers, but never the less provide a channel for both entities. One added benefit of communication through PHR, is the improvement of patient health. Through enhanced lines of communication, patients and doctors can better discuss health related issues in a constructive and productive way. For example, Kaiser’s HealthConnect, individuals can view their own personal health records and immediately respond to any concerns to their physicians electronically (Kaiser Permanente, 2012). This enables the two parties to express and relay messages in a private forum where medical issues, though limited, can be entertained. According to Kaiser (2012), “Because KP HealthConnect includes more comprehensive patient information, it helps...

...One real world problems I have encountered would be the day my husband and I got fired from our jobs in the same week. This incident happened about two years ago when the economy was starting to go down and the recession was just a reflection on what was to come. I had just started working as a call center agent for Kaiser Permanente working the graveyard shift; this had been the first job I had taken with those hours. In order to work permanently for Kaiser Permanente there is a probation period of four months, during these four months an employee cannot call in sick without a doctor’s note, cannot be late to a shift more than twice, and cannot call in to be absent. One day I had a really bad migraine and ear ache and decided to call in sick. The next day when I went back to work I had forgotten to get a doctor’s note to take to work and my supervisor had advice me to get one the following day or my job could be in jeopardy. The week went by and I had forgotten about the note, when my probation evaluation was up that incident came up and the department supervisor decided I had to be terminated. About three days earlier my husband was also terminated from his job due to our childcare issues. Now that it happened and time has passed to reflect on what went wrong I believe a way to solve this problem in a persuasive thinking manner would have been for myself to go to work that day and speak with my supervisor and explain to him that I knew the rules of calling in sick during the...

...HEALTH MAINTANENCE ORGANIZATION IVAN D. HALOL HCS/212 - HEALTH CARE VOCABULARY APRIL 15, 2013 INSTRUCTOR DEBORAH DOHERTY In 1990 Kaiser Permanente became the largest Health Maintenance Organization in the country. This was the result of a great man. His name was Dr. Sydney R. Garfield MD. Dr. Garfield is one of the pioneers in voluntary prepaid healthcare plans which was a direct precedent to the federal government enacting the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973. Dr. Sydney Garfield opened up a fee for service hospital in 1933. However, insurance companies were slow to compensate his practice and delinquent or non-payment from patients had negative impacts on his practice. This led Dr. Garfield to initiate an agreement with insurance companies to charge a prepaid fee of five cents a day to workers. Under a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan patients and/or employers paid a fixed monthly payment. This provided patients with healthcare that included preventive medicine checkups, immunizations, office visits, and hospitalization. Professionally and personally, Kaiser Permanente has been my employer and healthcare provider for the past several years. The HMO system is cost effective to our patients compared to a pay as you go healthcare plan. Dr. Sidney Garfield opened up his first hospital in 1933 called Contractor’s General Hospital. Its purpose was to provide healthcare for over 5,000 workers that were constructing the Metropolitan Water District of Southern...

...Administrative Ethics Paper Patient confidentiality has become a trending topic in the Health Care industry and in the news. Many organizations have placed patient confidentiality at the top of their important “to do” lists. The United States government is really emphasizing the importance of patient privacy and they are also cracking down on facilities that are not abiding by HIPPA’s regulations. Stiff fines and penalties are being administered to organizations that are found not to be in compliance with HIPPA regulations. I’ve recently read an article about a breach in patient privacy at Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser Permanente is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plans, serving approximately 9.1 million members, with headquarters in Oakland, Calif("Fast Facts About Kaiser Permanente", 2014). Issue and its impact on the population it affects most The issue that has occurred at Kaiser Permanente is that their server has been infected with a malicious malware. The breach of the organization has been going on for quite some time. The organization thinks that the server has been infected ever since October of 2011; the breach was not discovered until February of 2014. This is quite some time for a breach in security to go undetected. The breach of the “secure” server has affected over 5,000 patients. All of the patients protected health information was on the server. This breach mostly affects the 5,100 patients that had private medical information and personal information...

As such it provides an important learning experience for students who are already managers or who aspire to that level of responsibility. The primary learning opportunities address building a vision at the unit level, restructuring for success, overcoming resistance to change internally and across other units of a larger corporation, building support with powerful sponsors, and the importance of communication and persistence where authority is limited. The case has a difficulty level appropriate for undergraduate seniors and graduate students, and is designed for courses addressing organizational change, leading change, and leading teams. It can be covered in a one hour class. Preparation for the case is expected to require 3-4 hours. CASE SYNOPSIS The case begins with the recognition by a senior vice-president that the inadequacies of a seemingly insignificant compliance unit could jeopardize the overall growth strategy of BOKF, a large regional bank holding company. Paula Bryant-Ellis agrees to take on the transformation of the CRA department into a modern Community Development Banking Group (CDBG) that ...

The paper will also discussed is the influence of implementing and evaluating the resources and procedures vital for decision-making, and evaluates the ethical implications of a solution from the perspective of stakeholders. The mission of Kaiser Permanente is to provide high quality, affordable healthcare services and to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve (Crane, 2002). ...Week 2-Effective Communication Paper Kaiser Permanente based in Oakland California is the largest not-for-profit health plan in the United States. They do primary, secondary and hospital care emphasizing prevention to its members. They use electronic medical records and use care pathways that provide its 8.7 million members cost effective and high quality care ("What Health Systems Can Learn from Kaiser Permanente: An Interview with Hal Wolf", 2009). Kaiser covers all of the health care needs to its members in one place which includes hospitals, laboratories and pharmacies. In this essay we will discuss the organizational model used, the communication style, both positive and negative communications and how technology could affect the organization. Kaiser Permanente is made up of 3 organizations which are Kaiser Foundations Health Plan (KFHP), Kaiser Foundation Hospitals (KFH) and the Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) ("Our Business Structure", n.d.). KFHP is a nonprofit prepaid plan that contracts with individuals and groups to receive health care. KFH is a nonprofit public corporation that owns and operates its own facilities in California, Oregon and Hawaii to provide services such as hospital stays, sponsors charitable, educational and research endeavors ("Our Business Structure", n.d.). ...Business Research Process Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente (KP), a prominent and not-for-profit healthcare establishment, has received an opportunity to trial and promote a new medical equipment in which KP members can ultimately receive improved patient care services. Should the equipment trial conclude successfully, the equipment can be purchased at a reduced price. With KP facilities equipped with extensive radiology and oncology equipment, specific KP medical centers will receive a state of the art MRI machine on behalf of General Electric (GE). The new MRI machine will provide more clear and accurate images for x-rays, CAT scans, ultrasounds, and nuclear medicine tests. In addition, the machine would eliminate patients having to sit or lie in uncomfortable positions to retrieve bodily images which will increase patient satisfaction. Should KP choose to trial the equipment and attain positive results, remaining KP facilities and other healthcare competitors will pursue the purchase of the new MRI machine. However, prior to committing to a new billion dollar equipment and promotion commitment, KP must engage in research to determine if the new equipment will benefit their members along with which facility would pilot the new machine. “Good research generates dependable data that are derived by professionally conducted practices and that can be used reliably for decision making” (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). Various teams will combine efforts to extract data from...

...Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concepts MGT-307 September 12, 2011 Farid Dalili Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concepts I will be discussing in this paper how the organizational culture, organizational behavior, diversity and communication is analyzed at Kaiser Permanente. I will define and explain how Kaiser Permanente uses the terminology and concepts in our hospital. Organizational Culture Organizational culture is the shared beliefs and values that make a difference in the behavior of organizational members. Culture plays an important role in stability and safety in an organization. Organization culture defines an organization's leadership and in order to understand its leadership, it is a must to first understand its culture. “Although it is relatively easy to conclude that what works well in one culture may not work as well in another, it is far harder to specify exactly how cultural differences affect things like motivation, job satisfaction, and ethical behavior.” (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008). The organizational culture at Kaiser Permanente has started a program called “Live Well Be Well” for their employees. This program has really made a big difference at our facility. The employees have better understanding of their health, motivated to come to work everyday and work ethics have improved as well. . Employees rely on culture for the ability to respond to any circumstances, culture becomes hard core in many organizations...

Type the abstract of the document here. The abstract is typically a short summary of the contents of the document.] | Business is the back bone of any economy. It forms an economies foundation and without business your economy would be almost no existent and nothing more than a barter system really. Life would look much like a feudal system of our ancestors. In the US we have a capitalistic economy and business is the main component of it. Business is in every corner of every sector of what we do when we go to work. Most everything you can possible think of that relates to the economy is business. Retail, services, agriculture, manufacturing, health care, even the current campaign for president all involves business. Even when civilizations were based on an agricultural type of economy, business transactions occurred. For example, in an agricultural society based solely on farming, there would be different types of farming taking place. If one farmer grew coconuts, and his neighbor had cattle, they would probably trade coconuts and milk with each other. This is just a practical business transaction to make. If they did not barter in this way, one would be forced to go without milk and the other would be forced to go without coconuts. This is just an illustration to point out that...

...address two key issues pertaining to EMC. These issues are fast tracking the ED at EMC and the need for specialty physicians to care for patients. The average occupancy rate of the hospital is 50 percent. The emergency room was created for 16,000 visits but sees over 45,000 visits. EMC serves the medical needs of the local community, regardless of social, ethnic, or religious background. EMC’s customer base is a growing, aging, and culturally diverse population. Over half of the ED visits are by uninsured or underinsured patients. EMC was the last independent hospital in the area. Managed care was encroaching on the area, including Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser was set to make significant inroads to the EMC service area in the next 18 months. EMC expected the strong possibility to contract with or be acquired by Kaiser. An additional threat by Kaiser Permanente existed because they were planning to build a facility close to Emanuel Medical Center. With the implementation of EMTALA, hospitals were required to give access to emergency medical care for all regardless of the ability to pay. HMO’s and government programs lowered reimbursement rates to the hospital. The ED continued to remain a financial burden as well as an unsatisfactory experience for patients. The service standards are declining, morale is low, and staffing is an issue. Patients seek primary care at the ED because of little or no access to a physician and this is the most expensive form of care. Over half of EMC’s...

...Kaiser Permanente as a System Introduction Kaiser Permanente (KP) was founded in California in 1945. It is one of the largest non-profit healthcare organizations in the United States, made up of three entities: the Kaiser Foundation Hospital, the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and the Permanente Medical Groups. It currently serves about 9.1 members within the following states: California, Colorado, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Georgia. With a few exceptions, it mostly operates under a managed care model, owning the physician network and the facilities its members use to receive medical services (Fast Facts, 2013). In this paper I will present the systems thinking model, its definition and its use as a diagnosis model. Then, I will evaluate Kaiser Permanente as a system and identify a problem or challenge. Finally, I will offer recommendations on how to overcome this problem. Systems Thinking Systems thinking is used to analyze how all departments within an organization function and can affect each other. When we analyze an organization as a system, we learn how it can work in an efficient manner and how to fix it when it’s not working properly. An organization functions effectively if all its parts or departments are well-integrated. In systems thinking we look at the organization as a whole and how all its parts work together (Ackoff, 1999). The open systems model presents the organization as a system...
