Kalee McGuffee had the experience of a lifetime at the age of 17. How many people can actually tell you adventures that took place in Australia?
“It was a trip I will never forget!” stated the overly excited Kalee.
Kalee went on to further explain how the opportunity had fallen into her lap, “My dad is a marine biologist. So they decided to take an intern for the summer, and when they asked I couldn’t help, but say yes!”
When asked about her adventures she came up with many fascinating stories that had taken place over the three month period. “The most exciting part of the entire trip was the deep sea fishing. We had been going out for almost four days straight before we finally caught what we were after.”

Kalee also experienced the most painful pain in her life while in Australia snorkeling. As she was treading the water examining a clownfish swimming to and fro in its sea anemone her foot grazed some strange looking coral. To her surprise it turned out to be fire coral. Fire corals are colonial marine organisms that exhibit physical characteristics similar to that of coral. Fire corals are not really coral they are more closely related to Hydra and other hydrozoans. “It was the worst pain I had ever felt in my entire life. It felt like my entire leg up to my knee was burning from the inside out.”
Kalee quickly swam back to the boat with the other marine Biologist where they immediately doctored her cut, and told her to stay put for the rest of the day. “When I got on the boat the pain had gotten worse until they took out this smelly bottle of vinegar and dumped it on my foot. I was real upset that I couldn’t get back in the water, but the pain was so bad I just wanted to sleep.”
“I had to keep my leg straight and still for several hours so the poison would not spread to other parts of my
