Kant is a strong representative of the theory named deontology; this concept emphasizes greatly on the idea of duty, the nature of obligation, and even what someone ought to do. Kant is quick to state how he feels about other theories when they are compared to this one. Unlike other theories this is not focused or fueled by good consequences but, by what is the right thing to do in a situation. Kant states that there is only one good thing here and it is known as good will. The good will is based on reason instead of sentiment like usual theories consist of. As stated before Kant describes the categorical imperatives as a perfect duty. Perfect duties are known as commands or actions that had a certain obligation. “Thus the imperative declares what action possible by me would be good, and presents the practical rule in relation to a will which does not forthwith perform an action simply because it is good” (Kant 409) This is where the human mind and brain are different entities. As the mind focuses on what is right and how the duty must get accomplished compared to the brain analyzes the theory in the aspects of emotion and outcomes. As he discusses three ways to how one can achieve true moral worth. This to me seems very vague and demoralizing as it stating someone’s worth is measure by their duty. Although, Deontology seems to focus on the duty itself. Kant proposes one should promote happiness by their duty, which is one of the ways to earn true moral worth. The second proposition focuses on the idea how the action is taking place during the duty. “The third proposition, which is a consequence of the two preceding, I would express thus—Duty is the necessity of acting from respect for the law.” (Kant 403) all of these propositions seem to be repeating basically the same idea. I believe someone true moral worth cannot be measures as it is truly someone’s opinion to criticize how an obligation is completed. Deontology has a great idea and goal but it definitely does not appeal to those who have different opinions on how a duty is classified as an imperfect or perfect duty.
