...Turbine to Full Kaplan Operation at Michigamme Falls By Gerard J. Russell, P.E., American Hydro Corp., York, Pennsylvania, USA, Craig Peterson, P.E., American Hydro Corp., York, Pennsylvania, USA, and Douglas T. Eberlein, P.E., We Energies, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA ABSTRACT FERC license renewal stipulations for We Energies’ Michigamme Falls plant included new flow constraints that were outside the existing fixed-blade propeller turbines’ efficiency range. One of the turbines was converted to fully adjustable Kaplan operation to regain the lost generation. Introduction Renewal of the project’s FERC license in October of 2001 required that the minimum flow could be no less than 50% of the maximum flow during a given calendar day. The existing generating units were typical fixed-blade propeller turbines with a very narrow range of efficient operation, so they could not effectively meet this new requirement. We Energies evaluated several options for addressing the new operating regime including spilling the required low flow when necessary, installation of a minimum flow turbine-generator unit, and conversion of one of the propeller units to full adjustable blade Kaplan operation. The Kaplan conversion was chosen as the most effective option to improve the operating efficiency and flexibility of the plant while achieving the required low flow operating capability. This paper describes the Owner’s planning process that resulted in the decision to convert the unit from fixed to adjustable...

...Assignment Instructions Unit: 4 Instructions: This week's Assignment consists of reading a scenario about Sandwich Blitz, Inc., and responding to four questions. Dalman and Lei have discussed two possible avenues to grow and expand Sandwich Blitz, Inc. One possible strategy would be to franchise locations. Another strategy would be to secure venture capital to finance an internal expansion by opening more company-owned shops. Dalman feels that he just doesn’t have time to investigate these options because he is spending an increasing amount of his time assisting the location managers. Lei noted that two of the location managers had exhibited a lot of skill in the management of their locations and perhaps a new position could be added to coordinate with the location managers. This would free Dalman to work on these larger issues. After reading the scenario above and your assigned readings in the textbook, paying particular attention to the section on authority, respond to the following questions: (Please number your responses 1 – 4 according to the four questions) 1. How would creating a new position between the CEO and the location managers help the business to grow? 2. Is promoting an existing manager the best option to fill this position? If not, what is an alternative source to fill the position? 3. Who within the company should make these decisions? 4. List the levels of authority (management) that Sandwich Blitz, Inc. would have if the new position is created. To help...

...is important to have an understanding of the desired the level of performance. With regard to individual performance and performance evaluation metrics, my current work unit is lacking and struggles to report accurate data for how an employee performance evaluation relates to units of service as well as error percentage. In the current state, there is not a single system solution to collect data therefore causing a painstakingly manual process to collect any form of data metrics. This organizational change proposal will identify the need to develop a comprehensive strategy of employee evaluation using the balanced scorecard approach. This performance management strategy will define the necessary performance tools for a successful implementation while ensuring the performance evaluations defined by the strategic goals governed by the institution. Need for Balanced Scorecard Identified According to the current job description, the sole responsibility of work unit staff is for the review of submitted laboratory samples, requisitions, and pathology reports for accurate and timely accessioning of patient and testing information into the Pathology computer system(s). The definition of accessioning is entering a single patient and all represented laboratory material into the computer systems. This work unit as well as the work completed is complex, therefore the ability to identify a performance management evaluation strategy will require diverse thinking and data gathering...
