...Shocking the art world with her black silhouette depictions of blacks and whites engaged in situations ranging from lynchings to rape and even bestiality during the pre-Civil War South, Kara Walker has achieved both notoriety and acclaim in the art world while still in her twenties. “It is hard to think of another artist in the last three or four years who has emerged as rapidly,” commented Alexis Worth on Walker in a 1996 issue of Art in New England. In a way, Walker’s goal with her art is to make the viewer gasp and laugh at the same time. “I want to provoke the audience in the most enjoyable way possible,” Walker told Artnews “I think of my art as a kind of melodrama, producing a certain giddiness that entertains but also empowers.” A blend of social commentary and humor is clearly in evidence in works such as Before the Battle: Chickin’ Dumplin’, which shows a Confederate solider kneeling to kiss a topless black woman on the breast as she drops a chicken leg in surprise. Walker employs a nineteenth-century style of art combined with an uncensored modern perspective to highlight the full range of physical and sexual exploitation during the ante-bellum era. Her art installations evolve from drawings or smaller watercolor sketches she renders that help her determine her themes, and some of her shows have included these preliminary studies in juxtaposition with the final artworks. Sometimes she cuts her images right into the wall of the gallery. Many of them life-size in scale...

...situations designed to result in affection and ultimately love towards Valerii. The experiment results in a successful pregnancy after Valerii has sex with Agathon,[9] though as an unintended side effect, she falls in love with him as well.[10] Agathon soon discovers the truth about her Cylon nature after spotting another Number Eight copy while trying to infiltrate the Delphi military base. Believing that he is being led into a trap, he runs from the base and Valerii.[11] She eventually catches up to him and reveals she is pregnant. Despite shooting her in the shoulder, Agathon realizes he can't bring himself to kill her and instead, at her urging, takes her with him to the Delphi museum. It is there he is reunited with fellow Galactica pilot Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, who is on a special mission from President Laura Roslin to recover the Arrow of Apollo.[12] After nearly being killed by Thrace, Valerii steals the Cylon Raider and flies off.[13] Agathon and Thrace make their way first to Thrace's old apartment to retrieve a new mode of transportation (an old army truck she owned),[14] and then into the woods in search of another military base. While stopping to get their bearings, they run into a group of Pyramid players-turned resistance fighters.[15] After Thrace is wounded and captured by the...

...During Leroy’s high school years he was an athlete who began drinking and smoking at a young age. He received a football scholarship to college but lost eligibility because of his grades and dropped out. He had two marriages, both ending in divorce due to his drunken temper. He had 6 children, none of which he had relationships with. He worked in construction until his alcohol addiction, weight gain, and poor health caught up to him and he was discharged. After a drunken fall, Leroy fractured his skull, ending up in a low quality nursing facility. He is no longer aloud to drink or smoke and spends his time angry and yelling at the staff (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2009). Based on my eco map of Leroy Karas, I believe that the single strongest...

...extranjero.

...Black/White: Kara Walker’s ‘Work in Progress’ I really wanted to know more about this particular piece of art. Yet I have found that I have learned so much more about Kara Walker and her various works. Kara Walker is a contemporary artist from California. She explores race, sexuality, gender, violence and identity in her work. In her silhouettes, Walker’s black characters are cut out of black paper and the white characters live in a white space of reflection. Walker uses black cuts outs of figures to emphasize a more dramatic effect as a silhouette. The majority of her works were inspired by images found in her favorite history books. She uses these images as an example of how whites viewed black slaves in the antebellum south (Shaw). Research into Kara Walker’s work leads me to believe the intent may be deeper than that. Walker’s work often caused an issue with other members of the art community. She was accused of not having a sensitive opinion on the topic of slavery. I am sure this can be due to the fact that she expresses herself through rough imagery which could easily be interpreted as disrespectful or offensive (Michele'Kieffer). Kara Walker addressed the issue in an interview by stating “The work is not about slavery so much as it conjures horrors of reconstruction and 20th-century Jim Crow-ism and the Tea Party.” Since her first exhibit Walker has become an international success, been labeled a genius and has won the MacArthur Fellowship. Kara Walker’s work resonates...

An Installation Artist by the name of Kara Walker has tried to document these changes in her artwork, which will be seen later on throughout the piece. Something unlike the images that you have seen to describe African-American culture through the years, her images contain a sense of brutally honest ethnically charged art that is famous worldwide. ...Prayer and Healing in Healthcare October 15, 2012 Prayer versus modern medicine is a very controversial subject in today’s modern world. There are very strong debates and cases offering strong evidence on both sides of which one may be better or more effective than another. It all comes down to personal opinion stemming from the religious background of the patient, parents, or caregiver. One side argues that prayer can be used in lieu of modern medicine including medications, surgery and different therapies and that it will cure the sick and rid them of illness. The other side disagrees with opposing views that prayer cannot replace medicine and cure the sick. Many studies have been done on prayer and healing but it is hard to prove or disprove whether prayer actually heals or if it simply gives the patient hope and comfort in their journey with illness. Being a controversial subject many scientists have disagreed on prayer healing because there is not much evidence to prove it as a fact. In parts of Christianity there are people that strongly believe in the healings through prayer and what great powers there are and can be experienced when you devote your life to Christ. There are certain shows that we all have seen on television where a person goes on stage and is healed by the power of God through a practice or a procedure called “being slain in the spirit” ("Faith healing," 2007). Scientists have a hard time taking this information as credible because there...

...Kara perched on the plastic chairs in the dining area of The Delores Project, hand tapping on the table to the beat of her voice as she talked about the roller coaster that has been the last few years of her life. “The only thing I’m sad about is that I’ll still sound like a boy when you go back to listen to this interview,” she laughed. But for all her misgivings, there is something utterly feminine about the way she holds herself. This is the confidence that comes with accepting yourself and having those around yourself accept you as well. Kara describes herself as an outgoing girl who likes to joke around and think positive. At 38, she is two years out of the closet as a trans woman, leaving behind both the good and the bad of her previous life. A little over a year ago, she left...

...“I don't know how much I believe in redemptive stories, even though people want them and strive for them.” Kara Walker was born on November 22, 1969 in Stockton, California. She was the first African American to rise to fame because of her large paper silhouettes to show social issues surrounding gender, race, and black history. In 1944 her work appeared in a new talent show at the drawing center in New York. In 1997 she received a John D. and a Catherine T. MacArthur foundation “genius grant.” Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. When she was 3 years old she knew she wanted to be an artist. Her style of art is avant-garde, trying to tell a story or a statement than beauty and perfection. In 1999 she stated...

...1. Describe the situation faced by Kara. Kara is in a bit of a dilemma; she is relatively new to the business and has seen some unethical behavior from her colleague Sally. Sally is aggressive and will say anything to make a sale, it is essentially lying to the customers which has not settled well with Kara. Sally is the model “Traditional Salesperson” whereas Kara is a “Golden Rule Salesperson” that puts the customer’s interests first. Kara has a performance appraisal coming up to review her performance thus far, she is worried that if she tells the bosses about Sally, it could backfire on her as they may tell her to get more aggressive like Sally, and sell unethically. 2. What would you do if you were Kara? What I would do depends on what side of the fence management is on. If the management likes the fact that Sally is selling lots of furniture using unethical practices, this just means that the company is not a good fit for me (Kara) as it doesn’t settle well with my principles. I would quit if this was the case. Now on the other hand, if management were shocked by this behavior and did not appreciate this type of selling then, I would volunteer to coach Sally on using the golden rule style of selling and show her simple ethical practices to use, this would make me a better salesperson, the company would regard me as a leader and finally it would strengthen the bond with Sally. 3. What are the ethical considerations, if any, in this case? There are a few angles to...

...terrific night's plans; my sister and her boyfriend just happened to be aboard that Ford Focus that evening. “Ring, Ring, Ring.” I picked up to hear the voice of my ex- boyfriend, whom I had not spoken to in quite some time, and I instantly heard the panic in his voice. His cracky voice told me that my sister and Brandon had been in a severe car accident, and Brandon was okay, but Kara was being taken to McDonough District Hospital in Macomb by ambulance. “No, not my best-friend, or my big sister!” This news struck me with emptiness. I couldn't bare the thought of my sister being hurt, or not there at all anymore. Jack tried to keep me calm, and told me to not drive, and to stay put unless I found somebody to take me to her. I knew I had to get to that hospital , so I had my friends drive me. I tried getting hold of my parents, but I failed because they were in Florida, and were out for the night. It was a 30- minute drive, that felt like days. I couldn't keep from getting gruesome pictures in my head, and I couldn't stop thinking the worst had happened. As we were driving to meet Kara at the small town hospital, cop cars were speeding by, with their flashing lights. One of them just happened to be the father of my sister's boyfriend, and he was exceeding the speed limit. We reached the hospital after 30 minutes of driving. When I arrived at the hospital I saw Brandon standing in a swarm of eager cops in front of the entrance to the hospital accompanied by three police...

Although he had a devoted wife who loves and cares for him, Ram cannot help but be drawn towards the carefree and brass Kara.
