...Obama announced, “The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake” (M. Obama, 2010). The following paper will answer the question of why children become obese and offers possible solutions to prevent obesity. Without proper moderation and knowledge of nutritional values the current generation and future generations will continue to have their lives at risk. Exercise is also a key factor in attaining the correct body weight for the specific age and height of the child. It is important to prevent childhood obesity because it can cause many health problems for our children now and as they get older. Changing the following will decrease or maintain a healthy body weight: increase in activity, better nutrition, exercise and habits. Past generations were limited in technology, leading to youth spending more time physically playing outside. Today with so many technological options children no longer need to go outside to have fun. If children spent at least an hour doing a physical activity outside they will be one step closer to starting a healthier lifestyle. After school and on the weekends, children are inside playing video games and watching television. Technology has taken the place of the after school extracurricular activities. ...Juvenile Crime Jacqueline Allen CJS200 June 9, 2013 Charles Musselwhite Abstract Juvenile crime is a crime committed by minors (juveniles) younger than the statutory adult age. In most of the legal systems there are specific procedures followed when dealing with minor offenders, such as juvenile detention centers, boot camps, etc. This paper will attempt to create a better understanding of the offenses, the causes, and the procedures to deal with the criminal behavior of juveniles. In addition this paper will project ideas to reduce the criminal behavior of these minor’s through intervention and preventative measures. Juvenile Crime Each state has its own trenchant juvenile justice system with its own practices and laws. There are however broad underlying opinion that separates the juvenile justice system from the criminal justice system. The fundamental rationalization of the juvenile court system is that youth are developmentally different from adults and that they are susceptible of being lead or directed. Because of this pliant behavior the justice system feels that rehabilitation and treatment, with the addition of community protection are very feasible goals. In the adult court the defendant is provided greater Constitutional rights than are available in the juvenile court. An example of this is the criminal defendant has a right to a trial by a judge or a jury of their peers. A minor does not have that right; their fate is decided by a juvenile court...

...Divorce has become the norm in American society, but what has not become the norm are the effects that it has on children. Divorce impacts all individuals connected to the relationship but children are effected the most. Because of their innocence and immaturity they are not able to cope with the stressful events and aftermath of divorce like adults are able to. No one knows exactly how a child will react to divorce but more than not their behavior can be characterized as explosive and sporadic. The purpose of this research paper is to provide credible information on the effects that divorce has on children and the impact that it makes on their overall outlook on life before and after the divorce occurred. It will also highlight the stress that comes along with the relationship between parent and child as well as some insight on common practices used to help the children cope with the overall impact of divorce. Last but not least I will be adding some insight from my own personal experience about the effects of divorce. The demise or end of marriage has various and lasting effects on everyone connected to the couple going through that situation. Along with that comes a huge amount of stress, ill willed feelings, confusion, emptiness, and a plethora of other things that I would need three more pages to list. Children are the most vulnerable to the effects of these things. With their simple mind set and understanding of things, the concept of daddy and mommy not living...

...Unit 5 Individual Project ENGL107-1201B-27 American Intercontinental University Online 03/08/2012 Amanda Reynolds Abstract This paper will argue the need to reduce juvenile delinquency. It will consider ways to help reduce juvenile delinquency and why it is so important. This paper will give the reader insight about what needs to happen in order to help juveniles be successful and stay out of the juvenile justice system. There will be key agreements that will require the reader’s attention. Effective Ways to Reduce Juvenile Delinquency A 16-year-old teenager was arrested after a veteran police officer was gunned down in St. Petersburg, Florida. (Fox News, 2011). According to an article by the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) called “Punishing Teen Criminal Like Criminals,” “juveniles were accounting for more than 500,000 serious violent crimes by 1984.” It is expected that while the adults committing homicides is to decline almost by twenty percent the juveniles committing homicides will increase by almost one-fourth. How can the American society mitigate the occurrences of juvenile delinquency? Many approaches have been taken to institutionalize juvenile delinquents and rehabilitate them. As the Mayor of St. Petersburg, Bill Foster said “we as a community need to standup and do a better job.” These occurrences will not stop unless there is a plan and execution established to make it happen. That is why juvenile delinquency must be tackled through...

...Gender Role Stereotypes and Children’s Television For this paper, I had to watch a wide variety of different shows. I had to watch a few cartoons, sitcoms and PBS shows. What I found in this study I found very interesting. I found that the most traditional roles in men and women were found in the PBS shows. I am sure this is because when children watch these, they are usually at the age where they are establishing the roles of girls and boys. I found that in the sit-coms, especially friends, my research correlates with what the Signorelli article says. According to the article, “Women make up at least half of the characters in soap operas.” This is true in Friends; there are three boys and three girls. Also true in The Office, they have just as many women as they do men. In the article I also found that “women characters have the stereotypical role of emotional, romantic, and affectionate emotions.” This is true in the way that Monica has a stereotypical occupation of a chef. That is very domestic. She also does all of the cleaning, and nurtures all of her friends. Another way is that Rachel is a waitress, which is also very domestic. They are both pretty emotional. The article also states, “On average women tend to be about 4 years younger then men.” I am not sure of the exact ages of the women or men in Friends, but they women do look a little bit younger. It makes sense; Ross is Monica’s older brother. The research in the Signorelli article states how women in television...

...Obesity and the Professional Nurse’s Role Paper Part I Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Currently, there are more than one third of children and adolescents who are determined as being overweight or obese (Ogden et al, 2014). In the past 30 years, the numbers of children who are affected by obesity have more than doubled (CDC, 2014). Clinically defined, children who are determined to be overweight are those who have excess body weight for their height and it is attributed to fat, muscle, bone, water, or a combination of (Stats, 2014). Children who are determined to be obese are those who have an excess amount of body fat and it is not attributed to physical characteristics (Krebs et al, 2007). For nurses who work with this population of patients, special care will need to be taken to address the host of physical and emotional issues that will be a part of this population’s treatment and care. Nursing staff must be prepared to appropriately diagnose obesity related health problems and provide effective intervention and treatment recommendations. Nurses who develop insightful treatment planning will be cognizant of the variety of health complications that may affect the patient in their care and can plan accordingly (Felix et al, 2013). As such, nurses also need to be more knowledgeable about how genetic susceptibility may also be a contributing factor to a child’s obesity (Seal, 2011). This will enable the treatment planning to incorporate genetic testing...

...adherence to the highest possible standards of public service and integrity,” is a quote that can be found on the Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council (CBSC) website, which presents a opposite At first the interview appeared to be a respectful interview with a respectful interview guest, Canadian Interpretive Dancer, Margie Gillis; however, this interview was nothing but this as the conduct of broadcaster Krista Erikson took a turn for the worst. Consequently, resulting in the CBSC receiving a record number of complaints- in fact they received more complaints than Sun TV sees viewers. While it is true that we live in a free democratic society where we can express our opinions even if they may not be the same at others, once that pen hits paper or the camera hits record, it is the duty of journalists and reporters to provide information in a manner which is truthful and unbiased. Evidently, this is something that Erikson lacked as she attacked and ambushed interpretive dancer, Gillis. Within the CBSC’s violations there is article eight (decency and conduct), which states “Broadcast journalists will treat people who are subjects and sources with decency. They will use special sensitivity when dealing with children. They will strive to conduct themselves in a courteous and considerate manner, keeping broadcast equipment as unobtrusive as possible. They will strive to prevent their presence from distorting the character or importance of events.” Evidently, it is expected that Erikson...

...African Lemons Tuwain Kolleh Chamberlain College of Nursing Introduction to Business & Technology Professor Christine Epps Introduction There’s a lot that goes into starting a business, especially when you are starting one from scratch. Often time’s people look at successful entrepreneurs and say that they got lucky, not knowing that it took hard work and proper business strategies to get to where that entrepreneur is. The purpose of this paper is to develop a basic premise for a new company, address-branding strategies, importance of a company mission statement, ways that company’s can positively affect their communities, proper way to price products and how to enter your company into a global market. Branding After contemplating on several names for my company, I finally decided to name my lemonade stand African Lemons. Living in one of the top African populated communities in the U.S gives me an edge over other competitors by branding my lemonade stand African Lemons. Us Africans are known for having each other backs no matter what African country you are from. It’s a cultural thing. We rather buy from our native people then people of other cultures. I will also be able to draw other customers with this name due to the fact that African products are usually natural, pure and without artificial preservatives. Many Americans and foreigners love natural products especially for their young ones. Naming is important to the creation of a product/ company...

...fat with body mass Index (BMI) of 30 is being obese. Causes of obesity: Overeating, lack of exercise, genetics Teens suffer from obesity usually during their high school years which later on leads to serious health issues as they turn adults. School does provide prevention programs on smoking, alcohol, abstinence; however eating healthy is less given importance. Moreover, lunches offered at school play a great role in teen obesity with fattening, starchy foods and vending machine facility (Fibkins, 2006). Question of Inquiry What has caused teen obesity nowadays? We can see around the world the increase in number of teen obesity. As we know teens have always known to be the most active age group is not true any more. My research is based on what are the reasons behind this and the factors that have led to this problem lately and how can it be prevented. It is understandable obesity at old age because there is less physical activity and people do not care about their physical appearance that much but the question arises why there is an increase in teen obesity when we know teens are more health conscious, aware of looks and living up to the latest fashion possible. Sources of information used to gather Evidence Whatever I have researched is from secondary data. I have come across a great deal of information from the internet which I would share in my...

...Bullying is a Crime If the saying, “if sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me” was ever true, it sure isn't true today. Bullying in and out of schools is getting out of control. People are starting to worry if the suicide rate is increasing due to bullying. Children are not the only ones being bullied today; adults are also victims in the bullying epidemic. Statistics have shown that one third of teens are bullied at school and 4 percent also report that they were also victims of cyber bullying (Tangen and Campbell). Parents and teachers should take a stand against bullying to become a part in preventing it. Parents and teachers need to be a part of the solution, not the problem. Victims of bullying are caused much damage and some are scarred for life. Bullying should not be tolerated because it can cause emotional, physical, or social damage to a victim, which can lead to dangerous consequences. What we don’t realize is that there are limited laws and/or policies in place that stop bullying from happening. Legislation needs to be updated or changed to accommodate to new bullying tactics such as cyber bullying and the consequences need to be more severe to stop bullying from happening ever again. Bullying is widespread and perhaps the most underreported safety problem on American school campuses. Contrary to popular belief, bullying occurs more often during school hours than on the way to and from school. But what is bullying? To me bullying...

...Memory Without it, you’d be constantly living in one moment to the next. You wouldn’t know who you are, where you came from or where you are going. But what is it? And how does it work? To answer these questions, early memory researchers decided to break memory down into simple structures. The mysterious power of our mind to store images, words and sounds, was reduced into several components. All of these components were then thought to interact through simple processes. Simplifying memory in this way was a necessary step in developing our understanding of how memory functions. From this structured view of memory, two important models of memory were developed: the Multi-store Model and the Working-Memory Model. Section 1: Multi-store model of memory Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) Do you think you have a good memory? What is your earliest memory? The multi-store model is a structural model which states that memory is made up of 3 distinct, separate stores: sensory memory, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Each of the stores can be analysed based on three factors: 1) Capacity: how much information can be stored 2) Duration: the amount of time the information can be stored 3) Encoding: how the information is represented by the memory system Sensory memory The first store in the multi-store model is the sensory memory store. This store provides an account of the environment as experienced by our senses. A copy of the stimulus is kept here until we determine...
