Karlsen provides insight into the oppressed society during the 1600s. Where three innocent women from Massachusetts, Anne Hutchinson, Mary Dyer and Jane Hawkins, were informal accused of witchcraft. Although none of the women were truly tried as witches, the punishment for Hutchinson and Hawkins was banishment from the colony while Dyer was later brutally executed. Their story documented the abuse of power of early colony leaders and how they used witchcraft as a means of control. For instance, Hutchinson was one of the central figures in the Antinomian controversy. Her adversaries believed her views were antinomianism which she harshly denied. Her outspoken theological views coupled with her zealous religious leadership threatened the colony
