“We are free to choose our actions, but we are not free to choose the consequences of these actions,” Stephen Covey said. Karma can be defined as destiny, fate, or an effect of a cause. Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology is a collection of epitaphs of people who lived in the town of Spoon River. The collections represent a small town of many people who have had very different lives. Many characters would be related to each other through work or religion, moreover, while some characters would be related to scandals. Some of the origins of the scandals would come from the secrets that people would die with. Butch Weldy is a character who is deeply affected by karma. Butch is a man who would take advantage of women, consequently one of them …show more content…
One piece of evidence that supports that states, “A year passes and one day they found him dead, that made me rich,” (Lines 5-6). This is the setup for her karma as well as other quotes like, “He died one night right in my arms, you know,” (Line 11). And she continued with “There was almost a scandal,” (Line 13). This is the start of her downfall, as she gets suspected of killing her husbands after 3 of them die already and each of them adds enormous amounts of money. The biggest quote that would show the most karma would be, “I wed Count Navigato. He poisoned me I think,” (Lines 19-20). As it shows that she has finally found the person she loves most, but she gets poisoned and shows the worst case of karma from all the damage she inflicts. Dora Williams wouldn’t be the only character affected by her actions. In Spoon River, many characters would see setbacks from the harm they cause others. From Butch Weldy impacting other citizens like Dr. Meyers to Dora Williams impacting other people away from Spoon River. In the end, all of them have the same end goal. They all inflicted karma on themselves. Karma still plays a role in society

Life of Pi

...far-fetched story you can't quite swallow whole, but can't dismiss outright. Life of Pi is in this tradition—a story of uncertain veracity, made credible by the art of the yarn-spinner. Like its noteworthy ancestors, among which I take to be Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, the Ancient Mariner, Moby Dick and Pincher Martin, it's a tale of disaster at sea coupled with miraculous survival—a boys' adventure for grownups." —Margaret Atwood, The Sunday Times (London) "A fabulous romp through an imagination by turns ecstatic, cunning, despairing and resilient, this novel is an impressive achievement. . . . Martel displays the clever voice and tremendous storytelling skills of an emerging master." —Publisher's Weekly (starred review) "[Life of Pi] has a buoyant, exotic, insistence reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe's most Gothic fiction. . . . Oddities abound and the storytelling is first-rate. Yann Martel has written a novel full of grisly reality, outlandish plot, inventive setting and thought-provoking questions about the value and purpose of fiction." —The Edmonton journal "Martel's ceaselessly clever writing . . . [and] artful, occasionally hilarious, internal dialogue . . . make a fine argument for the divinity of good art." —The Gazette "Astounding and beautiful. . . . The book is a pleasure not only for the subtleties of its philosophy but also for its ingenious and surprising story. Martel is a confident, heartfelt artist, and his imagination is cared for in a writing style that...

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...
