...Sergio Meza March 10, 2015 Professor Bromberger What keeps someone motivated? Have you ever came to the conclusion and asked yourself what someone does in order to stay motivated? Making decisions in life can have both positive and negative outcomes; nevertheless, Francisco Jimenez a young Mexican boy with many disadvantages exemplified that everyone has the ability to be successful and can achieve greatness and your background should not limit you. Success is what made Francisco push himself forward and stay motivated along the way. To begin, as a young boy Francisco Jimenez was obligated to work in the fields, which is a difficult job with horrible pay. Therefore, the little money that he earned was given to his family in order for them to make ends meet. Over time he developed a strong work ethic from his father that not only applied in the field but also in the classroom. He states, I increased my hours at Santa Maria Window cleaners, working from six in the morning until midnight” (194). Even though the amount of hours he was working was dangerous he knew that he needed to work in order to help provide for his family since his older brother was not living with them anymore. Thought his whole life his obligation was work and then came school; however, Francisco never lost sight of succeeding and obtaining his goals. Secondly, the support of his teachers played a key role in him wanting to become a teacher and attending college. Miss bell, an English teacher during...

...How to keep your people motivated By- Sushil Ojha Being a Leader is the single greatest opportunity Tata Steel Processing And Distribution Limited can provide; a leader -- the golden opportunity! Almost all of us have either demonstrated or will have this opportunity at some point in our careers. There are many characteristics related to being a great manager. The top three include: practicing the golden rule; providing comprehensive and honest feedback; and making time to motivate your people. Many are taught at a young age that we should treat others the way that we want to be treated. Yet, this simple rule is often neglected in the rush of our daily lives. How many of us have been chewed out in public? Why? Because that's how our superiors were treated when they were the subordinates, and we all learn behaviors from our superiors, whether right or wrong. Do you chew out your people in public? I hope not, because even when it's well deserved, scolding always should be a private event. When an operator makes a mistake, focus on identifying and fixing the issue, not attacking or embarrassing the individual. Making corrections out of the public eye demonstrates a leader's respect for the individual, and a commitment to fixing the problem and moving forward without residual ill will. Applying the golden rule inversely can also produce some interesting insight. Do you treat your boss better than you treat your subordinates? What if we tried to treat all our people like we treat our...

...Castles are often pictured as enormous, magnificent stone buildings that are home to kings and queens. However, castles did not start out that way. The first castles were known as motte and bailey castles. They first appeared in England after the Norman Conquest in 1066, and they were popular in England by 1087, when William the Conqueror died. Motte and bailey castles created the basis for the hundreds of castles built in England and Wales. In the motte and bailey castles, the main building was on top of a man-made hill, which usually contained “22,000 tons of soil,” called the motte (Trueman). They were very difficult to make because there were alternating layers of soil and stone so that the structure would be stronger. However, one castle could be built in eight days if enough people assisted in the building. The castle could be accessed by either wooden stairs or a flying bridge. The bailey was below the motte, and it was surrounded by a wooden fence to protect the inhabitants. William continued to build these castles during his reign in locations where the people usually rebelled. This “[reasserted] his authority” because it gave people the impression that William’s feared army was nearby (Trueman). As soon as “the people of England had been tamed,” William began planning the production of stone castles (Trueman). These stone castles eventually evolved into the sturdy and defensive structures known as concentric castles. Concentric castles were made of stone and had...

...provide comfort on a mental level as well. For artists, the state that occupies their mind is crucial to either succeeding, or failing with their craft. In George Orwell’s Keep The Aspidistra Flying, Gordon Comstock is a writer who firmly believes that the art of writing cannot be accomplished if an artist is fueled by the ‘money god.’ By embarking on a personal journey against the forces of capitalism evident in society, Gordon Comstock finds himself on the verge of complete poverty, with no improvement as an artist, then when he was a middle-class citizen. On the opposite end of things, is Stephen Gordon in The well of Loneliness, by Radclyffe Hall, who has grown up in a wealthy home her entire life, and has never had to sacrifice her work in order to work to support herself monetarily. Looking at these two artists, a reader is able to see that monetary wealth does play a significant role on an artist’s career, and can see between the two protagonists being scrutinized, that one must contain this wealth. Wealth is a privilege that opens many doors for a person, allowing for a predetermined path to success. This path is carved out not only by familial history and social standing, but also by the lack of adversity that an individual will have to face when trying to succeed as an artist. In Orwell’s Keep the Aspidistra Flying, Gordon Comstock is someone who detests the capitalist society he lives in, so much so, that he has left his professional job as a sacrifice to improve...

...As a citizen of the United States we are granted with many rights like the freedom of speech, the freedom of press, and the freedom of assembly. These rights can be found in the Bill of Rights which is a part of our constitution. In the Bill of Rights there are ten amendments stating what a citizen is either protected by or has the right to do. One of these rights being that we are allowed to bear arms which is our Second Amendment. However, that sentence can be interpreted in many ways. Legislation is not as concrete as it seems. Legislation can be interpreted from the government and sometimes is created off the idea of what something means rather than what is says.Take the Second Amendment for example, it states you can bear arms so does that mean you can have any type of weapon even though it can be very dangerous and pose a threat to others? Or because the Second Amendment only states that as a citizen you have the right to have a gun, does that mean you can have a gun even though you are a convicted criminal or murderer as long as you are a U.S. citizen? It has become controversial whether or not we should allow for everybody to have a gun. People argue that society has become more unsafe due to the fact that it’s so easy for almost anyone to buy a gun and also because of how advanced and dangerous these weapons can be. According to Alex Yablon in his article “15 Statistics That Tell the Story of Gun Violence This Year” from the time period of 2005-2015 there were 301,797...

...The Right to Bear Arms Katie Bruner BCOM275 January 4, 2011 Christine Taylor Doctor's Asking About Guns in the Home Recently the discussion on the radio was about pediatricians asking parents about firearms in the household. I found an article with basic pros and cons to this subject. Law are put into place to keep the public safe, but sometimes those law start to step on the toes of Americans’ rights. Is it really necessary for my pediatrician to ask me about my gun collection or if I even have one? The Second Amendment is a powerful one, but people are making it difficult for any ordinary citizen to enjoy this right. According to (Constitution.org, 10/1), the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Constitution.org, 11/2) says “The militia, when properly formed, is in fact the people themselves….all men capable of bearing arms.” The Second Amendment was ultimately formed so that the government cannot become too strong and overpower the people. This means anyone in America has the right to bear arms. Now I understand the need to put some regulation on this right for obvious reasons. But what I do not understand is what having a gun has to do with my children’s well baby check-ups. When reading this article Kids and Guns: Why Doctors Have a Right to Know, it say how a pediatrician told the mother...

...Dawn Branscombe 21st Century Skills: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving March 20, 2016 Chip Hellman To Ban or Not to Ban With gun violence on the rise, some lawmakers have decided to argue for the banning of guns. (Vizzard, 2015) Over the years, there have been many arguments between citizens and lawmakers whether to ban guns or not. With mass shootings in Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Arizona in recent years, the argument has been brought back to the surface. However, still no gun control legislation has been passed (Vizzard, 2015). The second amendment states individuals have the right to bear arms (Sipf, 2015) protecting themselves from harm. The right to bear arms is a constitutional right; legally protecting oneself should be the right of every living person, and should not be taken away. The second amendment was set in a time very different from current days. There were no school shootings, no gang activity, and there were no movie theaters for a person to walk into and start shooting. The gun policy has not changed in decades, with that, does the second amendment still apply. In 1993, both the Brady Handgun Prevention Act (commonly termed the Brady Law) which had expired in 2004 and federal assault weapon restrictions laws were passed, since then little impact has been seen. (Vizzard, 2015) After a group of mass shootings happened around the United States, a few of the states have “placed additional restrictions on magazine capacities of semi-automatic...

...The invention of weapons have dated back to 1364 when human first recorded the use of firearm. However, many severe death results developed a dilemma that people had been debating about in the past century. A possible solution of this repeated problem is to add limitations on the right to bear arms or the means to keep a weapon. President Barack Obama recently stated that, “We know that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest gun deaths. So the notion that gun laws don’t work, or just will make it harder for law-abiding citizens and criminals to still get their guns is not borne out by the evidence.” This thus shows that there are issues disregarding whether fire arm restrictions have an impact on American citizens. As a result...

...My Essay on Gun Control for my English Class: Gun Control – Should We, Or Should We Not? The issue of gun control has come up recently as an important decision opportunity for our country. Many people are asking whether guns really are the helpful tool that many of us have been saying they are, or if they are the killing machines they have recently been publicized as. Gun Control: The Great Cop-out by Jared Machaud and Gun Control and the Constitution by David B. Rivkin Jr. and Andrew M. Grossman effectively display the anti-gun control side of this discussion; whereas The Second Amendment is all for Gun Control by Adam Winkler and Making Gun Control Happen by Patrick Radden Keefe display the pro-gun control side. In my views, guns are a helper in a time of crisis when help is too far away, or unwilling to come. Rather than put more restrictions on guns and gun owners, we should maintain the ability to protect ourselves and our fellow Americans through the use of firearms. As we take a look at the way gun control advocates are planning on enforcing gun control, you may start to even question why we would even contemplate using such tedious means. The idea that limiting the size of a magazine or regulating the type of gun you can purchase or even doing something as simple as a background check will stop murders like the Connecticut shooting from happening is ridiculous. In Making Gun Control Happen the author, Patrick Radden Keefe, writes as an advocate to gun control...

...Team Debate Paper Team c BCOM/275 June 10, 2013 Rebecca B. Team Debate Paper The second amendment provides that “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” In short this is a right for civilians to bear arms. This amendment within a group of amendments was written in 1787. When it was drafted as an amendment it was done with the best intentions but lately in today’s society there is a growing argument that begs the questions to revisit this amendment. Everything from a caliber of a weapon to gun laws to background checks has changed drastically, but so have the laws. Some say the laws are fine the way they are, while others say the laws need to be changed. The Pros of Stricter Laws Against Re-selling of Guns and Trafficking Since the resent tragedies involving guns violence continues to increase in the United States, stricter laws against the reselling and trafficking of guns has been a major controversy. One topic up for discussion is whether the trafficking of guns through gun shows and gun dealers can assist in the decrease of gun violence. Bearing arms is the right of the people and to take away guns conflict with these laws. Instead of focusing on banning guns completely, the government should focus on stricter laws regarding the loop holes within the gun shows and the process of purchasing guns from gun dealers. According to “Coalition To Stop Gun Violence”...

...Gun Control: Protecting Society The second amendment states that “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” The second amendment protects the right of the people to have weapons. Gun control should be extended because the crime rate would go down. Increased gun control measures such as background checks, restoring the ban on assault weapons, regulating ammunition and magazines, banning sales to domestic violence offenders, and creating a waiting period with training and registration to purchase a gun would greatly reduce crime in the U.S. Since 1984, there have been at least 44 mass shootings with 3 or more victims where the shooter used...
