...Song by Norman Mailer portrays the execution of Gary Gilmore and the events leading up to it. Mailer is found to notable for his portrayal of Gilmore in The Executioner’s Song through the way he tells the storyline behind the murders Gilmore had committed. The Executioner’s Song was primarily made to represent the national debate over the death sentence. Mailer romanticizes Gilmore life, decisions and death by using several rhetorical strategies to apply Gilmore's story to the audience. Mailer novelized the story of Gary Gilmore as the first person to be legally executed in the United States following the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976 by the U.S. Supreme Court. Gilmores execution occurred in Utah which is centered...

...John Kerry John Kerry is running for president to make America stronger at home and more respected in the world. He has a plan to restore the values that have always made America a leader in the world. He has a plan to create good-paying jobs at home - jobs that let American families get ahead in an America where the middle class is growing, not being squeezed. He has a plan to make health care a right for all Americans. He has a plan to make this nation independent from Middle East oil. And he has a plan to modernize and strengthen America's military and lead a new era of alliances - so young Americans are never put in harm's way because we insisted on going it alone. John Kerry is running for president to answer the call to service - just as he has answered that call all his life. He was born on December 11, 1943 at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Colorado. His father, Richard, volunteered in the Army Air Corps during World War II. His mother, Rosemary, was a lifelong community activist. As he was about to graduate from Yale, John Kerry volunteered to serve in Vietnam. His leadership, courage, and sacrifice earned him a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Combat V, and three Purple Hearts. In Vietnam, John Kerry saw the lives of his fellow soldiers put at risk because some leaders in Washington were making bad decisions. When he returned home, he became a spokesman for Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) and later co-founded Vietnam Veterans of America. John Kerry then went...

...The terrors of the wars 3 In the House of Representatives which met in December, 1855, the anti-Nebraska men were divided among themselves, and the Know-Nothings held the balance of power. No candidate for the speakership, however, was able to command a majority, and finally, after it had been agreed that a plurality would be sufficient, the contest closed, on the one hundred and thirty-third ballot, with the election of a Republican, N. P. Banks. Meanwhile in the South, the Whigs were rapidly leaving the party, pausing a moment with the Know-Nothings, only to find that their inevitable resting-place, under stress of sectional feeling, was with the Democrats. On Washington's birthday, 1856, the Know-Nothing national convention met at Philadelphia. It promptly split upon the subject of slavery, and a portion of its membership sent word offering support to another convention which was sitting at Pittsburgh, and which had been called to form a national organization for the Republican party. A third assembly held on this same day was composed of the newspaper editors of Illinois, and may be looked upon as the organization of the Republican party in that state. At the dinner following this informal convention, Lincoln, who was one of the speakers, was toasted as "the next United States Senator." Some four months afterward, in Philadelphia, the Republicans held their first national convention. Only a few years previous its members had called themselves by various names--Democrats...

...Activity 3 I choose to do the Who are the Amercians exercise for Chapter 9 for this activtiy. Chapter 9 is all about political parties and the people that represent those parties. Our book focuses on 3 main parties all though there are more the most imporant ones are covered here. The book uses a series of charts on page 365 to show us who makes up these parties. The chart breaks it down into these catagories age, gender, race, income, education, and region that they live in. The statistics are quite suprising in some ways. The perecent of black people that are democratic as opposed to republicians is alarming, 86% of black people are democrats only 7% are repubilcan. In fact the only ethnicity that has a higher percentage of reublicans is white. Another interesting stat is that Americans making over 75,000 dollars per year are almost equal in perecentage of republicans to democrats. I would have expected that a significantly larger portion of people in that bracket would be republican. Another interesting statistic i noticed was that the older we get the more likley we are to be republicans. Due to the current eeconomic situation of the country I feal it is more likley that the democratic party will see more growth in the near future. I am a white male and I grew up in a rural small town in the south and i was raised a christian, I currently make less then 20,000 dollars per year, I am working on achieving my college education. The statistics show that i have a pretty high percentage...

...Janda 1 Sandip Janda April 11, 2011 6nd Period I-Search The Life of a Vietnam War Veteran “Sorry kids, Mr. Watson will not be able to come in this year and talk to you all about his experience of the Vietnam War. It’s too difficult for him, to express the pain he went through during the war and after”. As Mrs. Harvey explain to all of us y Mr. Watson is unable to make it this year I sat there wondering why. What made it so difficult not only for him but for all Vietnam veterans to share their experiences with other people. And I am writing this paper to find what why it is hard for these veterans to share and also what kind of conditions do they go through when coming back home. I am not completely unaware about Vietnam War veterans. I know a few things about life of a Vietnam veteran. For example, I know that they are usually suffering from some type of mental health issue. Also many of them are afraid having cancer due to Agent Orange. I am aware that they don’t like to share stories of the war to society or even close ones. Most importantly, I recognize that these men are going through many problems due to that war. Janda 2 Although I did have a general knowledge of Vietnam War Veterans, I wanted to further enhance my knowledge of the topic. The greatest way I felt to got more edcucated abouit this subject was to interview James Watson, Vietnam War Veteran. I have never really understood the motivation and necessary of their problems. I wanted to know how...

...Kwan Ho Derrick Lui Macro Economics Professor Chartier 10/25/2004 Bush and Kerry under the Four Economic Issues As the presidential election date is approaching, it is time for Americans to make the important decision on whether to vote for Senator Kerry or President Bush. This decision may very well depends on the individual as the elected candidate will cause a different impact for each American. This essay will examine the position and programs of each presidential candidate under the four main economic issues in the United States: healthcare, taxation, international trade and environment policy. The first economic issue is Healthcare. As we all know, healthcare cost in the United States is comparatively more expensive than other countries. This is also the reason why many workers in the United States require healthcare benefits. Cost in healthcare is simply too high for an average American to afford if anything happens to them and therefore, many people purchase health insurance. However, having health insurance does not solve the high cost in healthcare because premiums are expensive and not all could afford it. Senator Kerry plans to reduce the cost of health insurance, health care bills and medicine, as well as improving medical efficiency to cut administrative cost. He asserts to cut premium costs by reimbursing business for 75 percent of the cost of catastrophic care since a single catastrophic case can raise the price of health insurance dramatically...

...The 28 hours Joe Biden spent in New York City at the end of last week were a whirlwind of activity—much of it feeding the mounting speculation that he is inching ever closer to launching a late-starting presidential campaign. Biden stood alongside Attorney General Loretta Lynch and announced an $80 million plan to clear the backlog of rape kits in police departments around the country. He appeared with Governor Andrew Cuomo at a rally with some of the city's most powerful unions to support Cuomo's push to hike the minimum wage. He made his now-famous appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He took part in an evening roundtable for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. And, the next day, he delivered remarks at a 9/11 memorial aboard the Intrepid Museum, at which firefighters, cops, and other first responders chanted, “Run, Joe, run!” Each of these events was freighted with political meaning. For some, the turn on Colbert, with Biden expressing his enduring anguish about the loss of his son Beau and his heartfelt doubts about his ability to rise emotionally to the rigors of a campaign, was the most telling, signaling what many in the political establishment have believed for weeks: that for all of Biden's dalliances with a bid, he would in the end find himself unable to get to yes. And that may still prove true. But fewer than 12 hours after the Colbert interview aired, Biden partook in a meeting that signaled something entirely different. The meeting appeared...

...her stomach, and it was already worse off than her head. Long drives were not her forte. She wished that there was room in the front seat with Kerry and Angie, where at least she could have tied herself down with a seat belt. But Angie was driving, and Kerry's hand was glued to the radio, searching vainly through static bands. Though the road was doing its best to slow them down, they were, nevertheless, too far south into Mexico to catch San Diego's stations. Glancing out of the window at the brittle tumbleweed, the baked orange hills, and dry, cracked ravines, Shani felt as if she had crossed into another world, rather than merely into another country. "Can't get anything on this damn thing," Kerry Ladd said, fretting as usual. "Turn it off," Shani said. "I have a headache as it is." "I've got to have music," Kerry said, snapping in a cassette. Pat Benatar started wailing about precious time. Kerry wasn't the most considerate of friends. But Shani didn't complain. The grinding guitar was the lesser of two evils. Constant external distraction was necessary to keep strung-out Kerry from exploding. "I've got to turn off the air conditioning, again," Angie Houston warned, wiping a long straight strand of blonde hair from her hazel eyes as she flipped a switch next to the radio. "We're beginning to overheat." "I don't want to sweat," Kerry complained. With the cool air turned off, the rise in temperature was almost immediate. "Do you want to walk?" Angie asked, turning down the song's...

...of America had shifted from 2004 to 2008.The media played a role in how the public viewed the topics at play. How the candidates communicated to the public also made these two election years starkly different from each other. In 2004, the Bush Jr. vs. Kerry campaign showcased different points of views that resonated deeply along party lines. Bush’s conservative view highlighted national security, a strong moral code, and less government in business. His “War on Terror” and the recent uplift in the economy struck a deep cord with other conservative (right-wing) voters. On the other hand, his opponent Kerry’s liberal view emphasized more government, opposition to the war in Iraq, and economic issues. Bush was successful in positioning himself as a decisive leader who responded swiftly to the attacks of September 2011. 1 He portrayed his opponent John Kerry as a “flip flopper” and one who was incapable of protecting the American people. Americans vote for the candidate that best represents their point of view. With that said, those who focused on terrorism and moral codes sided with Bush. In contrast to those who were concerned about the war in Iraq, and economic challenges such as jobs and health care sided with Kerry. 2 The strong feelings of polarization played a role in this election. As Edward Carmines and James Stimson demonstrated, the collapse of the racial issue into the traditional government activism issue set in motion a domino effect, mobilizing and pulling...

...The following musical piece called Born in the U.S.A. is a musical piece written and performed by Bruce Springsteen. It illustrates both the aftermath and the previous life of an American soldier that has been fighting during the war in Vietnam. The narrator is somewhat described as a sort of outlaw in the American community, before he is sent to Vietnam that is. The following quotation from the first verse characterizes this pretty well. “End up like a dog that's been beat too much, till you spend half your life just covering up“ It is the rarest amount of people that strives to be illustrated as a dog that has been beaten up, spending it is entire life, trying to cover up its past. I therefore think it is fair enough to conclude that we are dealing with a to some extent goon of America. It is definitely not a person from the upper classes of the American families. The text actually shows that the reason of his voyage was some hometown jam (maybe a brawl). “Got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand” A goon that suddenly would have his identity changed from low-life to national patriot and hero, by joining sides with the anti-communist forces, led by the U.S.A. That is what he probably thought he would become, but Springsteen exposes the reality quite differently. The soldier did not really receive a welcome of a hero, neither of a patriot when he returned home. The reality was a fear of the shadow of the penitentiary. ¨ In addition, whilst...

...Brian P 9 October 2013 Meyer On September 17, 2007 former presidential candidate John Kerry was speaking to some students at the University of Florida, when something unexpected happened. At the end of the speech there was a question and answer session. However, when Andrew Meyer, a student of the U.F., started to ask his questions to Kerry, his microphone was cut off and he was asked to leave by some police officers. Meyer’s refusing to leave willingly was tased while several police offices held him down. There is even a video of Meyer being tased on YouTube. Was it wrong for the campus police to taser him, or were their actions justified? Did they use excessive force due to the overwhelming amount of police who were holding him, or were they in fear he could have hurt someone including himself? First, Meyer’s First Amendment right to free speech was blatantly violated; second, Meyer never should have been tased due to how many officers were involved in arresting him. Initially, Meyer was standing at the microphone asking his questions to John Kerry. When a university host standing behind Meyer did not like his line of questioning, the host gave the cut off sign to whoever was controlling the microphone. Without probable cause several police officers came over and told Meyer he must leave. If the officers would not have stopped him from speaking, he probably would not have been tased. The bottom line is Meyer never should have been put into that situation...

...Stop the Sun Essay Ethan Carper 9/5/13 The main character in the story “Stop the Sun”, by Gary Paulsen, is a man who was in the Vietnam War and his son, named Terry, is wondering why his father is acting strange so much. Let’s start by explaining about the father and why he is “Traumatized”. Terry’s Father, named George, was an American soldier fighting in the Vietnam War, which let alone is a horrifying experience. His father is basically traumatized, mainly by one event though, or the only one he shared with Terry. His father was with a platoon of 54 men and they were walking through a field when they were ambushed by the enemy, there was gun fire everywhere and his father lay down on the ground. He waited and then he thought he saw his friend Jackson, he was wrong it was Jackson though but only half of him. After the gunfire stopped he yelled to see if any of the other Marines were alive but when he shouted he got no response, besides enemy gunfire. When Terry found out about this, his outlook on his father completely changed. Terry Erickson was a tall 13 year old boy. He always wandered why his father acted weird. One day Terry finally had the courage to ask about Vietnam, because he knew that’s what caused it. After his father told him that one night, stated in the previous paragraph, he tried and now continues to try to understand and maybe in the future help his father. So as any reader can see Terry [the son] and George [the father] are both the...
