On February 22 the Kettle Moraine School for Arts and Performance [KM Perform] will be presenting their own rendition of Little Shop of Horrors. Pulling off a cult classic like this seems to be a challenge at first glance. However so, Perform students are quickly rising to the occasion. Preparing for a musical is a tiresome, work-intensive process, much more than a mere snap of the fingers. Everyone working on this musical has only six to eight weeks to prepare. For the cast, there’s a lot to do, from music to choreography, and dialogue to monologues.
“I think one of the challenges is the music because it is up tempo and fast paced and very wordy, like it’s all tongue twisters.” said Joy Bartoli, the voice of Audrey II. “The hardest part is the puppet because we won’t have a lot of time to work with it and we won’t even get it till much later. First of all learning how to use it, then timing with the songs and dialogue, that’d be a lot for the people working the puppet …show more content…
Most props from past musicals or plays will be reused for this one giving more time for other things. As for the prop of Audrey II, (For those of you who don’t know, Audrey II is a giant man eating plant.), the school will be renting the prop from Skylight Musical Theaters. But they couldn’t rent the grabbing arm props of Audrey II along with the main piece, so the crew is building it themselves. Making it the most challenging thing to build for this musical. Working on sets and props for shows are about collaboration and teamwork. There are three different groups of students working on this, all of which continuously keep picking up from where the last group had left off on. Collaboration like that, being unable to communicate with the people you’re working with, is a stretch. But it’s going better than expected.
