...Key to Life Jamiel D. Graves Gen/200 September 5, 2012 Latashia Bates Key to Life Personal responsibility is exactly as its name suggests. It's personal meaning it starts and ends within a person. We should all practice personal responsibility in our daily lives. In order to be a good parent, good child, good student or good employee we have to start with personal responsibility. Personal responsibility to me means that "I" must always accept responsibility for my actions or lack there of. In their article [ (Hersh & Schneider, 2005) ] found that “Several nationally visible institutions--e.g., Harvard, Duke, and Stanford--have made ethics an integral part of their degree requirements. Their high profile commitments reflect a broader trend, discernible across the academy, toward articulating ethics and values and the cultivation of personal and social responsibility as important outcomes of college education.” It's taking an inventory on your life, a completely honest inventory. If you are not honest with yourself you are not practicing personal responsibility. Coming from a life filled with mistakes, regrets, and a few accomplishments, I've learned that taking a personal inventory of my actions helps me to put life in perspective, and learn the lessons I need to learn from past experiences be they good or bad. If I apply this principal to my everyday life it will afford me the tools I need to be successful. Swarner, L.E. (2005) stated that, “When considered...

...“The secret to a perfect life is not just making money or possessing luxury objects, but is simply developing your inner self.” My Martial Arts instructor rambled on while my eyes grew teary and sleepiness began to overcome me. Little did I know that his quote about developing one’s inner self would cause such a profound impact in my life. When I was 12 years old, I joined a Martial Arts school. When I first joined, I never fully understood the connection between performing the arduous moves to the real world. I simply thought of Martial Arts as a way to learn cool moves shown throughout karate movies at the time. But as I progressed slowly – yet steadily – in my education in Martial Arts, I began to grasp the covert message. Practice. Patience. Persistence. These three values are the most important lessons Martial Arts have taught me. By practicing the punches and kicks continuously, my body begins to wear out and the thought of giving up becomes more appealing by the second. Yet I emerge persistent. By being persistent, I learn to not only endure the difficult workout in the Martial Arts, but also endure any future hardships. With practice, I have grown confident and strong, both mentally and physically. With the values that Martial Arts taught me, I will learned to be instrumental in my pursuit in learning different things in academics and in various cultures. I also learned the covert message to a perfect life: “developing my inner...

...Many may wonder what the key to a healthy life style might be. There are many answers for this question depending on who is asked, but there is one thing they will all have in common, physical fitness. In today’s society, there are many different ways of achieving physical fitness. These can range from the popular circuit training P-90X DVD’s, Cross Fit gyms, running or cycling, swimming, old school body builder gyms, yoga centers, regular fitness centers, or just good old fashion recreational sports. There is something out there for everyone, but it is up to each individual to find out what suits his or her lifestyle the best. An individual must also know his or her physical limitations so that he or she does not strain the body or incur more serious injuries. Physical fitness is an amazing thing, it helps the participant feel better physically, perform better mentally, and transforms the human body visually. Being physically fit is something that is somewhat overlooked in today’s society. It is constantly preached that if a person exercise’s regularly he or she will feel better. This is true, but it is important for that person to know his or her physical limitations when exercising. Exercise must be done on a regular basis and ascend gradually to be effective. If someone overstrains his or her body he or she will be tired, sore, and lose the drive to continue exercising. The key is for them to gradually build their way up to intense physical activity, sporadic sprints...

...things we wish we knew when we were younger that we know now. We look back on life and wonder if someone would have told us how to live life a few years ago, we would not be in the same situation we are in now. For example, a relative telling you to not regret anything you do in life, or to always live in the moment and not look back. Advice is key to living a great life. If one listens to the people who have already experienced what he or she is now going through, one could embrace life and live it to the best of their potential. One should listen to their elders; they know what they are talking about. Even though I have not experienced a lot in my life, I have been through high school and know now how to handle it. One piece of advice is to always be independent and not thrive on following the crowd or trying to look “cool.” I, personally, have always been independent and love being on my own. If you try to be a follower, you will not experience life for yourself; you will be experiencing life through another person. Being independent during high school will also help you when you go to college and even after that. If you want to go away for school or are planning on moving out of your parents’ home, you will not have mommy and daddy to depend on. Not depending on anyone but yourself will bring you closer to finding out who you really are and you will have a better understanding of what life feels like when you are on your own. Not believing everything people tell...

...Philosophy of Life – Key Components PHI1000 – Intro to Philosophy August 7, 2011 Introduction The card activity in this unit opened my eyes to several positions that are interesting, but my personal philosophy of life focuses on a specific three issues. First, there is Free Will, which is the theory that we have the ability to choose our own destiny. Second is Reason and Experience, the theory that we gain knowledge using reason and experience. Finally, Personal Identity, that I conclude, we define by using free will (choice of destiny), then reason and experience (how and why we reach our destiny). Free Will Free Will comes into play because it relates to one’s own desires. “What freewill tries to account for is our introspective conviction that we are in control of many of our choices, and thus our destiny - that we are free to think and decide”. (Voss, 1997) The question that arises when we have free will is “Who do I want to be?” versus “Who am I supposed to be?” Subsequently, if one is pondering about whether to believe in free will or not, then one is already committed to its existence. The choices that I make help define who I am. “Throughout his life, every normal person deliberates, imputes responsibility, and recommends or proscribes courses of action. In each of these activities, he presupposes that alternatives are available to himself and others -- for it would make no sense to deliberate over what one had no choice about, or to recommend to a...

...money delivered at the death of a key person is often the only thing that keeps your enterprise alive. They know that key person life insurance proceeds are likely to be the only money coming in at a time when so much money is going out. The definition of key person life insurance varies, but in a nut shell it is life insurance designated to replace the loss of an individual whose value is important to the business. Typically this is meant to be someone other than the business owner, such as one or more employees whose role is important. These are the people you'd say, "I don't know how we'd get along without..." and whom you will have to replace if they leave. Who are your key people? Why...

...Negativity of Gaming After reading the essay “An Hour a Day is Key to Success in Life” a reader can consider several opposing views than the author, Jane McGonigal, brings forth; spending hours on video games can negatively impact one’s self-esteem, increase cyber bullying, and limit other possible, less risky opportunities for bonding between friends and family. To begin, spending time gaming can negatively impact one’s self-esteem and rather than becoming “more optimistic, more creative, more focused,” as McGonigal claims, equally gaming can damage one’s self-worth making he/she not feel good enough, or successful, and even a failure. Habitually playing video games that inter-act in a social network with other players, together with competitive...

...How Ambitions Play a Key Factor in Life Many people have different views about ambitions, so the word ambition has many different meanings depending on who it is asked upon. I believe everyone should have ambitions in life to become successful. Ambitions play a key factor in our lives every day. To me ambition is a strong desire to achieve goals to succeed in life. It is the inner force that has led many people to become successful. Ambition helps us get through life, without it life is incomplete. Ambition is the motivation needed to help all of us to work towards our set goals throughout our future plans in life. I have always strived to set goals and achieve them no matter what it was. One of my main goals was to receive my high school diploma so I could attend college. My parents always stressed to me how important it was to get an education. With my will power and ambition, I did not give up, I strived for excellence. I wanted to make my parents proud of me. This taught me how important it is to achieve goals. Learning the importance of being ambitious helped me achieve my set goals and it helped me realize my ambitions in life. My personal ambitions have a huge effect on my professional aspirations. One day I want to be able to a decent livelihood so I can provide for my family. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a variety of things such as a doctor, lawyer, and an architect. Later on during my junior year of high school I finally decided that I wanted to study business...

...I’ll be happy when I get married and have children.” “I’ll be happy when I have my own home.” “I’ll be happy when I land that job.” “I’ll be happy when . . .” HAVE you felt like that? And when you attained your goal or acquired the desired item, did your happiness last? Or did it begin to fade? To be sure, reaching a goal or obtaining something we have desired can make us happy, but that kind of happiness can be fleeting. Lasting happiness is not based solely on achievements or acquisitions. Rather, like good physical health, true happiness depends on a variety of factors. Each of us is unique. What makes you happy may not make someone else happy. Additionally, we change as we grow older. Yet, evidence suggests that some things are more consistently associated with happiness. For example, genuine happiness is linked to finding contentment, avoiding envy, cultivating love for others, and building mental and emotional resilience. Let us see why. 1. FIND CONTENTMENT “Money is a protection,” observed a wise student of human nature. But he also wrote: “A lover of silver will never be satisfied with silver, nor a lover of wealth with income. This too is futility.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10; 7:12) His point? While we may need money to survive, we should avoid greed, for it is insatiable! The writer, King Solomon of ancient Israel, actually experimented to see whether wealth and luxurious living fostered true happiness. “I did not deny myself anything that I desired,” he...

(Calbom and Keane) This is a serious problem because many health professionals say that a person should eat seven servings of vegetables and two serving of fruits per day. (Calbom and Keane) Consequently, this brings me to my recent decision to improve my health thru nutrition and in doing so; I was introduced to the wonderful world of Juicing. Juicing is not only great tasting, but has endless nutritional benefits. Author Carol Stack wrote, that juicing allows individuals to consume large amounts of nutrients without having to eat multiple foods several times a day. (Stack) I have learned that juicing multiple vegetables and fruits at the same time allows one to consume vast amounts of vitamins and minerals that may not be achieved by eating three square meals. Therefore, it is my opinion that when an individual is able to acquire their vitamins from raw foods and enzymes; they are improving their health which ultimately will improve their quality of life. Research has shown that ingesting fruits and vegetables on a daily basis can assist with reducing an individual chance of acquiring cancer, degenerative diseases and possibly Alzheimer’s. ...Afternoon Short Essay Life is full of constant struggle. Just when you think life is great and nothing can bring you down, you drop the key, and you fall. You wonder if you could ever make it back up those stairs. In the short film, Meshes in the Afternoon, you see a young lady walk up a flight of stairs to unlock a door, she drops the key and it falls down the stairs where she has to go back down and retrieve it. Without this key she cannot enter her house, but we see later that a man has no problem with the key in the same door. What if the key is not really a key? What if the key is the key to happiness? What if happiness isn’t what we think it is? What if it’s just an illusion of what makes us fall down the stairs. It’s never set in stone how our lives will end up. You have to fight through the obstacles in your way if you want to be happy in life. The same is true in the Meshes in the Afternoon. We see the lady running up and down stairs. I believe this is how her life has been. She has been in an up and down struggle with life. There have been hazards on her path to happiness; this is why we see her hesitate when we see the knife on the stairs. This is the same in life today. It’s never easy, but we keep pushing, we keep running up those stairs. We also see the lady in the film multiple times with a key. This key also has transformed into a knife. To me, in correlation to the stairs, the key serves the purpose of happiness. Even though the key can take her on the path...

Besides these simple acts of generosity, I am also involved in variety of different volunteering activities (e.g. ARL, and PH Library, and Habitat for Humanity). To this day, volunteering plays a major part of my life; stating the Key Club pledge for the first time was definitely this spark. It was the spark that has opened my eyes to the world of volunteering and giving back to the community that has given me so much already. Being a member of Southeast Polk Key Club has definitely changed my life, and it all started in a math room on the third floor....
