During the months of March through May the weather is delightful; averaging temperatures range from 78 to 85 degrees during the day and 68 to 76 degrees in the evening. The beaches are tranquil, filled with white warm sand and crystal blue water abundant with tropical fish and endless coral reefs. Palm trees line the beaches and streets, ever so softly blowing in the gentle breeze. A vacationer will spend the day at Mallory Square watching a host of vendors, street performers, and local artist showcasing their extraordinary talents, only to be cleared out by early evening to make a peaceful setting for families and lovers to watch the sunset. As the sun sets for the day it looks as if it is slowly melting into the water. After this experience, nearly everyone will be ready for a bite to eat. The food here, a large amount of which is grown or caught locally, is flavorful, fresh, and bright, resembling a painter’s color wheel. Vacationers can hardly wait to indulge in the feast laid out before them. When dinner is done most are ready for excitement. The nightlife is electric, filled with many activities for both the young and old. ...Going Lobstering It was midsummer in Florida. My aunt Susan asked me if I wanted to go to Key West and go lobstering with her and my cousins for the weekend. Susan then added all expenses paid. Several things ran through my mind all at once. I have never been to Key West. I have never been lobstering. What else do I have to do in the middle of the summer? I just could not pass this up, so off I went. We arrive in Key West that Thursday evening via my aunt’s huge white, red and yellow, cigarette boat. Most people think it reminds them of McDonalds, but not me. The boat was sleek and fast. On the open water the boat goes 75 knots which is about 50 MPH, fast for a boat. We stayed on Flamingo Key, which is actually two keys up from Key West. We docked the boat in the marina near our hotel. Our hotel sat right on the beach. That night we went to Sloppy Joe’s on Duval Street. I had their famous Sloppy Joe Sandwich. It was awesome! Duval Street is one of the craziest places I have ever been. There are “flaming” gay people, beach bums, tourist and chickens, yes live chickens everywhere. On the first day lobstering, the water was so clear you could see the images of the reefs and fish below. The sky was a brilliant blue and not a single cloud in the sky. It was like destination key weird. Fantasy Fest started over twenty-five years ago when merchants from Key West where brain storming and came up with the novel idea of having adults dress up for Halloween. After a few years the organizers decided that this annual event needed a theme to reign in the creativity and they came up with titles like “Tinsletown Dreams,” “Junglemania,” “Call of the Wild” and this year’s theme “Key Weird on the Disorient Express”. Because Fantasy Fest draws so many people hotel rooms go for $300-$400 per night and usually sell out. One must plan far ahead to get accommodations on the island or anywhere in the Florida Keys during this week. I began my trip at the fall bike rally in Daytona called biketoberfest, which is always a blast. My queen and I spent Thursday through Saturday in Daytona, then on Sunday morning loaded the car and attached my Harley to a homemade motorcycle hauler and headed toward Key West for the adventure of a lifetime. At the age of 14, Henry left school during his 8th grade year to work in Ohio for the Harkness Family, who were the family of Henry’s mother’s second husband. On November 9, 1853, Flagler married Mary Harkness with whom he had three children. After working in the salt and grain industry for many years, Flagler partnered with John D. ...Journey of the Self The road I’m traveling on I see as a dirt road through a light forest in the mountains of northern California. I’m not sure exactly where I am, but it is a bright day with some clouds and blue skies, but off to the distance I can see storm clouds. All I have with me is my backpack containing a notebook, a pen, a pair of gym shorts, a spare t-shirt, a pack of cigarettes with a lighter, a bottle of water and a couple of granola bars. In my pockets I have a cell phone with a dead battery, a pocketknife, and my wallet with five dollars and my I.D. inside. I’m walking, surrounded by trees of all types. There is a light breeze, but it’s quiet as I walk and look around. As I’m walking, the road is flat and somewhat narrow, but it is easy going for the most part, with random spots where the road becomes rocky and somewhat stressful, but it evens itself out and becomes smooth for a period of time again. I feel happy and serene, but exhausted at times and in need of a bit of rest, but I always continue and begin to walk again. As I’m walking, I come to a two-way fork in the road with a sign in the middle. The sign has two arrows with words printed on them. Each arrow is pointing in the opposite direction of the other. Honor is defined as a source of credit or distinction, and is associated with reverence, dignity, reputation, good name and a good sense of what is morally correct. The key part to honor is having respect for others and for you; the two must act together because without both, there is nothing. I strongly believe that reputation is hard to gain and easily lost. Think about this, every day thousands of planes fly somewhere and there is never any news about a successful landing, but if any of those flights crash, it is all over the news. They must have done this at least a dozen times. The last time it all went wrong. My dad poured the gas and Mat turned the key. A loud bang like a gun shoot startled me, but I did not expect to turn my head to see the most devastating thing. I looked over to where the bang was there were flames coming from under the hood. The bottle of gas my dad was holding was on fire. He was unsure where my son was so he didn’t want to throw the bottle. Instead he tried to shake the bottle that’s when it all went wrong.
