Technology is essential in current business culture. Wal-Mart maintains a centralized information system for its worldwide operations. The decision to centralize its systems involved a great deal of planning and thought; the location and method for the centralization had to be determined. The company’s management identified its objectives and then implemented plans of action to achieve its goal of centralization. After the establishment of the objectives and the selection of the location, management had to devise an organizational chart to identify those people who would have charge of implementation. Management had to define job responsibilities and duties as well as commence organizational development in the centralization location. Once the establishment of the implementation team was completed, management had the responsibility of guiding them. According to Wal-Mart CIO Linda Dillman, larger projects were divided into smaller projects. To make the centralization successful, the team had to stay on track. For this to take place, the correct dosages of effective motivation and knowledge were necessary. Management had the responsibility to monitor the team, and to do so through controlling production and actions. The implementation of this type of systems inherently means that many changes will be necessary during the process. Wal-Mart spends a good deal of time and energy on innovation. One of their goals is the creation of highly efficient stores, in contrast to less efficient superstores of the past. The company outfits all of its new stores with LED lights. It is also in the process of retrofitting hundreds of its current stores with the same energy-saving technology.
