...Asian Criminology (2008) 3:61–73 DOI 10.1007/s11417-007-9040-1 Kidnap for Ransom in South East Asia The Case for a Regional Recording Standard Mohd Kassim Noor Mohamed Received: 27 July 2007 / Accepted: 5 November 2007 / Published online: 15 December 2007 # Springer Science + Business Media B.V. 2007 Abstract Kidnapping for ransom is not a new phenomenon. According to the Control Risk Group, an international risk consultancy, kidnappings of foreign nationals globally have increased by 275% over the past 10 years. High profile incidents such as the tourist kidnappings in 2000 by the Abu Sayyaf group, operating out of the troubled southern region of the Philippines, show that South East Asia has its own regionalised kidnapping hotspots. It is suspected that a high proportion of kidnappings are perpetrated by economically motivated crime groups but it is not possible to estimate with any degree of accuracy what percentage can be attributed to organised crime. This article will provide an overview of the problem, drawing upon existing literature available in the public domain. A typological discussion will show the critical differences between the various categories of kidnapping. The reliability of existing statistics, categorisation and recording of kidnapping for ransom will also be scrutinised, in particular for their variability across the region, to see whether this presents a barrier to a better understanding of the size and seriousness of the problem. As kidnapping for...

...Lincoln’s assassination is significant in U.S. history because of how it was done, his accomplishments as president, and the impact of his death on the US. John Wilkes Booth had originally planned to kidnap Abraham Lincoln in order to continue the exchange of prisoners between the North and the South. Booth had acquired the help of Samuel Arnold, George Atzerodt, David Herold, Michael O’Laughlen, Lewis Powell, and John Surratt to help him kidnap Lincoln. They had planned to do this on March 17, 1865 while Lincoln was riding home from the play, Still Waters Run Deep. The president did not go to the play that night and instead went to a ceremony where a captured confederate flag was being presented to Governor Oliver Morton. The morning of Lincoln’s assassination,...

...Lincoln was a strong supporter of it. They were two different people with different motives, one wanted to end slavery, the other wanted to keep it. Booth being a famous actor was known in the country and was one of Lincoln’s favorite actors. Lincoln may have liked Booth but Booth didn’t like Lincoln. As the war was ending General Ulysses S. Grant, general of the Union Army was wiping out General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army. This was worrying southerners and other Confederacy supporters. John Wilkes Booth knew he had to try and do something so the south wouldn’t lose the war. He and some companions planned to kidnap Lincoln. When they would kidnap him they would take him to Richmond, Virginia, the capital of Virginia and the Confederacy. They would hold him hostage until the north surrendered. On the day they were to do it Lincoln was not in the spot they were to kidnap him so the plan did not work. Then it happened, General Lee surrendered to the Union and the war was over. Some people were happy the Union won others were not. John Wilkes Booth was outraged about it and decided to come up with another plan to avenge the south. He and his companions George Azterodt, Lewis Powell, and David Herold came up with an assassination plan. The plan was planned at a boarding house of Mary Surrat in Washington D: C. They planned to kill President Lincoln, Vice President Johnson, Secretary of State William Seward, and General Ulysses S. Grant. The plan was partially foiled when General...

...One thing someone could learn from this story is that you should never hold a small child hostage for money. In “The Ransom of the Red Chief” by O’Henry, Sam and Bill are in need of some money and decide to hold a ransom. They kidnap a little boy and find out that he is one of the most irritable people ever. One can infer from this story is that the people we originally thought to be antagonists might actually be the protagonists. In the beginning our main characters, Sam and Bill, are in need of money but can’t get any. That is when they decide it would be a good idea to kidnap a child and hold him for ransom. Here, the reader can see that they are going to be following the antagonists around. When they finally get Johnny to the cave...

...In Booth’s diary he included his views on what the assassination meant to him. He explained why he had done what he had did. He said that killing Lincoln wasn’t wrong and god had told him to do what he did. In his diary he explains that the kidnap plan failed because god wanted him to do something more than just kidnap the president, he wanted him to kill him. With the failure of the first plan Booth deeply believed that god was on his side and that what he intended to do was for the country he dearly loved. Even after the assassination when the Union soldiers were after him, Booth believed that whatever happened to him didn’t matter and that he did it for the good of his country. He was filled with sorrow and remorse for being seen as a criminal...

...natural father and he is of the Muslim faith. In an attempt to try to establish a father- daughter relationship, he invited me to the Mosque where he attends holy services. I did not really know much at all about the Muslim faith because I believe in, was born into and raised in the faith of Christianity. The immediate thoughts that came to mind were somewhat colorful. I imagined they would make me wear head wraps and body wraps where the only body part that could be seen were my eyes. I then pictured myself having to sit quietly all day long with my head down, not able to have any social interaction with anyone because I am a woman and I would be considered to be inferior to the men. Lastly, I had the idea that they would try to kidnap me and send me to Afghanistan to become a servant. After I got over my immediate concerns, I thought about the situation on a deeper level. I was obviously being culturally bias and basing my ideas about the Muslim faith on things that I had heard, read about or seen in movies. I had no real evidence to support my arguments on why I should not attend. Besides, this would be the opportunity that I had longed for since I was a little girl; the opportunity to know my real father. I made the decision to attend the ceremony. To my surprise, the service was nothing like my previous thoughts had been. I did not have to wrap myself up like a mummy, but I did have to take off my shoes in order to come in. I did not have to sit quietly all...
