For many years the mines on Putney Mountain were successful employing several hundred men to bring out tons of coal. One summer night a supervisor made a wrong decision to use a car without brakes to haul extra coal to boost his production. Instead, a tragic accident was caused when the car ran off the tracks causing a cave in and a gas explosion killing several dozen men. Unable to get workers, the company removed their equipment, and abandoned the mines. Within weeks many families moved to Charleston while others moved to Howardsville another mining town located forty miles southwest of Charleston, West Virginia in the Allegheny Mountains.
For years, Howardsville was a peaceful town with the mines employing many men who brought out tons

Herbal Plants

...HERBAL MEDICINE FOR ALTERNATIVE HEALTH CARE A Research Paper Presented to The Faculty of the Languages and Literature Department College of Liberal Arts De La Salle University-Dasmariñas Dasmariñas, Cavite in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Course ENGL 102-Communication Arts and Skills II Hannah Khamille Bayalan Marie Pia Iscel Villa Dianne Lherry Landicho March 2008 Chapter I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Plants had been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. For example, ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal plant uses. Indigenous cultures such as African and Native American used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed traditional medical systems in which herbal therapies were used systematically. Scientists found that people in different parts of the globe tended to use the same or similar plants for the same purposes. In the early 19th century, when methods of chemical analysis first became available, scientists began extracting and modifying the active ingredients from plants. Later, chemists began making their own version of plant compounds, beginning the transition from raw herbs to synthetic pharmaceuticals. Over time, the use of herbal medicines declined in favor of pharmaceuticals. Long before the introduction of modern medicines and Western curative methods, herbal medicines had been widely used in the Philippines. The use of medicinal plants or herbs has...

Ecosystem

...Ecosystem of the Mojave Desert Bio/101 March 5, 2012 Ecosystem of the Mojave Desert The Mojave Desert is 54,000 square miles of its own special brand of diversity; it is one desert - rather than a series of separate entities. By becoming aware of the combined identity, appreciation and better understanding of the issues that affect the Mojave Desert can occur on a holistic level. Generally, at the edges of the Mojave are areas where dominant plant and animal species change from one to another and both, to various degrees may be possibly found on the fringes of the other. The Mojave Desert ecosystem evolves from plants and animals which are resources within each other. Adaption to the rough temperatures and little water, these ecosystems finds many ways to survive. This ecosystem plays host to a wide variety of plants and animals living in an environment that humans may think are harsh conditions. Many animals get their energy by eating plants, but desert plants give up the fruit of their production very reluctantly. Sharp spines, such as a cactus, discourage plant-eaters. The Mule deer avoids these obstacles by eating seeds, although safe to eat, they can be hard to find. Many are small and look like grains of sand. The plant's solar energy flows through the ecosystem as Mule deer, and other herbivores like jackrabbits, fall prey to carnivores like great horned owls, coyotes, bobcats, or snakes (Townsend, Harper & Begon, 2000). Survival in the desert cannot occur...

A shape that covers an area A and has a uniform height h has a volume V = Ah. (a) Show that V = Ah is dimensionally correct. (b) Show that the volumes of a cylinder and of a rectangular box can be written in the form V = Ah, identifying A in each case. (Note that A, sometimes called the “footprint” of the object, can have any shape and that the height can, in general, be replaced by the average thickness of the object.) 2. (a) Suppose that the displacement of an object is related to time according to the expression x = Bt2. What are the dimensions of B? (b) A displacement is related to time as x = A sin(2πft), where A and f are constants. Find the dimensions of A. (Hint: A trigonometric function appearing in an equation must be dimensionless.) 3. The period of a simple pendulum, defined as the time necessary for one complete oscillation, is measured in time units and is given by [pic] where [pic] is the length of the pendulum and g is the acceleration due to gravity, in units of length divided by time squared. Show that this equation is dimensionally consistent. (You might want to check the formula using your keys at the end of a string and a stopwatch.) 4....

Discover Your Sales Strength

... Discover Your Sales Strengths Page 3 THE BIG IDEA A huge number of books have been written about sales and finding one’s road to success in achieving exceptional sales performance. Like fresh-off-the-press diet book bestsellers, they promise spectacular results, but lasting improvement in the end is still hard to find. This book identifies the many myths associated with exceptional sales and explains how believing them may negatively affect one’s performance. It will also show how important it is to fit one’s talents into the right job, whether it be as sales representative or sales manager. THE GREAT SALES MYTHS Doctors tell us that kidney stones are one of the most painful medical conditions human beings may suffer from. These small calcium fragments form in the kidney and eventually get stuck in the ureter, between the kidney and the bladder, causing tremendous pain. Fortunately, a treatment is available: ultrasonic-waves. However, people who have had one stone are very likely to have another. So for years, physicians placed such patients on low-calcium diets, thinking that since these stones are made of calcium, cutting down on calcium intake will do the trick. But soon,...

...analyzed in the feathers of cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) from three breeding colonies in the Punjab province, Pakistan. The mean concentrations of Ca, Cd, Fe, Pb and Mn were significantly different between the three study sites (River Chenab, River Ravi and Rawal Lake Reservoir). The mean concentrations of Ca, Cd, Fe and Mn were significantly greater at the River Chenab heronry and Cr, Co, Zn, and Pb concentrations at the River Ravi heronry. The feathers of cattle egrets collected from the Rawal Lake Reservoir heronry were least contaminated. Multivariate statistical methods viz., Factor Analysis based on Principal Component Analysis (FA/PCA); Hierarchical Cluster analyses (HACA), and Correlation Analyses identified relatively similar associations of metals and their sources of input. Metals such as Ca, Mg, and K were related with natural input from parent rock material whereas trace metals viz., Cu, Cd, Co, Pb, Ni, and Zn were associated mainly with anthropogenic processes. Metals such as Fe, Mn, and Li were either correlated with natural input or with anthropogenic activities. Concentration of heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, and Cr were well above the threshold level that can cause adverse effects in birds and pose menace to the cattle egrets population in Pakistan. The study suggested that the feathers of cattle egret could be used as a bio-monitor of the local heavy metals contamination. Keywords Heavy metals Á Multivariate analysis Á...

Ice Cream Dessert

...Chapter I Introduction Ice cream is a frozen dessert usually made from dairy products, such as milk and cream, and often combined with fruits or other ingredients and flavors. Most varieties contain sugar, although some are made with other sweeteners. In some cases, artificial flavorings and colorings are used in addition to the natural ingredients. Philippines’ version for ice cream: Sorbetes is usually produced from unknown factories and sold from carts that roam the streets, exposing it to pollution. Thus, it is also called dirty ice cream; though it is not really dirty as the name implies. Kids love ice cream, and so do grown-ups, but to indulge in this frozen delight can mean a lot of fat and calories, depending on the choices. The calories in a cup of ice cream can vary anywhere from 180 to 600, depending on brand, fat content, sugar content, and flavor. Nonfat or fat-free ice creams contain virtually no fat: vegetable gums are added to make them creamy and mixtures are made in soft serve machines to whip in additional air and ice crystals. Most nonfat ice creams contain 90 to 100 calories per half cup but not all, leaving health-conscious consumers, who avoid calories and fat, fewer options, or none at all. A newly industrialized country, the Philippine economy has been transitioning from one based on agriculture to one based more on services and manufacturing. Despite this, the agricultural sector employs close to 32% of the country's total labor force of around...

Philippine Tattoo

...Batek: Traditional Tattoos Batek: Traditional Tattoos and Identities in Contemporary Kalinga, North Luzon Philippines Analyn Ikin V. Salvador-Amores ABSTRACT In the early 16th century, traditional tattooing is widespread in the Philippines, but very little is known or written about the practice. Sources for the study of traditional tattoos in Northern Luzon are very inadequate and merely make vague statements on the function and symbolic meaning of tattoos, as well as the relationship between the practice and culture as a whole. The statements likewise reveal a distinctly ethnocentric deportment. Until today, tattooing and tattoo designs in the Cordilleras are best understood within the context of headhunting. Headhunting was the only known reason for tattooing, and, to this day, no one knows exactly what tattoos signify. This paper provides insights into the roles and functions of the tattoos, and how the tattoos (batek) become cultural symbols of the intricate rituals brought about by community regimens of the Ilubo, Kalinga. No longer practiced, the batek of the Ilubo is a visually powerful rendering of symmetry and unity of designs. Batek now serve as an archive of culture for the group. Keywords: Tattoo, rites of passage, body adornment, identity, Kalinga INTRODUCTION My anthropological interest in body ornamentation, specifically in traditional tattoos, began in 1990. I met an old Bontoc woman who sold balatinao (red rice) in one of the old market stalls in...

Nursing

...Transcultural Nursing Theory Applied Vulnerable Populations I "Nowhere are the divisions of race, ethnicity and culture more sharply drawn that in the health of the people in the United States. Despite recent progress in overall national health, there are continuing disparities in the incidence of illness and death among African Americans, Latino/Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Alaskan Natives and Pacific Islanders as compared with the US population as a whole." --National Center for Cultural Competence Population addressed Population addressed In 1950, U.S.-born whites made up about 90 percent of the U.S. population. By 2000, this number declined to about 75 percent, and by 2050 non-Hispanic whites will be in the numerical minority (U.S. Census Bureau 2001, 2002). This rapid diversification requires healthcare organizations to pay closer attention to cross-cultural issues if they are to meet the healthcare needs of the nation and continue to maintain a high standard of care. Looking at the Country as a whole the current area of discussion for this paper is the area of Western North Carolina and the population of Asheville, which is a melting pot of cultures which the combination they create is unique to no other. According to the 2006 U.S. Census Bureau statistics for Asheville, N.C. the current demographics break down as follows: Asheville [City] Population (current estimate), 70,400. Buncombe County Population (2006), 222,174, county in...

Prepared under the supervision of Dr. Editha G. Reyes 1. INTRODUCTION The avocado is colloquially known as the Alligator Pear, reflecting its shape and the leather-like appearance of its skin. Avocado is derived from the Aztec word "ahuacatl". Avocados are the fruit from Persea americana, a tall evergreen tree that can grow up to 65 feet in height. Avocados vary in weight from 8 ounces to 3 pounds depending upon the variety. There are dozens of varieties of avocadoes. The rich and creamy Hass variety is the most popular type of avocado in the United States, and 95% of all avocados grown in the United States are produced in California, original home of the Hass variety. They are generally available throughout the year, they are the most abundant and at their best during the spring and summer in California and in October in Florida. While avocados are technically fruits, we have categorized them here as vegetables since this is how they are usually considered from a culinary perspective. Avocados can make a great base for a high-energy smoothie that will satisfy you and...

BMC Health Services Research 2011, 11:135 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1472-6963/11/135 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Impact of bleeding-related complications and/or blood product transfusions on hospital costs in inpatient surgical patients Michael E Stokes1*, Xin Ye2, Manan Shah3, Katie Mercaldi4, Matthew W Reynolds4, Marcia FT Rupnow2 and Jeffrey Hammond2 Abstract Background: Inadequate surgical hemostasis may lead to transfusion and/or other bleeding-related complications. This study examines the incidence and costs of bleeding-related complications and/or blood product transfusions occurring as a consequence of surgery in various inpatient surgical cohorts. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted using Premier’s Perspective™ hospital database. Patients who had an inpatient procedure within a specialty of interest (cardiac, vascular, non-cardiac thoracic, solid organ, general, reproductive organ, knee/hip replacement, or spinal surgery) during 2006-2007 were identified. For each specialty, the rate of bleeding-related complications (including bleeding event, intervention to control for bleeding, and blood product transfusions) was examined, and hospital costs and length of stay (LOS) were compared between surgeries with and without bleeding-related complications. Incremental costs and ratios of average total hospital costs for patients with bleeding-related complications vs. those without complications were estimated using ordinary...

...crops. In Bangladesh, the groundwater As contamination problem is the worst in the world. Ninety-seven percent of the population in the country uses groundwater for drinking and domestic purposes as surfacewater is mismanaged. High levels of As in groundwater are causing widespread poisoning in Bangladesh. Different studies have addressed various aspects of the As issue in Bangladesh. This review is undertaken to give an overview of the latest findings and statistical data on the issue especially on soil, water and food cycle. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a safe limit for As in drinking water of 10 mg LÀ1. A recent survey looked at the As concentrations of drinking water from deep wells in 64 districts in the country and found that 59 had concentrations >10 mg LÀ1 and 43 had concentrations >50 mg LÀ1. Contaminated groundwater is also used for irrigation of paddy rice, which is the main staple food for the population. This practice enhances the level of As in the soils rendering them unsuitable for agriculture. A few recent studies have reported that 85–95% of total As in rice and a vegetable was inorganic, which outlines the need for more studies for standardization. Arsenic concentration is higher in Bangladeshi soils,...
