What is the right age for kids to start to grow up? Kids should enjoy being young and carefree. They should be able to know what’s right for their age and what’s not. Many kids today are not enjoying their time being kids. They are taking on responsibilities that they shouldn’t at their age. The Internet, influences, and trends are making these kids grow up way too fast. To begin with, the Internet has a big effect on the kids now days which cause them to grow up too early. In an article Kids ARE growing up faster today - and it's all down to technology: Facebook and mobile phones causing children to mature more quickly, poll reveals stated that, “70 per cent of their children, aged 12 or under, now search the web unsupervised.” Parents …show more content…
There are so much peer pressure that effects kids. In the website Dr. Gail Gross states that, “We have become a culture of super everything, including “super kids”, pressuring children into pre-mature adults and making them overly competitive.” The “super kids” are pressuring kids to grow up by telling them or showing them the bad things that the “super kids” do. Some of these things are sneaking out of the house, going to parties, and drinking. Not only the influences at school but also the ones at home. In the same article Dr. Gail Gross claims that “children feel rejected because of being left with others.” Parents have many responsibilities; however, they something pay more attention to one- their job. They don’t pay much attention to their kids who they leave with other people to take care of them. Kids feel like their parents don’t care about them. In the book The Hurried Child: Growing Up Too Fast, Too Soon by David Elkind stated that “Children are under tremendous pressure to ‘be mature’ and to ‘grow up’ when they have not had the chance to develop emotional maturity.” Kids are not enjoying being kids because they have friends who are making grown up decisions which makes them want to be mature. Being mature is not only physically but also mentally and some of the kids are not mentally mature just

...board of the L.A. Unified School District made drastic changes the school lunch menu without consulting the kids first, and how the students did not like the changes at all. The new menu had fruits and vegetables making up at least half of the servings on every students plate. This new menu was widely rejected by students and a black market of junk food was even created by certain students. This article supports the idea that by including children in implementing changes in diet and menu, those changes may be more successful. It also points out that by slowly introducing kids to healthy alternatives and informing them about why a change to a healthier diet of fruits an vegetables is important to having a higher quality of life as they get older. This idea supports the second part of my research paper where I discuss the importance of children becoming interested in growing vegetables is an important part of changing the eating habits of American families. Thus, reducing the levels of obesity and type II diabetes in America. Bittman, M. (2011, September 24). Is junk food really cheaper?. Using a fast food meal’s cost for a family of four and the cost of a home cooked roasted chicken to feed 6 people, proving...

...the second most preventable death in the U.S. Up to one out of every five children in the U. S. is overweight or obese, and this number is continuing to rise. Childhood obesity has greatly increased and they are three main things that have caused this, they are the increase of fast food, increase of technology, and change of family habits. These three things are the main reason why childhood obesity has been increasing so much in America, and it is becoming a very dangerous problem. Fast food has become a huge part of America in the last 30 years. Families lives have became very busy and fast food is a very easy way for parents to feed their children when they don’t have time to cook a meal. What parents don’t realize is how bad fast food is for people and how horrible it is to eat on a daily basis. Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child per year and increases the risk of obesity.( www.cbsnews.com/2100-204_162-591325.html) Fast food is made with tons of preservatives and things like high fructose corn syrup. When anyone especially children eat this on a daily basis the food will start to do horrible things to the body and mainly it makes the person add weight at a fast rate. Fast food restaurants make their places very children friendly with play places and happy meals with toys. Doing this attracts families to go there so their kids can play and have a good...

Childhood Obesity

...Childhood Obesity SOSC 102 Professor November 7, 2014 Childhood Obesity Childhood obesity is a major, growing health issue in the United States. It is a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child’s health or well-being. Children become overweight for a number of reasons. Some of the causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, eating unhealthy, medical illness, family and peer problems. Healthy eating and active living are major factors that can eliminate childhood obesity, or merely reduce the growing numbers that obviously exist in society today. “Over the past three decades, since the 1970s, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6 to 11 years.” Ogden et al (as cited in Koplan, 2005, p. 22). Obese children in those age groups may suffer a lot of emotional or psychological stress. They can feel depressed and unhappy because of constant teasing from peers about being overweight. This could cause them to have low self-esteem and might hinder their ability to socialize with others effectively. Other negative effects, are that they develop behavioral problems, which in turn often negatively affects their academic growth. Active Generations is a promising obesity prevention program with emphasis on nutrition education. Students who participate in this program increase their understanding of the connection...

...did not have nearly as much as we have today. Though, I am not that old, technology has moved at such a fast pace that most things that I thought were normal are no longer. We were still coloring with crayons and did math with a piece of paper, a pencil and if we were lucky, we had an adding machine. So much has changed over a short period of time that it is sometimes scary to think. An adding machine has now become such a sophisticated calculator that has computations that one could never figure in a short amount of time with a pencil and paper. When I just sit back and think what we did back when I was a child, as compared to the children right now, I am amazed. Another observation that I have made, is that I can drive down the road and see many people in their cars on their phones either talking or texting, whether they are drivers or passengers. I am just as guilty as well. I rely on technology more than what I should allow myself. I know my limits and boundaries, whereas others do not. If you were to purchase a new automobile, it will be enhanced with technology that allows you to punch a button on the steering wheel to talk on the phone as long as you have the “Bluetooth” button engaged on your cellular devise. When I was in elementary school, I did not have a cell phone, and my mom did not even know what texting was. My mother actually had to pick up the phone on the kitchen wall and call the school to leave a message with the secretary. I would receive...

Childhood Obesity

...Childhood Obesity Shakia Bennett ENG 122: English Composition II Marsh Bechwith-Howard April 15, 2012 Childhood Obesity: Whose Fault is it? The Ashford library, ebooks, and newspaper articles are where the sources on childhood obesity came from. When doing research on childhood obesity, nutrition and parenting were some of the main reoccurring topics of childhood obesity. This paper will focus on unhealthy and healthy eating habits of obese children, and the effects of parenting towards childhood obesity as well as ways to overcome childhood obesity. In the United States there has been a rise in childhood obesity, but whose fault is it? Some parents blame fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, saying their food is unhealthy and the portions are too big. However, on the first part the blame for childhood obesity should be on the parents. Although fast food restaurants do paly a small part in childhood obesity, it is up to the parents to determine what they allow their children to eat. Parents should stop blaming fast food restaurants for childhood obesity when healthy eating habits should be enforced at home. Childhood obesity is a rising serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. Approximately 15 percent of U.S. children, ages 6–11, and 16 percent of U.S. adolescents, ages 12–19, are obese (Encyclopedia of Special Education, 2006). Childhood obesity occurs when a child is above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Obesity appears...

Junk Food Affects You

...a basketball game. Everyone’s got a smile on their face and they’re full of so much energy. He’d love to be chosen to play on someone’s basketball team, invited to play tag, or having fun doing anything else other than sitting by himself in the grass. Instead, he gets picked on by other kids about being overweight and is always tired after a short time of going up and down the stairs of the jungle gym. Like many kids his age, junk food, candy, sweets, and fast food become a way of life and a quick and easy dinner picked up in the drive thru is much easier than taking time and effort to make a healthy one at home. Josh’s mom gets fast food for dinner 4-5 times a week, which is the average for Americans today (Americans eat out about 5 times a week, 2011). She works a full-time job and has to pick up Josh’s little sister from daycare after getting Josh from school. It’s hard for her to plan and prepare a wholesome dinner after a long day at work. This is not an uncommon scenario for many adults and kids alike in the U.S. and around the world today. Fast food and junk food have become the norm to the everyday diet. There are more and more restaurant chains popping up around the world which contributes to the rising global obesity rate and ensures a shorter lifespan if junk food becomes part of someone’s regular diet. The purpose of this proposal of cutting down on, or banning junk food completely, is to get people to see the actual harm...

Racism

...Before beginning to write this paper I took the advice given in class and decided to do a little research of my own as to what other countries saw as American culture. My discoveries were shocking. One quote specifically said,”All Americans care about are fancy cars, big houses, expensive things, and impressing the next person...” However, the more I sat back and thought about American culture and how it had influenced me and the ones around me, sadly I realized that this statement was not so far off from the truth. I grew up a biracial child adopted by a white family. My father owns an oil and gas company and my mother, well she does what every other housewife/stay at home mom in the ritzy subdivision I was raised in...nothing. Now I love my mom and looking back on my childhood I would not have wanted it any other way, she was there waiting for me every day when I came home and the time we spent together was amazing. To be completely honest though I have probably worked more hours in my short 19 year old life than she ever has. I guess you could say my family is living the “American Dream”. On both sides of my family the emphasis on money and materialistic things was huge. They are all wonderful people but lets face it we all know that Uncle Bubba showed up so fashionably late on Christmas Eve just to be sure that we all got a real good look at his sparkling new Mercedes Benz CLS and wanted us all to rest assured that yes, it was fully loaded. Growing up I was always a bit embarrassed...

The Lack of Early Childhood Education in Minority Neighborhoods

...The Lack of Early Childhood Education in Minority Neighborhoods Gildon R Turner AIU Online Abstract This country prides itself in being a better place for people to come and work better and to get a better education. We are falling far too short on both counts more so with education. We are still not separated and equal. This paper will talk to you about the differences in the minority neighborhoods and why our government should be taking a closer look at the lack of early childhood education and how this education is an investment into our future. The Lack of Early Childhood Education in Minority Neighborhoods Early childhood education is an investment in our future. Haycock, K (2011) stated that, “In minority neighborhoods there are less early childhood educational facilities and if they exist low-income and minority students are less likely than their white and more affluent peers to have the teachers with the proper academic background to teach the subject matter they are teaching”. Due to the shape of the economy at the present time, it is even harder for minority children to receive this type of education. Most are one parent families and are not making the money it would cost to send their children to a good head start program. “So when black and Latino twelfth-graders perform at about the same level as white eight graders, it is not just a “minority” problem; it’s a national problem...

Digital Media

...Digital Media and Technology Professor November 28, 2013 Education in Digitalization Our group decided to do our paper on the topic of Education in the Digital age which was our first project of the year. Education has changed so much over the years and it has done that very fast. From having textbooks and covering them to now classes having I pad’s in them and almost diminishing textbooks from school. As technology advances everyday, we can only imagine how our education will be in schools in even just 5 years. Research, studying, student testing, disabled education, hybrid classes and the changing roles of teachers in today's digital age are some of the main topics I will be talking about. Textbooks are not only very important for a students education but also puts a hole in their wallet. On average a student spends roughly $1,200 a year on textbooks whether you are renting them or buying them. That is a staggering number for a book that sometimes doesn't even help you too much in class. A single sheet of paper to make costs just 5 cents, but that adds up with how many pages are in a book overall. Some of the jobs that textbooks make were more than I expected. You can have jobs such as authors, illustrators, publishers, editors, lumbar people, paper mill workers and shippers. The authors are the people who write the text in the book, the illustrators can print in the pictures into the book, the editors look for any misspelling or misprint that the author...

Cultural Lag

...DATE \@ "MMMM d, y" August 31, 2015 Cultural Lag An example of cultural lag is in terms of Educational tools and lessons. As the advancement of technology continually grows, some lessons taught in class seem inapplicable towards teenagers and younger kids nowadays. “Why was I being taught how to use a typewriter instead of a word processor? Why was I learning shorthand when we have tape recorders?” (“What Will a 21st Century Education Look Like?”, 2012). Students as of today always ask themselves why they have to learn how to plot points on a graph, when they can use an online graphing calculator when they’re out of school. Students right now question why they have to study certain long-established or traditional subjects or lessons, when they find no use for it in the future due to the technological advancements of today. “Throughout my own education I saw a rapidly changing world that wasn’t matching up to the textbook-driven, passive learning of facts I was being exposed to in my classrooms. Fast forward to today and the rapid changes I witnessed back in the late 80s and early 90s are nothing compared to what I’ve seen in the last ten years. The fact we can look up anything at anytime on our smartphones is itself a game changer in education.” (“What Will a 21st Century Education Look Like?”, 2012) We are starting to see the gap and relationship between our traditional textbooks and technological advancements. Of course, when the authors of our textbooks first published...

Teens and Dieting

...Research Paper Final Draft Megan Vandermark English 135 Professor Skeen 23 February, 2012 Teens and Dieting As a model, Nina was dying to be thin. She lived off of her looks: “That was a lifestyle for me. Just like an athlete trains for a goal, it’s the same thing with my weight.” Her goal was to be the thinnest African-American model at 5’10’ and 100 pounds. As her weight dropped, she began to book more jobs. To make the weight drop faster, Nina turned to diet pills to help her lose the last 15 pounds. Nina said “When I took the pills, it was a euphoric feeling. Your body is in constant motion. There’s no slowing down, no desire to eat. It’s like being intoxicated and you can get used to that feeling if you’re taking the pills on a daily basis.” The euphoric feeling masked the problems that were going on in Nina’s body. At the age of 29, Nina had a heart attack, “It felt like an arm was punching through my chest.” But even a heart attack wasn’t enough to bring her destructive behavior to a complete stop. “It still took some time for the full wake-up to come,” Nina said (Ray, 2007). Stories such as this one should not happen, and we have the power to stop it from happening, so that no one should have to go through such a life changing experience. If Nina and other teens had known the risks of extreme dieting practices prior to using them, maybe there would not be so many incidents today. Teens have easy access to dieting methods and don't understand the risks of abusing them;...

Childhood Obesity

...topic in America today and childhood obesity and the ethical arguments over obesity has greatly increased over the last 10 years. Health problems that occur from this deadly disease is something that no one wants to talk about. When people think about health, what usually is discussed is cancer or heart disease. Not many people really think about one of the biggest issues out there that is really not taken very seriously and that is obesity. In America there are hundreds of thousands of children that are overweight. Obesity is a disease, a disease associated with many other health issues, including congestive heart problems, diabetes among other physical and mental complications associated with this disease. We will discuss throughout this paper how one of the classical theories would help resolve the problems that are associated with the dangers of childhood obesity, then discuss the perspective of society and how it relates to relativism in today's world. There are many arguments about how childhood obesity starts, who's to blame for allowing this to happen and societies ethical and moral obligation associated with fixing the problem. Who or what is to blame for the increasing levels of childhood obesity? Some believe it is the parents themselves; others accuse the food industry and government. One fact cannot go unchallenged and that is the longer this disease is allowed to grow and is not brought under CHILDHOOD OBESITY 3 control, the higher the percentage...

Effects of Divorce on Children

...Psychology Liberty University Abstract This research paper will attempt to shed light of the very real issue of the effects of divorce on children in the United States and abroad. It is estimated that currently fifty-three percent of all marriages in the United States end in divorce or other less than amicable methods; of these marriage dissolutions, seven out of ten involve children. This paper will attempt to connect the negative psychological impacts that are attached to the lives of children especially in the vulnerable early developmental stages of a child’s life. This research paper will pull from many different reputable sources that include a prominent university, psychiatric journals, and accredited psychology research papers. Today in the United States of America over fifty percent of all marriages, no matter what religion joined the couple, end in a divorce or less than amicable circumstances. There have been many theories presented over time as to why divorce occurs and why these rates have increased so dramatically over the last forty years. Some believe that the economy may play a role; others believe that the length of the engagement or relationship plays an important part; the couple living together prior to marriage “increases” the chance that divorce will result; or not cohabitating prior to marriage may contribute as the transition period is too stressful; still others believe that the divorce process is too easy; if laws were stricter and divorces were...

Raising Well-Rounded Children

...not realized, years ago. It seems that children are not allowed to be children very long. Society today accelerates the growing process; and our children are suffering the consequences of dealing with adult issues far too early in life. It also seems that some parents are not aware that while allowing the child to live as an adult, experiencing adult things rob them of their natural childhood development. There are many reasons why our children are growing up so fast, but in most cases the parents must take the blame. Maybe they are using the example by which they were raised; maybe they feel that they should just be friends with their children, or maybe they are too young themselves and don’t know how to raise children. Whatever the reason, the children are the ones suffering. We have a God given privilege to raise our children and it comes with responsibility. God expresses in Proverbs 22:6 “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” (NLT). The responsibility of a parent is to properly direct their children in a lifestyle that will lead them to mature adulthood. And if the raising of your children is proper and productive, they will retain the principles in their later years. There are several areas that must be addressed when our goal is “Raising Well-Rounded Children”. Those areas will be address in this paper. Although this information is not exhaustive, it is beneficial. SHARING YOUR FAITH A knowledgeable bible scholar once...
