Herbert Simon once said, “There are no morals about technology at all. Technology expands our ways of thinking about things, expands our ways of doing things. If we’re bad people we use technology for bad purposes and if we’re good people we use it for good purposes.” This statement is exceptionally true. It brings up an important factor, which is that the technology and the internet are literally what a person makes it to be. When you use technology it should be with the common knowledge that once you put personal information, images, and videos online it is no longer yours. In the case of Kiki Kannibal, Kiki exposed herself sexually on the internet, with the knowledge that people would see and react to her pictures. She knew, whether it be consciously or subconsciously, that by posting racy pictures and videos online that people would see and that’s what she wanted to happen. Now that is not to say that what happened to her was not horrible because it was, and it was also more excessive than the situation called for. But on a level of understanding on both sides, she was looking for attention, and she sought it out in an extremely superficial way. She formed relationships with her viewers by exposing her body and forming a one-way sexual relationship. She misused the internet and that resulted in her and her family’s lives being ruined and future being tarnished. In Rachael Kadish’s article she talks about a “dehumanizing factor” when it comes to the internet, Kiki Kannibal and her story are a prime example of this factor. People watched her videos and pictures not realizing that she is a real person, they do not think that she could be their sister, mother, or cousin. They see her as a computerized person which lowers her in their eyes, offering her no respect whatsoever.
