However, not every human being is capable of self-determination. The capacity for self-determination matures during an individual's life, and some individuals lose this capacity wholly or in part because of illness, mental disability, or circumstances that severely restrict liberty. Respect for the immature and the incapacitated may require protecting them as they mature or while they are incapacitated.
Some persons are in need of extensive protection, even to the point of excluding them from activities which may harm them; other persons require little protection beyond making sure they undertake activities freely and with awareness of possible adverse consequence. The extent of protection afforded should depend upon the risk of harm and the likelihood of benefit. The judgment that any individual lacks autonomy should be periodically reevaluated and will vary in different situations.
In most cases of research involving human subjects, respect for persons demands that subjects enter into the research voluntarily and with adequate information. In some situations, however, application of the principle is not obvious. The involvement of prisoners as subjects of research provides an instructive example. On the one hand, it would seem that the principle of respect for persons requires that prisoners not be deprived of the opportunity to volunteer for research. On the other hand, under prison conditions they may be subtly coerced or unduly influenced to engage in research activities for which they would not otherwise volunteer. Respect for persons would then dictate that prisoners be protected. Whether to allow prisoners to "volunteer" or to "protect" them presents a dilemma. Respecting persons, in most hard cases, is often a matter of balancing competing claims urged by the principle of respect itself.

Beyond Objectification

...role in King Kong One of the most intriguing aspects of King Kong is the power of her visual effects. The multiple exposures, processed "shots" and a variety of angles of camera aim to provide viewers of 1930’s an escape from the severe economic depression before World War II. However, in King Kong the representation of the female role as an object of pleasure is somewhat disappointing for our society nowadays. In the entire film, we are not provided by strong traits of Ann Darrow’s personality other than her helplessness and common gender stereotypes. It seemed that Ann Darrow didn’t have anything else to offer other than being the endangered beauty of the film. King Kong objectifies and enhance one aspect of Ann Darrow in the entire movie: her physical beauty, apparently her only role is to be the object of desire or wealth for Kong of the principal male roles in the film. My goal in this paper is to show that situation and her complexity, how that portrayal of Ann Darrow’s character determines the continuity of the movie and her genre. Clearly Merian C. Cooper y Ernest B. Schoedsackare portray Ann’s character in order to don’t deviate and enhance the overall concept of an adventure film and produces greater meaning to the final quote: "The beauty killed the beast" and the evidence brought in this paper helps to support my belief. In the scene when Carl Denham is discussing with the agent, he clearly states to the audience the motif of having Ann Darrow in King Kong and not...

How Technology Affects Our Everyday Lives

...knowledge. Technology is going to continue to evolve and reinvent itself everyday. We are constantly connected with our iPhones, laptops, Facebook and Twitter. We all can’t imagine living life without our cell phones and social media, but a few short decades ago the thought of being connected all the time was looked down upon and who really cared about what I was up to last weekend? With the constant reformation of technology, we are constantly adapting and adopting these, once crazy, inventions into our every day lives. If we look at entertainment and cinema over the last 80 some-od years we can see the vast improvements in the quality and reality of the scenes and its all thanks to advancements in technology. Just take the original King Kong from the 1930’s and the remake of the same movie in 2005. Even though a giant gorilla is roaming the streets, the remake is more lifelike and the scenes are more believable. Then adding the advancement of 3D technology brought movies and TV to a whole new level with movies like Avitar. The advancement in technology is even in everyday medicine. Because of technology we can more accurately diagnose and treat certain forms of cancer and more easily narrow down diseases while improving a persons health with tailored forms of drugs and treatments. Now they can grow new cells for your heart, personalize your drugs and send a nurse to your house virtually. The healthcare industry has seen one the greatest benefits of technology because of...

Godzilla History

...As time travels forward the image of Godzilla advances as technology becomes enhanced and the original puppet version from 1954’s becomes a third dimensional model of a T-Rex like monster which is crossed with a stegosaurus which is known as the dinosaur with plates on the back with a spiky tail. This creature has evolved from physical material to virtual material which gives him more of a Sci-Fi base due to the extra features which can be generated. The evolution of sound, editing technique and camera angle also was used in the film but was improved to a new level thanks to the newer technology that was developed. The scene that gave a great aspect of sound and camera angles was the part when Godzilla rose up from the sea side of the city of New York. This was when the civilians just noticed that a monstrous creature named Godzilla existed. The sound of the music that covered the back ground as the plated monster rose from the water with its back plates emerging from the side of the bay was an sinister sound which started slow and quiet and soon became louder and faster. Straight after the sound of the monster screeching happens as we go to the view first person view from a random civilian seeing this creature step on the road as it moves towards the city of New York. Boats which were in the harbour get stuck on Godzilla’s back plates and starts to falls as it steps deeper into the city. Cars start crashing into the fallen boats which gives out a crash sound. This is possible...

Hk, What a Place?

...Hong Kong[note 3] (Chinese: 香港) is one of two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the other being Macau. A city-state[9] situated on China's south coast and enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea,[10] it is renowned for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbour. With a land mass of 1,104 km2 (426 sq mi) and a population of seven million people, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.[11] Hong Kong's population is 95 percent ethnic Chinese and 5 percent from other groups.[12] Hong Kong's Han Chinese majority originate mainly from the cities of Guangzhou and Taishan in the neighbouring Guangdong province.[13] Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1839–42). Originally confined to Hong Kong Island, the colony's boundaries were extended in stages to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and then the New Territories in 1898. It was occupied by Japan during the Pacific War, after which the British resumed control until 1997, when China resumed sovereignty.[14][15] The region espoused minimum government intervention under the ethos of positive non-interventionism during the colonial era.[16] The time period greatly influenced the current culture of Hong Kong, often described as "East meets West",[17] and the educational system, which used to loosely follow the system in England[18] until reforms implemented in 2009.[19] Under the principle of "one country, two systems"...

Ethnocentrism and Self-Reference Criterion

...million than the expectations. Expensiveness, Olympics in Barcelona and various customs of French were not taken into consideration. French government quotas on non-French movies. Ignoring cultural aspects of French are the factors of Euro Disney’s poor performance in the first year. Chinese people lack of knowledge of Disney characters. Size of the park. Not exciting or similar to Chinese amusements parks are the factors for the Disney venture’s loss in Hong Kong. Q2. These factors are foreseeable and controllable. The proper market research could avoid many of the factors. When exploring international markets the cultural aspects must be considered. For example French have their own cartoon characters, promoting them along with the existing Disney mark characters could bring the locals close to the project. Economic situation of the marketing segment should have been taken into consideration to avoid the migration of customers. There should be something exciting in such parks to draw the customers in a new launch. In Hong Kong this is the first mistake which is not addressed. Ignoring self-reference criterion and Ethnocentrism is what seems to me is the major fault. This can be rectified; it is evident from the Paris Disney improvement. Q3. Ethnocentrism is the main issue in Euro Disney development. The above factors depict the lack of knowledge on French culture. Assumptions on the Euro Disney proved wrong. I don’t understand how a company of this stature could ignore this. The...

Therefore, one reason was found as the ultimate source to explain why a fashion style/ trend was spread to the mass market. However, the existing market is complex and difficult to find out the holistic reason to explain fashion consumption. In this study, the chaotic perspective is taken into account to investigate the relationship between fashion change and fashion consumption. By using the grounded theory method, 33 in-depth interviews were conducted. A chaotic fashion consumption model is developed from the findings to explain how different fashions are consumed and rejected while fashion changes. It is found that the interaction of being fashionable, perceived fashionability and system participation affects the ultimate decision on fashion consumption. It is also found that a pattern can be traced to forecast the degree of fashion consumption even when...

King Jewels: Leadership in Practice

...Assignment # 4 King Jewels Ethical Leadership in Practice By: Mark A. Cowan ACC 499 Strayer University Senior Capstone-Accounting Dr. Monica Pendergrass Abstract The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Hong Kong company of KingJewels. Their ethical leadership in practice will be discussed at length. The author will attempt to discuss the leadership style and how it contributed to unethical behavior, proper segregation of duties may have prevented the fraud, the company’s compensation program that probably contributed to the fraud, how culture may have influenced the behavior towards revealing the fraud, and recommendations of how Mai Won should proceed. To understand the company KingJewels, let us discuss a little history of the company and its owner, Andy Wong. Mr. Wong started in the jewelry business from the bottom as an apprentice and worked his way to the top as sales and sourcing manager of an international jewelry before starting his own business. “He recognized that his company had the potential to expand and internationalize its business further by focusing on jewelry design and technology, and on overseas markets. KingJewels specialized in sourcing, trading, and manufacturing precious gemstones. It prided itself on its fashionable and affordable jewelry products. While Wong had successfully turned KingJewels into a highly competitive business, he left KingJewels internal management to Clement Tam, operations manager”. (Capstone p...

Compare and Contrast Hk and the Usa

...The United States V.S. Hong Kong              When you travel to another country, you can definitely realize there are lots of conspicuous differences between the country and yours. I have been studying in the States for some time. At the outset, I found it hard to adapt to the new environment since there are significant differences between the States and the place where I was brought up—Hong Kong, especially in several major areas of food culture, environment, and lifestyle.              One big difference between the States and Hong Kong is food culture. “Pizzas, burgers and French Fries are our regular meals!” one American student told me. I do agree with her, for I have seen pizzas, burgers and French fries appear in the school cafeteria every day since I arrived. Moreover, McDonald’s, Burger King and Papa Gino’s, which sell fast food, dominate in the States. If you stay in the States for a while, you’ll definitely familiarize yourself with various types of pizzas and burgers: Pepperoni Pizza—pizza dough topped with tomato sauce mixture, cheese and pepperoni; Hawaiian Pizza—combines sweet with sour; Double Cheese Burger—consists of beef patties, melted cheese and mustard. However, for the Chinese, steamed rice, cooked or fried vegetables and fish are main meals in Hong Kong. Apart from that, food in the United States only satisfies hunger. In contrast, food in Hong Kong “is also an expression of cultural identity and the choice or rejection of certain types of food, the...

Film Review

...in film. The Hero is a Chinese film based in Hong Kong China, and it is entirely a wuxia film. It is a martial art film, and it depicts the Chinese culture and unity. The king in the film is trying to bring together warring kingdoms and also come up with a standard Chinese language among the variations. There is a conflict depicted in the film that of who to trust. The king is almost lured to believe an assassin who finally forgives the king. There is an excellent use of flashbacks in the film hence making it a narration film as most of the stories narrated, and flashback is used. Most of the fights shown in flashbacks where nameless and the king of Qin are conversing at the palace. Hero is filming that entirely depicts the ancient Chinese culture and uses visual designs in a relevant way. The film uses the fascist aesthetics that represents authoritarianism. The film represents the Chinese culture in a number of ways. It does not concentrate on the multiculturalism as other Chinese films could do. First, the movie shows the Chinese culture in the form of leadership. At the beginning of the film, the narrator tells of ancient China being a kingdom ruled by kings, and initially it was made up of seven kingdoms. The film also shows the ancient Chinese leadership to have had many wars. It was during this wars that the parents of nameless (jet li) were killed making him come for revenge in the palace. The evidence is when the king asks nameless why he had the plot to kill him. It...

...CASE 8: MCDONALD PHILIPPINES THE JOURNEY OF GEORGE YANG Known as the McDonaldman of the Philippines, George Yang (Gyang) started his journey after graduation from Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania in 1964. Back in Manila, he settled in to start a family and began a two-year juggling act of working as a marketing manager of a tobacco company (Bataan Cigarettes), consulting for a manufacturing company, and selling a variety of things on the side. These included insurance, nicotine guards (TAR-OFF), imported cosmetics, and lecturing Financial Management and Marketing subjects at his alma mater, De La Salle University. Kristin was very supportive of George. She acted as sales manager of the Tar-Off that George invented, even when walking down streets to offer the filters on consignment. At the prodding of Don Amado Araneta, Kristin started a nameless counter in supermarkets offering jewelries to young working mothers, which later evolved into a more sophisticated brand, Kristin Jewelry, which carried fine jewelry for upscale clients. George worked behind the scene, understanding market behavior, monitoring fluctuations in the price of gold in the global markets, and running the factory of 50 workers. Gyang, inspired by the success of the jewelry business, thought of something on a larger scale. He had been reading reports on a growing American fast-food chain called McDonald’s, which was being extolled in business reviews in many other countries. He wrote...

Canton Pop

...Canton pop music is very popular in Hong Kong, especially from the 1970s to 1990s. In 1970s, there was a rise of television industry, TV theme songs were very popular. For 1980s, it is a golden age of canton pop music, followed by 1990s’ 4 Heavenly Kings era. However, people think that nowadays canton pop gradually cannot reflect Hong Kong culture as they all are very similar in terms of themes. Nevertheless, I can still recognize some canton pops can reflect Hong Kong culture. Today I would like to introduce one to you. It is called “I love cha chann teng” sang by Kay Tse. “I love cha chann teng” reflected how people in Hong Kong viewed cha chann teng. The lyrics explains why cha chann teng is popular among Hong Kongers. It points out that cha chann teng offer a variety of food in reasonable price and meet Hong Kongers’ demand for convenience and flexibility. Besides, there is usually a cha chann teng within a walking distance. The above all give listeners a sense of resonance. In this song, polyphonic texture is used as there is more than one melody at a time and they are competing with each other. The melody is mainly played by electric bass guitar and drum set and sung by vocalist, Kay Tse. Drum set is used in order to keep the beat and rhythm and present this song vividly. By doing so, listener can feel the fast paced living style in Hong Kong. The form of this song is simple, AA’BA’B’B’’B’’’, which B part, as the chorus, is repeated for 4 times throughout the song...
