...A STUDY ON THE KINGDOM OF GOD A PROJECT SUBMITTED TO DR. JOEL AJAYI IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE OBST 592 OLD TESTAMENT ORIENTATION II BY JAMES D. PERKINS Student ID: 3437129 jdperkins3@liberty.edu LOUISVILLE, KY 5 OCTOBER, 2012 08 Fall 08 Fall Introduction The angel Gabriel visited the Virgin Mary and heralded one of the most debated and controversial eschatological statements in all of Scripture. "With breathtaking brevity, in one vast, glorious, revelation Gabriel succinctly summarized the entire ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ". There was nothing theologically new in the angel's announcement for much of it had been the subject of the Old Testament prophets, yet there is little agreement among scholars regarding its fulfillment. Gabriel, having come from the presence and glory of God (Luke 1:19), no doubt relayed the words of God in precise detail: "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end" (Luke 1:30-33 ESV). These words would have rung with Messianic overtones to any Jewish person living at that time, and Mary probably understood this to mean the inauguration of the anticipated Jewish...

...The Kingdom of God is Like… In this essay I have chosen two different metaphors, the first one from Tame’s article in the reading, and one from my personal experience, for the Messiah and the Kingdom of God. I will try to elaborate on the characteristics of the Messianic kingdom of God as Jesus taught and modeled it. Great focus has been put on the specific teachings about the kingdom in the assigned readings for this period. My essay will show my understanding of Jesus teaching of the Kingdom of God and His role as the Messiah. As Jesus taught he often spoke in parables. “A parable is an extended metaphor, a simple story based on everyday kinds of events. These comparisons could be easily understood by those who heard them because they fit into the experience of the common folk of Judea and Galilee (Niswonger, p. 147).” The people of this era understood the parables because it was fitting for that time period. The Messiah was using metaphors and parables to give them a greater understanding of what the Kingdom of God was and what the Kingdom of God stood for. The parables and metaphors made God message clearer and direct so that the disciples would have clarity as to what he spoke. The parables were used to hide God mystery from the unbelievers and skeptics who doubted Him. The Messiah only gave the “secret of the Kingdom of God” to his disciples, and everyone else he spoke in parables to them because he wanted them to always be hunger and thirsty for the word of God...

No: 11-0005240 Course Type: Pastoral leadership Textbook Summary (Verbatim/Seminar Summary/Textbook Summary/Ministry Project/Dissertation) Course Title: The Kingdom Focused Church Course Number: MEC570 Date Submitted: 04/1/13 The kingdom of God is the reign of God in today’s world. This is the truth that Jesus Christ rules over all things and the evidence by God’s super-natural work in the believer and through believers in local churches. When churches focus on the kingdom of God they will and can flourish. Chapter 1: In search of the perfect church. Many may have a vision of the perfect church, but the perfect churches share a number of characteristics. Some are filled with people on fire for Christ who put selfishness, politics, and personal agendas aside for the glory of God and His purpose. They treat their pastors with respect and pay them fairly. They give generously, evangelize tirelessly, and teach truthfully. They are a joy and blessing to every member and visitor, and they serve the communities faithfully. One more thing the perfect churches have in common they do not exist. Every church is imperfect because it is made up of imperfect people, and they will produce imperfect result. Paul reminded the Ephesians that the church was the bride of Christ, and they needed...

...teachings of jesus regarding the kingdom of god to be consistent with his background? The proclamation of the kingdom is a major feature of the teaching of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels, e.g. Mark 1 : 15, as against the epistles, where Jesus and his return are preached. But is this an already present or future kingdom? What does it mean to say that the Kingdom of God is ‘at hand’? Many scholars, particularly CH Dodd, would argue that in Jesus’ teaching he is showing us that the Kingdom of God has already arrived with no future crisis. This interpretation is called realised or present eschatology. It can be argued that through the gospels Jesus is shown to fulfil (OT)prophecies relating to the coming of the Kingdom of God. “the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raise and the poor have good news brought to them.” (Matt. 11 : 5) Here Jesus appears to make a direct reference back to Isaiah 35 which looks forward to the Kingdom of God when “the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; the lame shall leap like deer and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy” (vs5-6). It can be seen from this that the Kingdom of God had arrived; Jesus appeared to be saying that these were si gns that the prophecies had been fulfilled and the kingdom was present. The parables, a central source of eschatological teaching, also can interpreted by such scholars to show that the Kingdom had arrived. Many, such as the...

...Hidden Treasure (Kingdom of Heaven) and The Parable of the Ten Virgins The parable of the Hidden Treasure uses simile to convey how the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. First, the kingdom of heaven is very valuable like treasure. It is by the grace of God that people can go to heaven or know what to do to go to heaven. Secondly, the kingdom of heaven can be said to be hidden in a field because not every one can find it and some people do not even know about it. Whoever finds it should be joyful because it is God's mercy that allows them to see it. However, unlike the man who found it and hid it again, we should share the kingdom, or in other words, the gospel. Finding the kingdom of heaven is finding salvation...

... Every person longs for recognition. It is the yearning of the ego to seek love. We feel good upon receiving praise from our superior. We float with pride when we are rated on top of others. Giving honor and reward to those who have accomplished great things is a good way of valuing. Rightly done, it affirms their being created in the image of God. On the other hand, we must be careful of the way the world gives recognition. The criterion it sets to receive award tends to discriminate and devalue those who have no superior talents and winning personalities. Small people with limited capacity and resources are in a disadvantage position. The standard for becoming great is tilted to those who are endowed with opportunity to succeed according to worldly agenda. Little people compete against the odds in a world that measures success in terms of bigness and becoming number one. Status-seeking feeds the human nature’s quest for ego tripping. It works for show. It entertains people who are awed and dazzled by what they see. Being cheered and hailed by the adoring crowd awakens the hidden desire to feel like a god. It is a dangerous game that precedes downfall (Lk 14:11). Jesus values the greatness of people differently. Often times, it is not what they can show off but what is hidden in the heart that Jesus recognizes. The rich who put large gifts out of their riches never impressed Jesus. The one he admired is a poor widow who could only afford “two very...

...Kingdom of God Dr. Pat Francis Dustin William Hall September 8th 2011 Introduction In a kingdom there are kings and queens, princes and princess's and all kinds of other royalty figures. To the common person access to the royal people and the royal property is not allowed. To capture and take hold that we we're born with royalty in our spiritual bloodline and that the God that sent HIS only begotten son not only wanted us to receive the free gift of salvation but wanted us in his royal family is astonishing. God not only wants us to be blessed but he wants us to accept the benefits of being in the royal family. Kingdom of God I have the ability to be so attractive. The kingdom of God is something that when placed inside of our hearts makes us attractive to those around us. We posses the solutions to the modern day questions. We walk with something that all mankind will react too because God created all in HIS image and are allow subject to HIS creativity entity. With the kingdom of God reigning in our hearts we allow the invisible kingdom to take reign and allow an everlasting kingdom to begin to open up opportunities for us. Opportunities like establishing that which was rightfully the LORDS back to HIM. The world has established it's kingdom and is in pursuit of capturing the sons and daughters of light. When we realize that we have the kingdom of God within us, we can begin to take authority over the kingdoms that threaten God's. The phrase...

...to the supernatural dimension (Coleman, 2006). The significance of the sacred texts of Christianity is necessarily their ability to timelessly connect the adherent to the divinity of Christ, through which enduring life questions are answered allowing their contents to be expressed and lived differently (Our Lady of Mercy College, 2014). The Bible is given fundamental centrality in Christianity, as the supreme scared text, and it is an essential guide for the Christian adherent to model their life on the ministry of Christ. Christ’s golden commandment, embodied within the verse, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with your soul and with all your mind” and “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:36-40) instruct the adherent to adjust positively in the face of controversy. In fulfilment of the Kingdom of God on earth, with fidelity to the verse, ‘seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness’ (Matthew 6:33), the adherent is able to understand an enduring question of life, ‘what...

...Kingdom Essay Taylor Downey Grand Canyon University: BIB 354 1/29/2015 Kingdom Essay Within scripture and the gospels, Jesus was an incredible teacher and preached the good news of the kingdom of God to those around Him in his ministry. In the Gospels, he is called teacher more than 40 times, which proves that he was truly an influential figure and people hung to every word he spoke. Within his words and teachings, he talks about a variety of topics such as love, forgiveness, and purity. However, the big picture for Jesus as a teacher was speaking truth and pointing people towards the coming of the Kingdom of God. The majority of what he spoke on centered on this idea of kingdom, which showed the many characteristics of the Kingdom. How Jesus Taught The material to which Jesus taught was very impactful, but they way he delivered it and taught was truly unlike any other. Jesus was know for using parables within his lessons because of the audience he dealt with and the resistance he might face. The best way to fight the resistance was to teach in a way that broke through potential hostility within listeners while teaching on dangerous topics (Stein, 1996). The beautiful thing about the way that Jesus taught was before his listeners could resist what he was saying, he already got his point across and it was received because of the parables in which he used. An example of this would be in Luke chapter 13 verse 18 and 19 when he uses the phrase “like a mustard seed” and...

...First the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness and All these things shall be added unto you, All these things: " Needs of Life and Not wants What was spoke in previous verses What is First: Priority: Jesus wants the first moments of everyday. Jesus wants the first day of every week. Jesus wants the first part of every paycheck. He wants to be first. God sought us first. The very act of creation is one of pursuit – He created us so that we could know Him. And through Jesus He has sought to restore us to Himself. He has given us an invitation to come to know Him. Jesus told His disciples to ask, seek, and knock; in doing so they would receive God's good provision (Matthew 7:7). Jesus even prayed for future believers that they would be with Him (John 17:20-26). He promised to continue to make Himself known to us. It is clear that God desires relationship with us. He has given us a taste of who He (Psalm 34:8); and we are invited to continue to seek Him to more deeply understand His goodness. Now everything rises and falls right here. If your priorities are not in order, your life will not be in order. If your priorities are not right, you won't be right. You don't have to pray about what your number one priority in life ought to be. You don't have to think about it. You don't have to discuss it. You don't have to look for it. You just have to do it. Because Jesus has already told us what our first priority ought to be, "seek ye first the kingdom of God." What is Kingdom? A kingdom...

...parallels our context today. God called Jeremiah to nations that embodied a culture which lacked any reverence for God and human life. They had indulged themselves in sinful pleasures that were of the most flagrant disregard for the dignity to which they had been called as the people of God. Even Christians today have lost acknowledgment of God and have erased every trace of their ordination. The obscenities and indecencies of todays culture have permeated into homes through media, airwaves, and every other avenue. We suffer in a great captivity; a captivity not even identified. This captivity has eradicated a value system, moral standards, and a fear of God. This captivity has not only taken a hold of one nation or group of people, but every nation of the world. The critical situation of todays world calls for men and women such as Jeremiah. There has to be a generation that will dare to obey God’s call to “pluck up, break down, destroy, overthrow, build, and plant”. The kingdom of darkness and its principalities must be dismantled and overthrown and the Kingdom of God must be established. Such activity calls for a people who have experienced the vision of God. This vision of God will without doubt bring about a divine disturbance as it did to Jeremiah and the prophets. The Word of God that ‘came’ to them actually ‘occurred’ unto them as an event. Once the Word of God occurs to us, there is an undoing likened unto Isaiah’s experience and an “Ah, Lord God!” statement of mind and...

It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Get thee behind me, Satan; get thee hence: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. What seek ye? Come and see. Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas. Follow me. Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Before that Philip called thee, when thou wart under the fig tree, I saw thee. Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. Fill the waterpots with water. Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. Take these things hence, make not my Father's house a house of merchandise. Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. † Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ...The Wolf of Wall Street: A Sermon on Luke Luke 16: 19-31 depicts Jesus telling a parable directed to those who view themselves as loftier than others. Jesus discusses two men in his story- a man named Lazarus and a rich man. One man leads a comfortable life, while the other struggles through poverty. The parable teaches us the way the men live their lives on earth will affect their lives after death. One man resides with Jesus in the kingdom of God, while the other suffers in Hades. The ultimate message of this parable is that not everyone is rewarded with the kingdom of God, but only those who follow Moses, the prophets, and him. This message is applicable in everyday life and is demonstrated in many modern day situations, such as those that arise in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Jesus’s message not only applies to the rich man and Lazarus, but to every one of us in our daily lives. To put this in perspective for younger minds, I have examined Luke 16: 19-31 in the popular movie The Wolf of Wall Street, a comedy that dramatizes life of a stockbroker who is obsessed with greed and money. In the beginning of the film, the main character, Jordan Belfort, starts a career on Wall Street and loses his job soon after on Black Monday. At this point of the movie, he is unaware of the “rules” of Wall Street, representing a character of humility, innocence, and modesty. He starts from the bottom, digging for jobs and finds one selling low value stock by deceiving his customers...
