• Limping.
• Chest pain.
• Trouble breathing.
DIAGNOSIS
This condition is diagnosed based on your child's symptoms and medical history. Your child's health care provider will also do a physical exam. Your child may also have tests, including:
• Fluid sample tests.
• Blood tests.
• MRI.
• Echocardiography test. This test uses sound waves to take pictures of the inside of the heart.
• Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. This test can identify K. kingae by its genetic makeup, or DNA.
TREATMENT
Treatment for a K. kingae infection varies based on the severity of the infection. Your child may need to stay in a hospital for care and to prevent potential complications. Treatment may also include oral or IV antibiotics.
HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
• If your child was prescribed an antibiotic, give it as told by your child’s health care provider. Do not stop giving the antibiotic even if your child starts to feel better.
• Give over-the-counter and prescription medicines only as told by your child’s health care provider.
• Have your child drink enough fluids to keep his or her urine clear or pale
