Kirby Bauer Method Lab Report

In this experiment we learned how to execute The Kirby-Bauer Method by choosing one of four pathogens, creating a bacteria law on two plates and using disks with antibiotic/drug concentrations to test the pathogens susceptibility. Going into the medical field, it is easy to see how this method is used when trying to determine what type of drug/antibiotic the doctor will use to help kill the pathogen without causing harm to the patient. As stated before this test is used to help physicians choose appropriate antibiotics to treat infection because it is simple to use, very reliable and you can receive results in a short period of time. I would say that is one of the most important parts of the medical field because there are so many antibiotic/drugs out there it would take too much time to find a drug to help a patient that only has a certain amount of time. This method helps narrow the search down finding what the drugs a specific pathogen would be susceptible/ resistant to giving the doctor a clear picture on what to prescribe saving the patient.

It is easy to see when looking and comparing results with my fellow lab mates that the pathogen I did was the most senstive. S.aureus had many large zones of inhibition when measuring and when looking on the chart was sensitive to 7 drugs while the others were only sensitive to 6 or less. I don’t really understand why this is so sensitive because while doing research I learned that Staphylococcus aureus, demonstrates the ability of developing resistance to many antimicrobial agents but it could be that the antibiotic concentration is so strong or that this is a gram positive

...Unknown Bacteria Lab Report #21 In Microbiology Lab, we learn the scientific method of streaking, staining, microscopy, aseptic culture, and selective and differential tests. These tests will help me identify my Unknown Bacteria. The first procedure I did was the isolation streak of my unknown out on a Trypticase Soy Agar. The purpose of Trypticase Soy Agar is to provide enough nutrients of the microorganism to grow. After I finish my isolation streak, my plate were incubated and grown. Once I got my plate to look at my results and I realize I started my streaking pattern wrong. Because of the way I started my streaking pattern I wasn’t able to see my own results. However, I did my own research of how my plate should have look like if I had did my streaking right. With an educated guess of my unknown species, the results I found for the plate have colonies agar that are tan- pigment, convex, circular, and smooth. The cells are also motile rods. The colonies can be observed under Ultraviolet Light. The second procedure was to perform a Gram stain. The purpose of the Gram stained method is to differentiate between a Gram positive and Gram negative organisms and also learning about the cellular morphology and arrangements. I carefully prepare a slide smear on three slides and then started the Gram stain procedure. Once the procedure was done, all three of my slides had a pink stain which automatically figured that my unknown bacteria was Gram negative. Then I examine the finished...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility, Mic and Mbc

...------------------------------------------------- Antimicrobial Susceptibility, MIC and MBC ------------------------------------------------- Microbiology Lab Report 3 Carolina Toscanojara Antibiotic Sensitivity. Objective: Antibiotics are chemical compounds that selectively interfere with the growth of microorganisms while causing little or no damage to the animal or human host. The purpose of this lab was to determine the effectiveness antibiotics against any given bacterium by means of examining the zone of inhibition, the minimum inhibitory concentration, and the minimum bactericidal concentration. Introduction: Chemical antimicrobial agents are chemical compounds that are capable of either preventing the microorganisms for multiplying (bacteriostatic) in order for the immune system of the host to overcome them or killing them completely (bactericidal). Antibiotics taken to improve the symptoms from a disease are called chemotherapeutic drugs; they are produced by a microorganism such as bacterium or fungus and/or are derived from a chemical produced by one. The test carried out to determine which antibiotic will be most successful in treating certain bacteria is called Antibiotic Susceptibility Test (AST) and it is often done by the Kirby-Bauer method, which uses Muller Hinton agar and paper discs containing specific concentrations of antibiotics are placed on the agar surface after rubbed with bacterial specimen. Results of AST are examined for zones of inhibition...

Antiseptics Lab Report

...Yasmin Martinez Biology 2310 Lab Report I Antibiotics, Antiseptics, and Disinfectants June 22, 2018 Introduction As the world continues to evolve, bacteria evolves along with it. This can begin to impact the effect of antimicrobials, which are used to inhibit or kill the growth of microorganisms. Antimicrobial testing is important to determine the susceptibility within a given agent. It is also important to consider resistance of an antimicrobial agent to a given microorganism. Antimicrobial resistance occurs when a given drug loses its effect due to the microbes changing, either because of mutation or they acquire new genetic information from other microbes.1 Materials and Methods The materials required for this lab are the four bacterial broth cultures: Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Bacillus subtilis. Eight trypticase soy agar (TSA) plates, a Kirby-Bauer Antibiotic Disk Dispenser, a container with sterile filter paper disk, another container with 70% alcohol, forceps, sterile swabs, Hydrogen Peroxide, Bleach, Antiseptic Mouth Wash,...

...rich tradition for the treatment of these infectious diseases (Titilope et al., 2012), both infectious and non-infectious. Attah et al. (2012) makes similar claims with the evaluation and development of compounds from similar claims with the evaluation and development of compounds from medicinal plants for the treatment of diseases which is one of the areas that is gaining grounds and acceptability world-wide (p.1). According to the World Health Organization, medicinal plants would be the best source to acquire different effective drugs and, therefore, those plants should undergo investigation to have a better understanding of their properties, safety and efficacy (Rajeh et al., 2010; Nascimiento et al., 2000). There are some published reports describing the antimicrobial activity of various crude plant extracts (Igoli et al., 2005; Alzoreky et al., 2003). It is estimated that there are about 2.5 million species of higher plants and the majority of these have not yet been examined for their pharmacological activities (Ram et al., 2003). In relation with the applications of herbal plants, weed, which is a plant that grows out of place and is competitive, persistent and pernicious (James et al., 1991), have been a part of civilization and many ancient documents speak of humans battling weeds in the crops they grow and also found to be resistant to most of the microbial disease that made us interested to know the potency behind (Ibrahim et al., 2012). Furthermore, according to...
