Southern Regional Medical Center: A Short Story

...One dismal day at the end of June in 1997, I sat in room 722 of Atlanta, Georgia’s Southeastern Regional Medical Center. People passed in suits of light blue and the repetitive sound of rain hit the window, along with the noise of all the machines in the room. Hospitals really are quite depressing, if you think about it. Everything is always so bland. The porcelain-white prison aguishly entrapped my already stimulated senses with misery. I stared out the window and watched the rain hit the window and pondered to myself how I was not ready for the bumpy road that lied ahead for my family to continue: more testing, surgery, chemotherapy and headaches. There I was thinking negatively again. I was now very depressed at the age of 17. I was feeling confused, angry, sad; I was an emotional wreck, actually. My heart felt like a heavy rock dragging me down. Imagine walking in New York City during rush hour, with huge, prickly whiskers attached to...

9/11 Alternate Ending

...There were no stars on the rainy London night. Rain pattered down onto the roof of a pub set between a record store and run down thrift shop. A man exited the pub, reaching for a cigarette in his pocket. He wandered into an alley, sheltered from the rain and searched for a lighter. A woman approached him with a lighter. The man was hesitant but his desperation for the nicotine led him to accept. Only minutes later, another woman entered the alley. She was greeted with a corpse that was still warm and the distant sound of high heels on pavement. Gretel’s heart pounded in her chest as she ran towards the dead man, in dim light she could just make out the dark blood glistening on his throat and she instantly knew it was too late. She dialed the...

The Subway Short Story

...how fire they say it is. I first heard the term in high school, a little here and there at first before it became a vernacular. Some friends have told me it’s a Brooklyn thing though I’m not sure. The city takes things from everywhere and erases the history behind it. It’s brick means it’s cold out. Urban dictionary says it comes from the description of the wind hitting someone’s face as hard as bricks. I love the term. Not everyone knows what it means but for those who know, there’s a connection between them only achieved by language. They belong to the same clan of people who know which streets are safe, which halal carts are good, and which mixtapes to avoid. People learn the city as they go. They remember the spot they had their first kiss, huddled under a tree, red and orange leaves falling and sticking to the ground. The contrast between the charcoal ground and the vibrant reds is always so jarring. They remember which street they saw their first fight on, Christopher street, between a shirtless man with stringy gray hair that came down below his ears and two blonde men in polo shirts and clean brown brogues. They remember Hurricane Sandy and remember seeing the trees smashing into cars and people waving their hands at helicopters for help during the months following it. They remember thinking about how the homeless were going to survive, only to have that thought vanish when he saw the usual man with a beanie and tattered olive cargo pants in the staircase of the Chambers...

...“There’s a race of men that don’t fit in, A race that can’t sit still; So they break the hearts of kith and kin, And they roam the world at will. They range the field and rove the flood, And they climb the mountain’s crest; Their’s is the curse of the gypsy blood, And they don’t know how to rest.” ― Robert W. Service Suddenly you’re ripped into being alive. And life is pain, and life is suffering, and life is horror, but my god you’re alive and its spectacular. do you remember the first time you were called annoying?
how your breath stopped short in your chest
the way the light drained from your eyes, though you knew your cheeks were ablaze
the way your throat tightened as you tried to form an argument that got lost on your tongue.
your eyes never left the floor that day.
you were 13. you’re 20 now, and i still see the light fade from your eyes when you talk about your interests for “too long,”
apologies littering every other sentence,
words trailing off a cliff you haven’t jumped from in 7 years.
i could listen to you forever, though i know speaking for more than 3 uninterrupted minutes makes you anxious.
all i want you to know is that you deserve to be heard
for 3 minutes
for 10 minutes
for 2 hours
forever. there will be people who cannot handle your grace, your beauty, your wisdom, your heart;
mostly because they can’t handle their own. but you will never be

When He Was Bad

...“It doesn‟t have to be complicated. You and me and a mutual attraction. It doesn‟t come much simpler than that.” “Good times—is that all you‟re about?” Ellie shook her head. “Of course you are. Men like you always are.” “Men like me?” “Arrogant, ego as wide as the blue Aussie sky. Always looking out for number one.” Matt studied her. The telltale blush, the sparkle in those eyes, the way her fingers played over the back of the chair. “You‟re a contradiction, do you realize that? You say you don‟t want complicated, yet you‟re rejecting simple. What do you want, Ellie Rose?” Her mouth tightened and she swept to the door, yanked it open. Then she turned and glared back at him. “With you, Matt McGregor? Nothing. I just want to be left alone.” When not teaching or writing, ANNE OLIVER loves nothing more than escaping into a book. Farewell to Arms

...heard the troops marching under the window and guns going past pulled by motortractors. There was much traffic at night and many mules on the roads with boxes of ammunition on each side of their packsaddles and gray motor trucks that carried men, and other trucks with loads covered with canvas that moved slower in the traffic. There were big guns too that passed in the day drawn by tractors, the long barrels of the guns covered with green branches and green leafy branches and vines laid over the tractors. To the north we could look across a valley and see a forest of chestnut trees and behind it another mountain on this side of the river. There was fighting for that mountain too, but it was not successful, and in the fall when the rains came the leaves all fell from the chestnut trees and the branches were bare and the...

The Crown of Ptolemy (Percy Jackson & Kane Chronicles Crossover #3) by Rick Riordan.Pdf

...to Rick, the idea for the Percy Jackson stories was inspired by his son Haley. But rumour has it that Camp Half-Blood actually exists, and Rick spends his summers there recording the adventures of young demigods. Some believe that, to avoid a mass panic among the mortal population, he was forced to swear on the River Styx to present Percy Jackson’s story as fiction. Rick lives in Boston, Massachussetts, (apart from his summers on Half-Blood Hill) with his wife and two sons. To learn more about Rick and the Percy Jackson and Kane Chronicles series, visit: www.rickriordanmythmaster.co.uk The Crown of Ptolemy ‘CARTER!’ I SHOUTED. Nothing happened. Next to me, pressed against the wall of the old fort, Annabeth peered into the rain, waiting for magical teenagers to fall out of the sky. ‘Are you doing it right?’ she asked me. ‘Gee¸ I dunno. I’m pretty sure his name is pronounced Carter.’ ‘Try tapping the hieroglyph multiple times.’ ‘That’s stupid.’ ‘Just try it.’ I stared at my hand. There wasn’t even a trace of the hieroglyph that Carter Kane had drawn on my palm almost two months back. He’d assured me that the magic couldn’t be washed away, but, with my luck, I’d accidentally wiped it off on my jeans or something. I tapped my palm. ‘Carter. Hello, Carter. Percy to Carter. Paging Carter Kane. Testing, one, two, three. Is this thing on?’ Still nothing. Usually I wouldn’t panic if the cavalry failed to show. Annabeth and I had been in a lot of bad situations...
