...Sashay Schettler Mr. R English 120 12 September 2013 Fancy Feast’s New Flavor for Snakes: Tender Kitten Feast in Grilled Chicken Flavored Gravy We tend not to drive too deeply into subjects that pit our brains against our hearts, animal human relationships being one. While easy to overlook, these relationships play a big part in our day to day lives, and as I’ve learned not always in a good way. I found out firsthand, while reading Hal Herzog’s Some We love, Some We hate, Some We Eat: Why It’s So Hard to Think Straight About Animals, how hard it is to see a subject in a new light. I found myself torn between what I thought of as morally right and logically correct. The major argument being, is it morally ok to feed unwanted kittens to snakes? As I write this paper, I periodically glance at the picture I have of my fluffy grey cat Henry. Henry passed away when he had to be relocated to my aunt’s ranch, our house flooded in 2009 and our new condo didn’t allow pets. Now Henry had a cozy life with the Schettlers and on the ranch. Yet my aunt claims to this day, that he died of a broken heart. I, however sweet and sentimental the thought, argue that he died because my mom accidentally let him go a couple of turns in the dryer… Henry was always a fighter; I rescued him from the woods, out of a litter of two kittens he was the only survivor. His mother and sister did not make it out of the woods, but Henry wasn’t giving up that easily. After the tragic incidents...

...Essay – Kittens by Dean Koontz The story, “Kittens” by Dean Koontz, is a short story. Back in the day, the families were very religious, and the families were pretty much the same. The father was the “leader” of the family, he made all the decisions. The mother stayed at home and took care of the house, cooking and the children. The story has a lot of religious themes. I don’t think this is a horror story, but it does have a couple of moments that could have that kind of brutal and gruesome theme. The main character is Marnie. She loves kittens and seems like a very normal, curious young girl. She seems so innocent through most of the story, but when she finds out that her parents are killing the kittens and not God, she gets so angry and take her revenge by killing the little twin babies. So she starts out as a sweet girl, who goes to Sunday school, does her homework and listens to her father, but she turns out to be a kind of psychotic. Or maybe she just doesn’t know how wrong it is to kill the twins. Her father is a pastor at the local church, and he is very religious and does not allow people to question God’s decisions and actions. Everyone obeys to the father. He is violent. When Marnie asks her father if God will take the kittens again, he simply answers “perhaps”. She gets mad and frustrated and keeps asking about the kittens and why God did what he did, and then her father hits her. Her mother stays home, cook, takes care of the house and the baby twins. The parents...

...Imagine that you are going to the animal shelter to adopt a kitten. You adopt the cutest one there. On your way home you notice that the kitten seems so happy that it is now going to have a home. Instead, when you get home you put the cat in stocks for a month, all the while you’re either force feeding it, depriving it of food and water, burning it, or hitting it all this because you can! Until finally you strangle it, break its neck and then decapitate it to make sure it’s dead. Feel uncomfortable? You should be, that is the way that the animals are treated during animal experimentation. Scientists are wasting countless lives of animals to cruel experiments that should never have been done. First of all most animal tests are not needed and are done in poor fashion. According to the article “Animal Welfare”, “First the test that was done...was for products that had already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This meant that the test didn’t need to be repeated. Second, the same test could have been done on human subjects who...

...A Shattered Heart Inspired by Pokémon, Catwings, and Warrior Cats. Shatter, a female black cat with a white stripe, sat alongside Spirit, a female white cat with a black stripe. They sat on the windowsill, looking at the blizzard outside. They were Popokis, meaning they had special powers. There was a special language for Popokis, called Olelo. Young Popokis had to learn Olelo. Shatter and Spirit saw the one they were looking for, the one named Spectre, a male white cat with black spots. For the first time, they saw another one. Spirit put on her goggles and spread her wings. They were dragon-like. Shatter waved her tail and two fins appeared. These types of Popokis were called Inos, and they were very rare. All cats in a litter are Inos when they’re born. Their brother, Snow, a white cat with blue eyes, had claws made of ice. “Come here, my little Inos,” Blizzard said; she was an albino cat, and mother to Snow, Shatter, and Spirit. Spirit glided over, and Shatter ran over to the leather bowl. Snow tumbled over, a sphere of ice over his head. “Blizzard, Blizzard, look what I found!” he said. “Yo Yinyin!” The ice melted away, revealing a sphere of glass. Inside, was a fox. Wait, no—a cat! There was a platform holding the sphere; it had a rectangular platform with the name of the very first Popoki: “Ma’awiya.” Spirit and Shatter looked at each other and scoffed. Many humans sold those spheres. That wasn’t even a rare find! They padded off together. Suddenly, Spirit flew...

...Michelle Jones Dr. Vaughn Composition 1 22 February2016 Raising Kittens Once far, far, far away just outside of Richwoods, Missouri, on our farm, I found and raised two tiny gray kittens. These two kittens were literally on our doorstep, as if the mother knew that we would take them in. They were lost and alone with no mother cat to care for them. No matter how loud they called, their mother just didn't come to their very loud calls. With their eyes still closed and not able to care for themselves we took them in. My family and I named these kittens Jewel and Princess. Taking care of kittens isn't really that different from raising children, it takes a lot of hard work to keep newborn kittens alive by feeding them often, cleaning them frequently, and giving them a warm place to sleep. These kittens were so hungry and I knew Jewel and Princess needed more than just plain cow’s milk to fill their empty stomachs, so I went online and found out how to make kitten formula. Then I did some research about how much they needed to eat, which I needed to know their approximate age in order to know how much and how often to feed them. The information told me a way to tell their approximate age by how big they are and if their eyes are open or closed. Jewel and Princess had fluffy gray fur that was really soft, their eyes were still closed and were the size of a female human palm. With this description, I figured they were about 1-2 weeks old. Jewel and Princess would need to be fed on...

...When a kitten is born, it is hard to believe that one of these helpless little pink things will become a graceful and powerful hunter. However, within a year, that tiny kitten will be a mature cat. Since kittens are born blind and are completely dependent on their mothers, it is no surprise that their first stage involves little more than eating and growing. However, once your kitten's eyes open, he will begin to explore the world around him. By the time he is four weeks old, he will be romping shakily about with his siblings. He can begin to learn to use the litter box and should start to become socialized. In the wild, a kitten's mother will start to supplement his diet with dead mice or other small prey. You may prefer to give him some soft kitten food or some dry food softened in water....

...Bringing a new kitten home can be a very exciting and stressful scenario for all involved, especially if there is already an older cat living in the home. Many factors must be considered before the little fur ball is brought into its new environment. A little initial effort in the beginning can go along way and can greatly insure that a positive foundation is set, which could make the difference between a good or a bad relationship between the two. As the new kitten arrives it will take some time for the adult cat to get use to or adjust to the new arrival. Behaviorally this is what could start the initial conflict because cats tend to be despondent to change. This can be primarily due to a feline’s tendencies towards being very territorial more so than canines. Territorial aggression occurs when an intruder enters its territory which could include the outside area,...

...Kittens are adorable and have taken the internet by storm, but they can be a handful for even the most experienced cat owner. They need lots of attention, can be spooked easily, will attack anything that moves, and can get into some interesting situations. Though after all of that, don’t give up on the difficult times, because in the end it’s worth it. In the summer of 2013 my family adopted two kittens from a local shelter. They were very cute, but like most kittens, were afraid of their surroundings. It is often advised that kittens be kept in one room in the house for the first two weeks. So the first day we had them, we got them settled in the finished basement and went on with our day. My mom took my brother to his football practice and I was left in charge of the cats....

...WOMEN’S HIGH HEEL DISCOMFORT ANALYSIS AND PROTOTYPE SOLUTION A Senior Project submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in General Engineering And Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo by Kevin Blakley and Annamarie Kepple February 2013 Graded by: ______________ Date of Submission__________________________ Checked by: _____________ Approved by: _____________________________ Page 1 of 76 ABSTRACT WOMEN’S HIGH HEEL DISCOMFORT ANALYSIS AND SOLUTION Kevin Blakley and Annamarie Kepple Women love high heeled shoes, but this love comes at the cost of comfort. Wearing high heels causes a lot of pain and, in the long term, health complications. This project tries to overcome the problem by ultimately making high heels more comfortable. In order to do this, one must first understand the reasons that high heels are uncomfortable, such as arch angle, heel height, and the changes in walking motion. Once there is a true understanding of the factors that contribute to high heel discomfort, the design stage can begin. The design selected for this project was a wedge heel that contained compressive material. This design would improve user comfort in four different criteria. These criteria were arch angle, compression of the shoe, foot rotation, and ground contact surface area of the heel. After the working prototype was created, it was performance...

...CUSTOMER SEGEMENTS/TARGET AUDIENCE Since entering the market in 2005, Dr.Scholls® insoles For HerTM was created to ease the discomfort many women experience from their shoes, specifically high heels. The product was originally intended to focus on older women who suffered from foot problems. Only recently has the For HerTM line been shifted to attract the younger demographics (ages 18-50). The types of women who will purchase products from the Dr. Scholl’s® For HerTM line tend to be women who are into the latest shoe fashions and are attracted to a variety of styles. The past 5 years, the women’s shoe industry has seen an increase in sky-high heels. Designers are adding more inches to many of their high heels. Sky-high heels are generally tended to attract women of a younger demographic (ages 18-35). Although these sky-highs are the latest trend, many of these shoes lack comfort. Not to mention the medical implications that can surface from wearing them for long periods of time. Many women, especially younger women, who enjoy purchasing fashionable shoes, will sacrifice comfort just for style. Increasing the awareness of this product will give women the opportunity to wear their shoes longer without discomfort. While it is said that higher price does not always guarantee quality, when it comes to women’s shoes many times the more expensive shoe brands are in fact more comfortable that those shoes on the cheaper end. Young women between the ages of 18 to 35 find themselves either...

...Background Walking with high-heeled shoes is a common cause of venous complaints such as pain, fatigue, and heavy-feeling legs. The aim of the study was to clarify the influence of high-heeled shoes on the venous return and test the hypothesis that women wearing different styles of high-heeled shoes present an impaired venous return when compared with their values when they are barefoot. Methods Thirty asymptomatic women (mean age, 26.4 years) wearing appropriately sized shoes were evaluated by air plethysmography (APG), a test that measures changes in air volume on a cuff placed on the calf, while they performed orthostatic flexion and extension foot movements and altered standing up and lying down. The test was repeated in four situations: barefoot (0 cm), medium heels (3.5 cm), stiletto high heels (7 cm), and platform high heels (7 cm). The APG values of venous filling index (VFI), ejection fraction (EF), and residual volume fraction (RVF) were divided into four groups according to heel height and compared by repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results RVF was increased in the groups wearing high heels (stiletto and platform) compared with the barefoot group (P < .05). RVF was increased in the medium-heel group (3.5 cm) compared with the barefoot group (P < .05), and despite the lack of statistical significance, the medium-heel group showed lower values of RVF compared with the two high-heel groups. The EF parameter followed the opposite tendency, showing higher...

...High-Heeled Shoes INTRODUCTION: “Give a girl the right shoe and she can conquer the world” –Marilyn Monroe Shoes in general have typically served as markers of gender, class, race, and ethnicity. No other shoe, however, has gestured toward leisure, sexuality, and sophistication as much as the high-heeled shoe. Often the last piece of an ensemble or the final detail to be added to an outfit, the high-heel is a wardrobe staple that has come a long way! The high-heel has transformed from a measure of class and wealth, to a serious fashion statement. ANCIENT TIMES: Egyptian murals tell us that butchers were the originators of high heels, using them to walk through scores of dead animals without getting insides on their outsides. Most of the lower class in ancient Egypt walked barefoot, but from figures on murals dating from 3500 B.C. illustrations of both upper-class males and females are seen wearing heels, probably for ceremonial purposes. Greece and Rome, platform sandals called kothorni, later known as buskinsin during the Renaissance, were shoes with high wood or cork soles that were popular particularly among actors who would wear shoes of different heights to indicated varying social status or importance of characters. In ancient Rome, sex trade was not illegal and female prostitutes were identified by their high heels (Wilson 2005). HIGH-HEELS IN FASHION: High heels as we know them today were actually brought into the mainstream in the 16th century...
