Dichotomy- a division or contrast between two things that are represented as being opposed different 17. Diction- the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing 18. Direct characterization- process by which personality of a fictions character is revealed by descriptive adjectives, phrases, or epithets 19. Dramatic situation- an event or idea of a poem that’s clarified by whom the speaker is addressing 20. Epiphany- a flash of recognition in which of recognition in which someone is seen in a new light 21. Exposition- a comprehensive description and explanation of an idea or theory 22. Falling Action- the part of a literary plot that occurs after the climax has beenreached and the conflict has been resolved. 23. Foreshadowing- to show or indicate beforehand; prefigure 24. Flashback- a device in the narrative of a motion picture, novel, etc., by which an event or scene taking place before the present time in the narrative is inserted into the chronological structure of thework. 25. Hyperbole- an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally 26. Imagery- figurative description or illustration; rhetorical images collectively. 27. In Medias Res- in or into the middle of a narrative or plot 28. Indirect Characterization- process by which the personality of a fictitious character is revealed through the character's speech, actions, appearance, etc. 29. Irony- the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning 30. Juxtaposition- an act or instance of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast 31. Metaphor- a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance 32. 1st person- the grammatical person used by a speaker in statements referring to himself or herself or to a group including himself or herself, as I and we in English 33. 2nd person- the person used by a speaker in referring to the one or ones to whomhe or she is speaking: in English you is a second person pronoun. 34. 3rd person limited- the speaker is not part of the story, but tells about the other characters but limits information about what one character sees and feels. 35. 3rd person omniscient- the speaker is not part of the story, but is able to "know" and describe what all characters are thinking. 36. Metonymy- the substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant, for example suit for business executive, or the track for horse racing 37. Monologue- a long speech by one actor in a play or movie, or as part of a theatrical or broadcast program 38. Mood- the atmosphere that pervades a literary work with the intention of evoking a certain emotion or feeling from the audience 39. Motif- a recurring object, concept, or structure in a work of literature. A motif may also be two contrasting elements in a work, such as good and evil. 40. Narrator- a person who gives an account or tells the story of events, experiences 41. Overstatement- a type of verbal irony in which the speaker exaggerates, says more than what he or she means 42. Paradox- a statement that initially appears to be contradictory but then, on closer inspection, turns out to make sense 43. Parallel Structure- a repetition of a sentences using one structure 44. Persona- in literature, the persona is the narrator, or the storyteller, of a literary work created by the author 45. Personification- a figure of speech in which something nonhuman characteristics 46. Plot- the sequence in which the author arranges events in story 47. Protagonist- the hero or central character of a literary work 48. Retrospect- a review, survey, or contemplation of things in the past 49. Rising Action- the part of a drama which begins with the exposition and sets the stage for the climax 50. Sentence Structure- the grammatical arrangement of words in sentence 51. Setting- the time and place in which stories unfold 52. Simile- a figurative speech which takes the form of a comparison between two unlike quantities for which a basis for comparison can be found, and which uses the words “like” or “as” in the comparison 53. Soliloquy- in a drama, a moment when a character is alone and speaks his or her thoughts aloud 54. Speaker- the voice in a poem or the narrator of the story 55. Stereotype- an author’s method of treating a character so that the character is immediately identified with a group 56. Style- many things enter into the style of a work: the author’s use of figurative language, diction, sound effects and other literary devices 57. Suspense- suspense in fiction results primarily from two factors: the reader’s identification with and concern for the welfare of a convincing and sympathetic character, and an anticipation of violence 58.
