...major business decisions. Strong leaders set the tone for their business and guide their company—and employees—to be the best they can be. It helps to have some principles in place that guide you—here are five of the best: 1. SELL YOUR MISSION STATEMENT TO YOUR TEAM AS YOU WOULD AN INVESTOR You know that elevator pitch you've got memorized—what your company is all about, what your overarching goals are, why you come into work each day? That's an important message for potential investors and partners, but it's especially important for the people working every day to achieve it. In a recent TED Talk, leadership expert Simon Sinek discussed the value of "why." "Every single person, every single organization on the planet knows what they do, 100%. . . But very, very few people or organizations know why they do what they do. And by "why" I don't mean "to make a profit." By "why," I mean: What's your purpose? What's your cause?" An inspired leader gives their employees' work meaning: managing their feelings of inspiration and value is as much a part of your job as overseeing their work. 2. A TEAM IS ONLY AS STRONG AS ITS PLAYERS Apathy is one of the workplace leader's greatest adversaries. Given the choice between a staff of worker bees and a staff of self-motivated, goal-oriented leaders, I'd choose the latter. While that may seem harder to manage, consider this: each employee has a specific job, and a specific role within the corporate culture. Each person has...

Eventually it provides solutions, such as a corporate strategic plan which focuses on the improvement of cultural diversity in the workplace by means of cultural diversity training. These best practices of cultural diversity are discussed in detail both in the literature review and in the study. The bachelor’s thesis has used two research methods, both qualitative and quantitative research approach. Qualitative research method was implemented by seven in-depth interviews with a target group of managers in the JW Marriott resort hotel whereas the quantitative research component executed captive questionnaire survey and included target group of entire workforce of the three properties in Stillwater. ...1.2. Differentiate between leadership and management. According to the extract how can leaders become more effective? Discuss. Leadership and management are two terms which have been used hand in hand and sometimes are often used interchangeably to describe positions in which one may direct a group of people. The might sound similar but they have different meaning and are one of the most researched topics in business management today. Today’s groups, organizations, and teams need both effective leaders and effective managers to run a successful operation. While some obvious similarities (i.e. they both involve influencing constituents or employees; authority and power are generally given with both positions) can be found between leadership and management, there are also some striking differences (i.e. management is often more task-oriented; leadership is often considered more inspirational and visionary). Management refers to roles which typically involve the supervision of employees. The depth or reality of a manager’s responsibility may differ depending on his position, for example a human resources manager has to ensure that his subordinates arrange and carry out recruitment to occupy vacant company positions, while a finance manager has to organize the collection of commercial trends and aid decision making of the higher-ups based on analyses. The manager is responsible for creating and executing plans based on organization’s goals set by the superiors and to measure...

...law firm, are invited to a free conference-room lunch every day. Managing partner Bernard Hyman says the lunches began as a chance to talk business but soon became anticipated social gatherings. “We tell stories, talk about the weekend,” he says, “talk about the football game, talk about our husbands, talk about our wives, talk about our children.” During lunchtime at JW Genesis Financial Corp., Boca Raton, Fla., Vice Chairman Joel Marks lets workers view his TV-sitcom tapes, including “Seinfeld,” “Mary Tyler Moore” and “Taxi.” Terry Deal, business professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., says companies that bring play and celebration into the workplace often have higher profits. A book he co-wrote cites as an example Southwest Airlines, which encourages crews to joke with passengers. But he says few companies incorporate play: “One thing we are finding over and over is that work just isn’t any fun anymore.” Some observers would argue the fun work place is just another fad? What do you think? Does having fun at work lead to higher productivity? Use course concepts to formulate your response. Your Answer: I believe that there needs to be balance between fun and work. If people do not enjoy their job it will lead to lower productivity. My last job was in retail and the store manager tried to make it as enjoyable as possible, but the longer I worked there the less fun it was. A major contributor to this was the daily e-mails from the district manager. There was...

...The Evolution of HR: Developing HR as an Internal Consulting Organization Richard M. Vosburgh, Mirage Resorts, MGM MIRAGE A s the role and impact of the HR profession continue to evolve, we have reached a critical crossroad. Together and now, business leaders and HR professionals have the opportunity to understand the history that brings us to our current situation, to be informed by predictable trends, and to make the transformation necessary to result in organizational competitive advantage and HR functional viability. Over the last hundred years, the HR profession evolved dramatically, usually in response to external conditions. Unquestionably we are changing—the issue in front of us is whether we will define that future or simply react to the changes that continue to occur in the economy and in our business models. Human ResouRce Planning 30.3 11 If we do not step forward with compelling HR leadership, the future will be determined for us. When the June 2005 Business Week reports “Why HR Gets No Respect,” the August 2005 Fast Company proclaims “Why We Hate HR,” and the “evil personnel director” in Dilbert continues to get knowing laughs, something is going on that the HR profession needs to address. This set of issues goes beyond the never-ending lamentations about lacking a seat at the table for the top HR person—this is about the future of HR in total. We present a historical review and conclude that HR’s greatest opportunity is to develop the organizational...

...SPECIAL ARTICLE Postfertilization Effects of Oral Contraceptives and Their Relationship to Informed Consent Walter L. Larimore, MD; Joseph B. Stanford, MD, MSPH T he primary mechanism of oral contraceptives is to inhibit ovulation, but this mechanism is not always operative. When breakthrough ovulation occurs, then secondary mechanisms operate to prevent clinically recognized pregnancy. These secondary mechanisms may occur either before or after fertilization. Postfertilization effects would be problematic for some patients, who may desire information about this possibility. This article evaluates the available evidence for the postfertilization effects of oral contraceptives and concludes that good evidence exists to support the hypothesis that the effectiveness of oral contraceptives depends to some degree on postfertilization effects. However, there are insufficient data to quantitate the relative contribution of postfertilization effects. Despite the lack of quantitative data, the principles of informed consent suggest that patients who may object to any postfertilization loss should be made aware of this information so that they can give fully informed consent for the use of oral contraceptives. Arch Fam Med. 2000;9:126-133 Oral contraceptives (OCs) are among the most extensively studied and used medications in the world,1 and are accessible without a prescription in some countries, although still virtually unavailable in others. In America, OCs have...

...Abstract Communication is any everyday occurrence in which everyone participates. This report attempted to study the use of modern communications and negotiation theory and how it applies to everyday experiences. To achieve this, a workplace scenario was analysed and theories were applied in order to gain an understanding of what was happening in the interaction and what could be done to try to achieve a better outcome for all parties. In this report firstly a literature review was undertaken in order to introduce the reader in the types of theories which would be examined in the context of the work place case study. Next a detailed discussion of the workplace scenario was undertaken highlighting the key points of the situation and interactions as well as a detailed description of the three key characters and the key behaviours which they are seen to display. In the main section of the report a detailed review of the applicable theories and how they are demonstrated in the case study. The theories investigated cover the areas on Conflict, Communication, Negotiation and the use of Power Bases and found that many different different theories were visible in the day to day communication. Some of the theories which were seen and discussed were Negotiation Styles and Strategies, use of a BANTA, the use of nonverbal communication techniques and theories of social tension. In the final section of the report three recommendations were given which when used would provide the parties...
