Knowing Your Audience Paper and Communication Release

Because every audience is different, communication must be designed according to the circumstances, to take considerations of the needs of potential receivers of the message. When communicating to anyone, the roles of the people, and the audience should be considered to guarantee the successfully code and decode of the message. An inadequate misunderstanding of your audience can lead to a poor delivery of information. During the unfortunate event at the Chilean Copper Mine Collapse the most important consideration to anyone in the audience was to hear the wellbeing of the miners. The families of the miners and the employees of the company must receive the message differently, according to their needs and persuasion of the situation. Some precautions must be placed before the messages are share to family members, company employees, and media. When communicating tragedy news with family members, the company must deliver the information of the mine collapse with an extreme level of tact, clarity, hope, and assurance that their loved ones will survive this incident. Once the family members are receiving information about the situation is extremely important to keep updating continuous information about the situation, family members need to keep high hopes of their loved ones survival is important to them. The company must deliver the most current information to his employees to create stability, strategies, safety issues, and hope among them. The needs of the family members and company employees may be similar because they are affected by this tragedy. Addressing their needs separately will help them understand the efforts the company is putting to provide a solution to this event. The company must know how to address every member of the audience to avoid conflicts and misunderstanding of information. When addressing the media with information, the company must provide relatively and current information, informing personal details to the family and employees first. The company must take precautionary actions before and after they deliver information because if any person misunderstands part of the message can create a big chaos among the audience. Some precautionary actions that the company must take before and after informing of the situation to family members include: contact immediate relatives of the victim, avoid mistaken identities of trap employees, offer counseling to families of the victims, and provide feedback to each concern of the families to ensure that the information was properly receive. Same precautionary actions must take place to ensure that the company employees are properly receiving the message, although because company employees may be aiding in the recovery process they need to keep inform of any changing situations, such as water shortage, oxygen shortage, food available, health of victims, progress, and strategies to solve this situation. The company has a big responsibility to communicate information to a diverse audience, they must do it cautiously, they must take their time to know the needs of their audience, to provide, and inform reliable information. In reality, this situation was not communicated properly; it was a chaos because of the lack of persuading the audience and providing safety resources to the miners before the incident. In fact 31 of the 33 trapped miners have filed a lawsuit against the Chilean government and the mine this information according to time.com. “… The miners emerged after 69 days trapped 2,300 ft. below the Atacama Desert floor, heads held high” (Nelsen, 2011, p.1) The miners are blaming their government of their ordeal because of their lack of proper inspections. This unfortunate event marked the lives of 33 miners, their families, coworkers, community, country, and the world; could to follow this event through social media. Fortunately, the 33 miners were rescue, and they are recovering; only they can tell if the company and their government provided enough help to their family’s needs during their ordeal. This is a fascinating story of survival, where the miners show us that they knew their surroundings well enough to survive. The company had the responsibility to identify the most appropriate channel to communicate this situation to the miner families and their employees. The most appropriate channel to communicate family member is face-to-face. If I was in this situation, I will prepare a statement containing the following information: Affected Family: “Today we learned of an unfortunate event in one of our mines. We learned that some of our mineworkers are trapped because of a mine collapse. We are here to provide all of our support in this event, as right now we are doing everything humane possible to find ways of communication with our members. Please try to remain calm; we are using the best technology to rescue all of our members. We know that this situation may be overwhelming for you and your family; we are providing counseling, support and monetary assistance to help your family cope in this situation. We are keeping high hopes and praying for your husband wellbeing.”

I consider a memo or e-mail to be the adequate channel of communication to inform all the employees of the company, I will include the following on my statement: Mineworkers: One of our mines has collapsed, trapping inside 33 team member, we are asking for your support during this tragic event. All of your abilities, ideas, and help will be appreciated. We need you support during this tragedy, we are a team, and we need to find a way to help our friends trapped inside the mine. Please keep your spirit high and pray for our friends.
Fortunately, this event ended with a successful recovery of all 33 miners, who maintained their spirits and bodies alive during 69 days trapped about 2,300 feet below a cold and dark mine. Their survivor instincts help them to fight for their lives with limited resources.
