Korean Pop
Recently, Korean artists have become more and more popular in America. Rain, a Korean singer, recently held a concert at the Madison Square Garden, which was sold out. SNSD was on the David Letterman Show. A song by Wonder Girls was included in the Billboard Hot 100 Songs. A Korean-Pop chart was even added to the Billboard charts. But why is Korean music becoming so popular in America?

Korean music is different from the music in America.
In my opinion, the Korean artists have unique musical and performance styles, which are new and fresh compared to some American styles. For example, a famous Korean band named 2AM will just stand on the stage and sing slow and emotional songs, while American artists such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Katy Perry all sing and dance. The reason 2AM performs this way is because they focused on their actual ability to sing and understand the song more than on performance.

Another group from Korea is a group called f(x). They sing about things that don’t really make sense together – they will sing about a ‘Pinocchio’, and go straight into saying they are in danger. 2AM and f(x) are two of the many examples of how Korean music is different from American music. The other artists all have unique styles and they are different from each other.

The Korean artists are ‘perfect’ at what they do.
The Korean artists are groomed by their companies to look, sing and dance extremely well. The entertainment companies will plan every step needed for their artist to succeed. Some of these steps include vocal training, dance lessons, and in some cases, even plastic surgery. This might sound a little overbearing, but the results are artists who are great at the things they do – artists who sing great, look good, and dance well.

The Korean music is becoming more popular in America because every artist has a different style of music and performance and they are all very good at what they do. The artists are rapidly expanding their market and winning over new fans. This is a good thing for Americans because they are exposed to different kinds of music. As more and more Americans are exposed to Korean music, they will get to enjoy the Korean culture and experience something interesting and new.

Beginning of K-Pop

...The history of Korean popular music can be traced back to 1885 when an American missionary, Henry Appenzeller started teaching American and British folk songs at a school. These songs were called changga in Korean, and they were typically based on a popular Western melody sung with Korean lyrics. The well-known song "Oh My Darling, Clementine" was for example known as "Simcheongga".[note 1] During the Japanese rule (1910–1945) popularity of changga songs rose as Koreans tried to express their feelings against Japanese oppression through music. One of the most popular songs was "Huimangga" (희망가, The Song of Hope). The Japanese confiscated the existing changga collections and published lyrics books of their own.[41][third-party source needed] The first known Korean pop album was "Yi Pungjin Sewol" (This Tumultuous Time) by Park Chae-seon and Lee Ryu-saek from 1925 and contained popular songs translated from Japanese. The first pop song written by a Korean composer is thought to be "Nakhwayusu" (낙화유수, Fallen Blossoms on Running Water) sung by Lee Jeong-suk in 1929.[41] In the mid-1920s, Japanese composer Masao Koga mixed traditional Korean music with Gospel music that American Evangelists introduced in the 1870s. This type of music became known as Enka in Japan, and later in Korea as Trot (Korean: "트로트").[42][43] These songs became extremely popular.[41][third-party source needed] Later, in the 21st century K-pop singers rediscovered the genre of trot, for example singers like...

Pop Language

...in the 21st Century. She gets in her car and immediately turns on her favorite pop radio station on the way to work. Her friends from college invite her to a party after her shift ends, and she invites a few friends as well. In the car on the way to the party, while chit chatting over upbeat background music, one of them exclaims, “Oh! I love this song!” One of them turns the volume up and they all sing together to the catchy tune and the easy words of “Young, Wild, and Free” by Wiz Khalifah, “Roll one. Smoke one. When you live like this you’re supposed to party…” This line in the song is extremely easy to learn because it has been repeated several times in less than three minutes, and is set to the sound of a catchy tune. Perhaps pop music has been designed to fit into this modern lifestyle, where one is always on the go, and wants to stay active and energetic. Who has time to really listen to what the song is saying if it has rhythm and is easy to sing along to? Without listening, we tune out the important form of expression that is musical lyrics, and this drop in emphasis encourages a lack of investment in song composition. American Pop music’s language is digressing to the point where it is more offensive, repetitive, and shallower than ever. Offensive language in modern pop music is becoming more normal. The modern American parent can be easily deceived by the “happy” nature of a pop song and think nothing of their eight year old listening to it, but after hearing...

The 1950s

...rebellious Fifties youth. Haley's recording of "Rock Around the Clock" is generally labeled to be the song that, more than any other, brought rock and roll into mainstream culture around the world.  Popular music of the 1950s When the 1950s are mentioned, the first type of music to come to most people's minds is rock 'n roll. But music in the fifties was more than just rock 'n roll.  The early 1950s era Pop music focusd on the song’s story and emotional delivery and was essentially a continuation of the crooner sound of the previous decade. Crooner sound refers to the sentimental songs, especially the love songs of the 1930s and 1940s It was not until the middle of the decade, Rock and roll entered the mainstream and became a major force in American record sales. And with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records, popular artists such as Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Berry became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll.  The era of 50s rock-and-roll ended with the deaths of the three American rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and the conscription of Elvis into the US Army. Nevertheless, the influence of these early rockers has been felt in popular music worldwide....

...there are many kind of music such as pop, rock, jazz, rap… But most of them have some commons, which make many people misunderstanding. Two kinds of music which are very popular are rock music and pop music. When people listens to rock and pop music, how they can know what is rock music and pop music. There are a lot of characteristics that people can recognize the similarity and difference of them. Firstly, the lyric between rock and pop music is opposite. Rock lyric is the way emotion of everyone in the band can be revealed in the strong way. It talks about anger, danger, pessimism… In contrast, pop lyric often talk about love, feelings that author feels… Secondly, they have difference of rhythm. The pop song is often easy to listen, it is softer than rock. But rock song is not like that, it is very strong through the bass. The rock song is difficult to listen because the rhythm is very fast. Some rock songs can’t be listened what the song talk about. Finally, what do they focus on? Pop music depends on vocals and beat. When people talk about a famous pop song, they just remember a vocal of singer. However when people talk about a famous rock song, they can remember all member in the rock band and how they play this song. Rock music depends mainly on instruments like guitar, drum, or bass. Interpret Meanings Behind Shake It Off Lyrics by Taylor Swift

...Amanda Medina AMST101 QUIZ #1 : Popular Music “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift I choose this song because firstly, this song is one of the most popular song lately in America since the day it was released it was the #1 hit song on Billboard. For me personally, this song has a very catchy melody, where at first the band started of with an up-beat drum which could create a feelings of excitement. There are also a couple of repetition on the hook, 'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off So I think these repetition makes it easier for listeners to remember the song words, also the melody. Additionally, this song talks about a girl who’s brave, confident, happy and she doesn’t care about what people thinks on her. If we see from the lyrics, Taylor uses a different kinds of words in every new chorus which makes the song interesting and not boring. In some part of the song, she sings the melody into a slower and softer sound to show the feelings where she’s chill and just go with the flow of music she listens to, But I keep cruising..
Can't stop, won't stop moving.. It's like I got this music…
In my mind, saying, "It's gonna be alright...

“Pop Music” or Junk Food for the Soul

...You may call it Pop Music but it makes me sick! P-Diddy, J-Lo, Britney Spears, Vanilla Ice, ABBA; it's all the same to me. Just some cheap music written by an Accountant, performed by a moron and packaged for an all too naïve pre-teen audience. Perhaps you like Pop Music, I don't. It's music that tastes great, easily digested, but only to become tomorrow's shit. One week it's J-Lo and her new hit single, the clothes she's wearing, her unstable relationships. Week after she's clichéd, blasé, the butt of jokes...old-school. Now here comes (insert any name here) who is fresh, a driving force in a new artistic form, cool, hip, dressing flashy, everyone and their sister is singing their tunes. J-LO is out, (insert any name here) is in. This is the life of a Pop phenom. I hate this music because it's cheap: the melody's are too simple, the lyrics too predictable and juvenile, it's life is short-lived. One week the nation is dancing to the tune, in the next everyone denies even liking the song. Something else is in... hip. This music is created by venture capitalists who hire professional song writers or who write the material themselves. Next they hire some unknown talent and sign them to an unreasonable contract. They book time in a studio, record the song and heavily promote their “new wonder kind” to every 12-year old in the country who wouldn't know any better. They plaster their “wonder kind” on backpacks, lunch boxes, sell their 50-page biographies, and film them for an upcoming...

The Man

...Lady Gaga Lady Gaga right now is one of the hottest music artists on the entire planet. Her songs, music videos, the way she dresses, and even the way she acts keeps everyone interested and guessing on what in the world she is going to do next. She is famous not only because her songs and her music is so good, even though it is, but also because she is so interesting to follow as a person and she really tells it how it is. In a recent interview Gaga was asked if she does do illegal substances at all and she stated that she had to be honest and come clean to the fact that she does smoke Marijuana on occasion because she feels it helps her connect on a deeper level with music and that she doesn’t want to lie to her fans about it, and she also doesn’t want to condone the use of the drug. Besides being a great singer, stylist, and dancer Lady Gaga also does more than her fair part of community service. Gaga partnered with Virgin Mobile offering VIP tickets to fans who volunteer their time to homeless youth organizations, which raised more than $80,000 to support homeless kids, and created 30,000 hours of community service for hundreds of charities across the country. She also is partnered with the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) where she always volunteers time to talk with and hang out with kids. So not only does her music stray from the mainstream pop music culture but the way she used her music and shows to inspire people to volunteer there time to charities...

Music Is Important

...9/6/13 In my life music has always played an important role because my parents always had some type of music on. Since I was the middle child, I would get stuck listening to my sister’s music in the car and around the house. I never really had an interest in her Top 40 pop hits, and leaned towards more of what my father listened to. My dad would always listen to older, rock type music. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Dr. Hook, and even Tom Jones. As I grew older and started elementary school my taste for music started to change. I started basing my friends off of who liked older rock music. I would sit in the play yard at recess and we would listen to our Walkman’s and talk about how we wish we could play music the way our favorite bands was able to play. As I started to play sports in middle school, my taste for music begin to turn.During sports, I met a lot of people with different tastes in music. I stayed away from people who liked country, pop, or dance music. I started making connections with friends who listened to rock, hip hop, and rap. Most of these people were my friends throughout high school and some are even today. In college, music has played a huge role in my life. I always have music around me no matter what I am doing. Music in Western Civilization in 20th Century

...Music in western civilization in 20th century Music is defined as sounds that are arranged in a particular pattern in which when played are exciting to hear or listen to. Music is commonly used as a form or relaxation and entertainment. The chronology of music started way back in the period of the medieval times when the chanting was introduced into most of the catholic churches. Music then had moved through the following stages up to until the modern day music (Burkholder, Grout & Palisca 2010, p. 276). It originated in the medieval era then moved to the renaissance, baroque, classical music which ushered in the romantic music which in turn paved way to the modern music and hence the contemporary music of the 20th century. Medieval music traces back to times when music was only done to kings and queens or generally the royal people. It later found its way to liturgical platforms where the music was introduced to the Roman Catholic churches as this time Christianity was real emerging. During this time many musical artists were priests or members of the clergy. As the music entered the renaissance era the printing media had already been established. There emerged a class of composers from the western nations of for instance France Belgium Netherlands etc. Music in this era had become strong with especially the use of instruments. This included the a cappella. As the music moved on to the baroque era it had started to be used to bring a certain mood. The music composers used...
