Kreon's Pride In Sophocles Antigone

Antigone Antigone is a play written by Sophocles. In this book, Antigone wants her brother, Polyneices, to have a proper burial. Kreon catches Antigone trying to bury him which is against the law and wants her dead. Kreon wants to kill Antigone for his own pride. He also kills Antigone since he did not want to viewed as a weak person. Kreon wants Antigone dead due to the fact that she is a woman. If he were to lose to a woman, he would lose all his pride since men were suppose to be stronger than woman. He says, “Nations belong to the men with power. That’s common knowledge” (Sophocles, 888-889). The diction of the words “men with power” shows how he believes that people without power should not have a say in anything. He wants others to realize that he is a king and that he should be treated like one. Although his son argues with him about the decision of killing Antigone, Kreon states that people have to listen to their fathers. He says, “Son, you should hold that to your heart. Everything’s second to a father’s will.”(Sophocles, 777-778)The use of the word “second” shows how Kreon disregards what other people say to him. This also shows how he does not care about the fact that his son is talking to him and treats him like he would to a normal citizen. Kreon also believes that everything that Tiresias was telling him was a lie. Tiresias was. He says, “Yes, and I say so because you love cash, all of you, prophetic profiteers” (Sophocles, 1222-1223). the use of the words “prophetic profiteers” shows how is is mad at Tiresias. He believes that Tiresias is lying to Kreon for money. This also shows how although Tiresias is telling the truth, Kreon will dont listen to him because it puts him and his family in danger. This shows how Kreon does not want to be controlled by other people and wants others to realizes that he is the ruler of them. kreon did not want to be viewed as a person who was easily convinced so he made his own choices and did not listen to others.
