Kudler Fine Foods System Solution

Kudler Fine Foods was started by Kathy Kudler in 1998 and is a premiere gourmet grocery store with three different stores located in Southern California for those savvy shoppers who are searching for the finest meats, produce, cheeses, and wine. Customer satisfaction and very little competition are Kudler Fine Foods biggest strengths. However, their biggest weakness is the fact that even Kathy Kudler is the owner of the company; she is the sole person responsible for order replacement, inventory, and all other major business issues. Geographic expansion of the store and store profitability will suffer if Kudler Fine Foods does not diversify into e-commerce, if an Enterprise System is not developed to allow managers and executive to access real time information concerning store locations, and if new inventory and order replacement procedures are not developed to provide all store locations with necessary inventories and the ability to order the specialty items that Kudler Fine Foods is known for.
Kudler's New Organizational Structure Kudler Fine Foods will need to adopt a new organizational structure in order for the proposed system solutions to be effective. Kathy Kudler currently is a one person show; she is responsible for all store inventory control and purchases and she travels to each store on a daily basis to manage the stores. This method of management and inventory control must change so that Kudler can expand into ever emerging markets and open new store fronts. For a manager to be an effective leader, the manager must be able to influence the people that are in his or her charge. “People tend to do their best work when they are in an environment that makes them feel valued, where they get a “pat on the back” or a “thank you” for a job well done”

They have three locations (La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas). Kudler’s owner Kathy Kudler works seven days a week visiting each store. Managers handle the day-to-day details, but Kathy handles the buying for the stores. Kathy and her team are looking to reorganize Kudler Fine Foods to lessen the workload for her and her management team. Reorganization would allow the group more time to spend with customers and balance the home and work life more efficiently. Business Needs In order for the reorganization of Kudler Fine Foods to be successful an enterprise system will be implemented. ...Kudler Fine Foods Operations Focus This paper will define how Kudler Fine Foods can benefit from Internet purchasing and how this new system and process will be implemented. This paper begins by analyzing Kudler’s current purchasing processes and systems and makes recommendations to systems and processes that Kudler could use to improve their current processes. Incorporating an Internet-based purchasing system would add convenience and provide Kudler with sustaining a robust customer and supplier relationship. Currently Kudler has no purchasing department in any of their locations but standard purchasing procedures have been implemented. Currently each department manager in each location determines requirements for the items his or her department sells. These managers place purchase orders directly with suppliers using standard purchase order forms in each location. Departmental managers have the responsibility to obtain the best price, quality, and delivery possible. Managers also receive and verify the orders to decipher if they received the correct items and quantities that arrived in undamaged condition. Items are documented on an order received form and forwarded to accounting in order for the invoices on the items to be paid (Kudler Fine Foods website, 2011). The department managers at each location must check with their counterparts in other locations on the pricing, quality, and delivery of the merchandise they order. Kudler Fine Foods, like many other organizations today is facing challenges because of an increase in competition and an unstable economy. After reviewing Kudler’s strategic plan, several issues were identified regarding the organization’s business practices. I will address one issue and identify alternative solutions. I will also provide a vision for Kudler by describing where the organization could be if management realize the opportunity. Trouble in Fine Foods Paradise

...The mission and vision statements of Kudler Fine Foods describe a business that aspires to be a premier gourmet foods store that provides only the very best foods and wines to its customers (University of Phoenix, 2003). However, it will be an impossible task for this business to continue to provide fine foods to its customers if the franchise does not make enough annual profits to support the basic infrastructure of the business. This is exactly the kind of scenario described in the Kudler Fine Foods 2003 Strategic Plan. Only one of the three stores in the Kudler Fine Foods franchise is performing well financially (University of Phoenix, 2003). Additionally, approximately 12% of the perishable merchandise is either thrown away or donated to homeless shelters two to three times per week (University of Phoenix, 2003). While donating food to homeless shelters supports the community and provides a good basis for social responsibility, Kudler Fine Foods cannot continue to maintain a rate of donations that is detrimental to the bottom line of the business profits. Continual hits to the bottom line will ultimately lead to closing the business. Kudler Fine Foods needs to determine a method that reduces product waste and maximizes profits. The Kudler Fine Foods 2003 Strategic Plan (University of Phoenix, 2003) reveals many issues that contribute to product waste and profit losses however this paper will only discuss two issues. The first issue is there are too many product...
