A case study done by Kyle E. Miller, who is a graduate of medical education at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, the study was done to a male weightlifter who ended up rupturing his bicep. This whole accident came about when the male was lifting weights and he was doing bicep curls when all of a sudden he felt a snap. Right away he did not do anything but then went to a clinic about three days after the accident and the doctors found out that he had ruptured the long head of the bicep brachii. The author talks about how this was such a rare case done to a twenty eight year old who was healthy and was in great shape. There was no one real reason that pointed the doctors in the right direction for what had caused this. Doctors and the patient …show more content…
The researchers also made a point that muscles that rupture usually happen in older adults and it was very rare for this to happen to someone that is twenty eight and was a former U.S. Navy technician. When the male went into the clinic and showed them his arm the muscle looked deformed and all of the muscle fibers were in a ball and the skin was bruised. The doctors found out that the rest of the shoulder was unharmed from the rupture and did not need any further examination. The operation consisted of a open bicep tenodesis and when they reattached the muscle the research team had found that the tendon showed signs of trauma and microscopic inflammation. These findings lead them to believe that the rupture was a cause of trauma to the tendon which was a rare. As their follow up they followed him into his journey of rehab and what types of thing that he was doing to recovery faster. There were statistics that showed that patients that underwent tenodesis made a full recovery and went back to the level of sport and activity that they were previously at. This being said, the male subject returned back to full work at around six weeks after the

N. SETHUMADHAVAN   EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Strategy is well explained as the effective use of well laid out plans to achieve success. It is no less of spectacle to attribute strategy to individual achievement, achievement from a company, a country or at the very least a non – financial institute to achieve strategic success. Ford Motor Company has in recent times lost its market share to emerging Asian companies such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Nissan. As a new landscape of economic might surfaces, new car stereotypes are emerging. Finding a place in these segments is proving difficult for Ford Motors and hence need to change its strategies. Hyper-competition combined with tough economic times has pushed Ford to the edge of insolvency. This paper examines the issues that plague the company while using published models to make analysis on how and why the problems occur to better understand their potential impact on the company’s sustainable competitive advantage. Recommendations will seek to give strategic solutions to address the issues identified earlier. This research isn’t structured upon models to identify, analyze and solve issues but rather looks at the core of the problems within Ford Motors...

...Journal of Economic Literature 2010, 48:4, 935–963 http:www.aeaweb.org/articles.php?doi=10.1257/jel.48.4.935 Quality Disclosure and Certification:  Theory and Practice David Dranove and Ginger Zhe Jin* This essay reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on quality disclosure and certification. After comparing quality disclosure with other quality assurance mechanisms and describing a brief history of quality disclosure, we address two sets of theoretical issues. First, why don’t sellers voluntarily disclose through a process of “unraveling” and, given the lack of unraveling, is it desirable to mandate seller disclosure? Second, when we rely on certifiers to act as the intermediary of quality disclosure, do certifiers necessarily report unbiased and accurate information? We further review empirical evidence on these issues, with a particular focus on healthcare, education, and finance. The empirical review covers quality measurement, the effect of third-party disclosure on consumer choice and seller behavior, as well as the economics of certifiers. The zip code community of 53218 is no exception. Some of those positive features of the 53218 community has prospective features such as its existing available clinics, multipurpose community centers, such as the Silver Spring Community Center, and numerous outreach programs through organizations including Growing Power and the Milwaukee Outreach Center. Unfortunately, it is still considered one of ten zip codes in the Milwaukee County designated in the “lower socioeconomic status” group as reported in the Milwaukee Health Report (Chen, et al., 2011). The lower SES group, including 53218, as a whole is at risk for (1) a growing rate of obesity related to a poor nutritional lifestyle, (2) a continually decreasing gynecological health among the female population between ages 12 and 19 related to a lack of enforced education and rising teen pregnancy-related issues, and (3) a consistently low level of neighborhood safety related to motor vehicle accidents and rising crime rates. Community Strengths The community of 53218 has three main areas of strength: (1) several available clinics, (2) an abundance...

...THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE • VOL. LVI, NO. 4 • AUGUST 2001 Investor Psychology and Asset Pricing DAVID HIRSHLEIFER* ABSTRACT The basic paradigm of asset pricing is in vibrant f lux. The purely rational approach is being subsumed by a broader approach based upon the psychology of investors. In this approach, security expected returns are determined by both risk and misvaluation. This survey sketches a framework for understanding decision biases, evaluates the a priori arguments and the capital market evidence bearing on the importance of investor psychology for security prices, and reviews recent models. The best plan is . . . to profit by the folly of others. — Pliny the Elder, from John Bartlett, comp. Familiar Quotations, 9th ed. 1901. IN THE MUDDLED DAYS BEFORE THE RISE of modern finance, some otherwisereputable economists, such as Adam Smith, Irving Fisher, John Maynard Keynes, and Harry Markowitz, thought that individual psychology affects prices.1 What if the creators of asset-pricing theory had followed this thread? Picture a school of sociologists at the University of Chicago proposing the Deficient Markets Hypothesis: that prices inaccurately ref lect all available information. A brilliant Stanford psychologist, call him Bill Blunte, invents the Deranged Anticipation and Perception Model ~or DAPM!, in which proxies for market misvaluation are used to predict security returns. Imagine the euphoria when researchers discovered that these mispricing proxies...

...The Impact of Non-audit Services on Capital Markets Seunghan Nam Ph.D. Candidate Stern School of Business New York University New York, NY 10012 snam@stern.nyu.edu Preliminary Draft 7 January 2005 Abstract The framers of the Sarbanes–Oxley Act (SOA) presume that non-audit services lower the quality of financial statements, so they have prohibited auditors from offering most non-audit services. In addition, regulators believe that non-audit services (NAS) may cause the auditor to be perceived as “dependent” in appearance, thus increasing information risk, even if they have no impact on the quality of financial statements. I investigate two hypotheses using pre-SOA data. First, I ask whether the proportion of non-audit services fees to total fees has a positive or negative association with the ability of financial statements to predict a firm’s future cash flows, which can be considered a measure of the quality of the statements. Second, I ask whether the proportion has a negative or positive association with the cost of capital and the bid/ask spread, controlling for the predictive ability. The cost of capital and the bid/ask spread serve as proxies of information risk. Contrary to the proponents of prohibiting NAS, I find that the proportion of non-audit services fees to total fees has a positive association with the predictive ability. If we control for the quality of financial statements, non-audit services still have a negative association...
