BALAGTASAN
Lakandiwa
Isang paksang sa panahon ay talagang nababagay
Ang sa ngayo‘y itatampok sa ngalan ng Balagtasan;

...sorrowful wail of the weeping La Llorona? The mythical urban legend, La Llorona, hunts for and captures wandering children by quiet and lonesome rivers. She forever will be searching for children that resemble her own to mourn their grieving deaths. The La Llorona has forever done so after her own death by suicide in the same river as her beloved children. The reason for her wailing and searching for her children for so long is because she was denied at the gates of heaven and will not be sent into the afterlife until she finds her children that are unknowingly already in the afterlife and that she will never find them. The La Llorona has been around for many centuries and has been known to wail a horrible weeping that exclaims, “Ay, mi hijos!”, or “Oh, my children!” The La Llorona has been reported in many states and U.S. territories along the southern border of the America’s. The La Llorona...

Malinche, the La Strong Woman

...Malinche; the Latin American Strong Woman In the interpretations of the Nauhua figure, Malinalli through history, she has been cast in several roles. These include but are not limited to; * “Dona Marina,” the great lady of Hernan Cortes. * “Malintzin,” the noble prisoner/captive of Cortes. * “La Malinche,” the embodiment of treachery against the Latin people. While there are many portrayals of her, there is an underlying theme in all of them. That she is a compelling force in events despite the traditional roles of women of the time. For example when comparing Laura Esquival’s, “Malinche” Malinalli variant to the one found in Gary Jennings “Aztec,” readers will find two different portrayals her but with the same dominance. Due to this extraordinary puissance, it leads me believe that she is a strong woman. Due to the diversity of works that showcase her I will be focusing on the following two representations of her as seen in Esquival’s novel, “Malinche” and Jose Limon’s ballet, “La Malinche.” Let’s begin by examining Laura Esquival’s interpretation in “La Malinche.” Written in 2006, I believe this novel characterizes Malinalli as a strong woman. Furthermore, as an ambassador and a genius. She is a woman struggling between the remnants of her native Aztec civilization and the culture of the invading Spaniards. Through these trials and tribulations, her character grows from the naïve slave girl to the mother of a new civilization. She didn’t begin as a strong...

Viva La Vida

...Viva la Vida! by Frida Kahlo Introduction Painting has always been a way for artists to display the reality in which they live, regardless of whether it is an inner reality, consisting of personal experiences, emotions and feelings, or external reality formed by other people, animals, nature, or other thing. Frida Kahlo is an artist whose work is the result of a reflection of her inner reality, woven from her feelings and emotions. The pain and suffering, which she endured in her life, not only hardened her character, but also largely determined the features of her work. Frida Kahlo's creativity is unique due to the fact that it reflects not only the unique life story of the artist, full of mental and physical sufferings, but also demonstrates the spiritual qualities of Frida, such as fortitude, endurance, willingness to fight for life. For this reason, the study of the creativity of the Mexican artist involves an appeal to the facts of her biography. It helps to understand and grasp the specifics of her creations, each of which is capable to communicate with the audience in the language of love, suffering, and hopes of life. In this paper, one of my favorite artworks, namely Viva la Vida! (1954) by Frida Kahlo in connection with the life of the artist will be analyzed. The Facts from the Biography of Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo (1907-1953) is known worldwide as one of the most dramatic figures in the history of art: at the age of 18 she got in a terrible car accident that...

Arnolfini Double Portrait and Las Meninas

...Renaissance and Baroque art are distinct time periods and artists in their respective eras created artwork that differed from the other period. Consequently, art produced in separate time frames are likely to vary from one another. Upon first glance, Jan Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Double Portrait made in 1434 and Diego Velazquez’s Las Meninas made in 1656 do not look similar. Although the two paintings have more than two centuries between them, Velazquez makes many references to Van Eyck’s painting and therefore creates a relationship between the two. This relationship is visible when directly comparing the two works of art side by side and similarities begin to emerge. Arnolfini Double Portrait and Las Meninas share many characteristics including foreground composition, mirror reflections, and background references that can be seen after careful analysis despite the initial difference in time, location, and influence of the two artists. With two centuries separating Jan Van Eyck and Diego Velazquez, the primary differences between the two artists are time, location, and influence of their own specific lives. Arnolfini Double Portrait was painted during the middle of the Renaissance when naturalism was highly favored in art. In this naturalistic view, van Eyck painted what he saw in a lifelike manner; his subjects are brightly colored, physiologically accurate, and their faces are detailed with shadow, which depict structure. All these characteristics paved the way for future naturalism...

...Development of Las Vegas Did you know that 38.9 million people visit Las Vegas each year? Las Vegas gets much attention from all over the world not only in America, but this attraction took many decades to develop. This is the journey from how the grasses of “the meadows,” turned into the gambling world of Las Vegas. Las Vegas, Nevada is well known for the casinos and the large hotels, it is also known for drive-thru weddings. Millions of people visit Vegas every year, some to gamble and others just to have fun in the city. Although some people forget, Vegas took many years of construction and development to get where it is today. Billions of dollars were spent to show America that Las Vegas is the best city in the world. The more people that came to Vegas meant more money for the city, and that money was put to a good place. The money made more hotels and casino’s meant more jobs for thousands of people. The first person to enter Las Vegas was Rafael Rivera. At the time Rivera had named the valley Las Vegas, “the meadows,” because of the watered grasses. Later Octavius Gass, took over and renamed the area “Los Vegas Rancho.” Gambling became illegal in the state of Nevada in 1910 but soon legalized in 1931. Later the same year construction had begun on the Hoover Dam, which brought thousands of jobs east of the city. On Fremont Street, casinos and showgirls venue opened to attract the construction workers. In 1936 the Hoover Dam was complete, powered by cheap flashing signs...

Las Vegas Sands Essay

...Executive Summary Las Vegas Sands Corporation (“LVS”) is arguably the world’s premier casino resort operator. With its operations in Las Vegas, Macau, Pennsylvania, and its new development in Singapore and Europe LVS, is now well-positioned to capture a large slice of what is becoming an increasingly huge pie. They are the biggest company in its industry with a USD market cap of 35.1 billion as of 2011. The casino operator has been a pioneer in opening new markets in Asia, and will continue to aggressively focus on a variety of other development opportunities where it’s needed. However, LVS has faced significant financial challenges since the economic recession began in the fourth quarter of 2008. Among the significant ones is its large amount of long term debt currently at 9.58 billion. Las Vegas Sands Corporation has strategically sold some of their “non-core” assets such as the Venetian retail mall, and its Shoppes at the Palazzo in order to remain compliance with its credit covenants. With this said, there are now in the position to return to profitable operations with its Asian pipeline and its new development project in Europe with the assumption that upon completing these projects it will generate enough revenue to get rid of all their debts. In addition, to their debt issues are the ongoing lawsuits that have brought a threat from government officials questioning how the company conducts its domestic and foreign operations. This is an issue of growing importance especially...
