...HOW TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO WAS GOVERNED BEFORE INDEPENDENCE Our Nation’s Attainment of Independence in 1962 marked the end of colonial rule that had started during the 16th century under the aegis of Spain and had continued when the British captured Trinidad. In the meantime, Tobago had its own uneven political history, changing hands from one European power to another whilst having its own bicameral elective legislature from as early as 1768. As Crown Colony governance became tighter from the mid-19th century that melancholy isle was deprived of its bicameral legislature in 1874 and in 1877 was made a purely nominative, one-chambered Crown Colony legislature. In 1889, Tobago was united administratively with Trinidad in order to reduce British expenses in the Caribbean and in 1899 the noose was further tightened when that colony was made a ward of Trinidad and Tobago. From the beginning of the 20th century, Tobago joined Trinidad in advocating freedom from colonial rule, becoming an integral part of the achievement on Independence in 1962. NATIONAL FLAG The flag of Trinidad and Tobago was adopted on August 31, 1962, and consists of a red background with a white and black band diagonally placed across the upper left corner to the bottom right corner. The two white stripes are symbolic of the bountiful sea, the red represents the people, and black represents their hard work and strength. COAT OF ARMS The shield of the coat of arms contains the same colors as the nation's flag...

...The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is an organisation of 15 Caribbean nations (see chart N°1), 12 islands and 3 larger coastal nations in and around the Caribbean sea, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean , The Gulf of Mexico, The United States and South and Central America. This community was established by the Treaty of Chaguaramas which came into effect on August 1973 and which was signed at first by only 4 countries : Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. CARICOM was built in order to promote an economic integration and a real cooperation between its members, in order to coordinate foreign policy and in order to ensure that the benefits of integration are equally shared. Its aim was to take part in the international trade scene . In 1989, 13 of the 15 members of the CARICOM decided to change the strategy and to become a single market economy (CSME) so as to better and deeper integrate the members , to widen the membership and to expand the economic mass of the Caribbean community, and to progressively insert the region in the global trading and economic system. Almost 40 years after the creation of the CARICOM, we could ask ourselves about the efficiency of this trade bloc, about its successes and failures. It seems that the CARICOM managed to reach some of its objectives but that its expansion was blocked by several important negative factors. Let’s try to understand what happened. As we said, , the creation of the CARICOM and the CSME...

...relation to Chutney music, women are seen as controlling and nagging and just bad. Drawing from the music men seem to believe that women should be at home and engage in activities such as cooking, cleaning or simply awaiting the man patiently. They hardly believe that women should be drinking alcohol or partying much. Through the music men are more seen as the outgoing ones who don't need women. In many various songs by different artists it is dominant that after men get married or in a relationship they begin to actually regret getting involved with a girl and they show that they have preference for alcohol and 'liming' (which is doing out going things such as being around other male friends). In general, this type of music is dominant - In Trinidad and Tobago you would hear cars driving in the road and playing these songs loudly and when taking to friends they quote lyrics from the songs. Even around girls, the males who engage in listening to these songs would actually tell girls things such as ' I go be single forever' or ' Women like to complain too much' or 'Women are too difficult'. About last year or so, the song ' Single Forever ' sang by KI was a popular song and locals of many different races would claim for this to be their motto. Boys and men would update their Facebook status to ' Who needs women? I go be single forever' or things relating to having several women rather than one woman to be faithful...

...the Bed” to a larger or smaller extent: Short time span: About two-thirds of the short story takes place during one single day in Brackley’s life. The remainder covers some subsequent weeks. Few characters: There are only two characters in the short story: Brackley and Teena. One central incident: The central incident is Teena’s arrival in London. Conflict: The intrusion of Teena into Brackley’s seemingly uncomplicated life in London. Turning point/surprise: The main turning point is at the end when Teena reveals that her aunt is coming over to stay with them. 2 2a The short story is set in post-war London before 1962. There is a reference to the Colonial Office in London which handled matters related to the British colonies. Trinidad and Tobago was a British colony until 1962. 2b Brackley is the protagonist of the short story. He is a young Tobagonian who has come to London in search of work. Being a Caribbean he realizes that it is difficult to find decent work and accommodation in a white society such as London. He seems to have resigned to his fate, which has often been so typical of many immigrants from the colonies. When encountering such challenges, it is easy to become passive, lazy and apathetic. He also understands that the English do not care and that he has to rely on himself. In this environment he also tries to adapt to the British society by e.g. playing rummage and putting emphasis on material objects such as the bed. In relation to Teena he shows...

...Death, dying and other ethical dilemmas Anand Chatoorgoon University of Phoenix Death, dying and other ethical dilemmas are issues that all Intensive Care Units (ICUs) throughout the world have to face and address. In the Current Opinion in Critical Care, Vol 16, No 6, December 2010, p. 640, Dixon-Woods and Bosk, writing on the topic of “Death, dying and other ethical dilemmas” under the journal’s section of ‘Ethical, legal and organizational issues in the ICU’, have stated that “Recent ethnographic work suggests that ethical dilemmas associated with end-of-life care in ICU clearly persist, even if clinicians are now more open about patients’ chances of surviving. An Australian study identified how decisions and actions made outside the ICU—such as proceeding with surgical procedures with very poor prognosis or admitting moribund patients who had sustained severe respiratory or cardiac arrest—led to a higher than expected rate of non-booked admissions. Staff believed these to be the result of futile interventions by staff outside the ICU that then resulted in ICU staff having to manage the patient and family through the dying process. ICU staff believed that this practice was detrimental to families by offering false hope of recovery, and that they were left to ‘clear up the unfinished work of medical staff’. Other studies have also documented the problems faced by staff confronted by patients whose potential for recovery is, at best, marginal, or when patients’...

...Clint Cave POLY SCI Prof. Fitzpatrick 4/23/13 Term Paper Final Country: Trinidad and Tobago Trinidad and Tobago is a developing nation in the Caribbean composed of two islands. The islands gained independence from the British in 1962. The country is one of the most prosperous in the Caribbean, largely as a result of petroleum and natural gas industries. Tourist travel is mostly to the smaller of the two sister islands, Tobago. Tourist facilities are widely available. Calypso music and steel drum bands feature in carnival celebrations on the larger island. Relaxed and peaceful in comparison to its densely-populated sister, Tobago attracts diving enthusiasts and nature lovers. The island is self-governing. Trinidad & Tobago is a beautiful island and it has some of the most amazing tourist sites. One site is The Aripo Caves they are located in the northern tip of Trinidad, it is a must-see for the adventurous tourist. The caves are home to oilbirds, a rare species of nocturnal birds that fly in the dark using echolocation, just like bats do. The caves are also home to a large population of bats. Reaching the limestone caves requires an extensive hike through a dense jungle like forest, as trails are often overgrown. The caves themselves are rich in stalactites and stalagmites. You can reach the entrance to the cave and walk a few feet into the caves on your own. The forest is especially beautiful in February, when the mountain immortelle trees are in bloom, showing...
