...DEPARTAMENTO DE INGLÉS SEDE REGIONAL GRECIA LICENCIATURA EN LA ENSEÑANZA DEL INGLÉS LIN-08 INVESTIGACIÓN EDUCATIVA “LA VACA” WRITTEN REPORT BY Daython Winston I - 2016 The book “La vaca” is definitely one of the best stories for self-development and personal growth. It is a story to get rid of mediocrity, false beliefs, delusion, excuses and even procrastination. “Vacas” are defined as anything that is related to negative thinking that we create for ourselves, to justify or excuse our own incapacity to keep moving forward. (Cruz, 2003, p. 8) Under these circumstances, this story may not only be suitable for a specific person, but rather everyone who is willing to take the first step to move away from his or her comfort zone. In fact, this is one of the most difficult decisions. People usually feel very peaceful in their comfort zone. Many of them even does not consider it a problem at all, and this makes one of the biggest “vaca” in any area of a person`s life. (Cruz, 2003, p. 12) Most of these type of people...

...It is often said that the tradition of American generosity and compassion began with the Native Americans. This is prominent in the report “La Relacion” by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, where he details his experience with the Karankawa people and their generosity in his time of need. Cabeza de Vaca and his men fell to the mercy of the Karankawa people on Galveston Island, when he was on the brink of death, and starvation had its clutches on his crew. However the generosity and kindness of the Native Americans allowed the emaciated men to prevail during trying times. Cabeza de Vaca writes “The Indians appeared… bringing an abundance of fish and of certain roots”(Vaca 74). Even without a prior relationship, the Native Americans helped the desperate...

...Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was born around 1490 and lived in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. His father was Don Francisco de Vera and his mother was Dona Teresa Cabeza de Vaca. Alvar was one of six children. Cabeza de Vaca was first employed by the military and left to Italy where he would start his service in 1511. He was under Charles the fifth’s rule when he and an army of men fought the battle of Ravenna before returning to Spain in 1512. After the Battle of Ravenna when Cabeza de Vaca went back to spain he ended up working for the duke of medina sidonia. His service for the duke took up many years. In 1520 Cabeza de Vaca got married to a lady by the name of Maria Marmolejo but he rarely spoke of her. On June 17 1527 Panfilo Narvaez was sent to conquer and colonize in Florida. Aiding Panfilo was a crew of 400 men in five ships all moving toward Florida. Their goal was to conquer and govern from the palmas river to the cape of Florida. Cabeza de Vaca was appointed treasurer and second in command of this expedition....

...Cabeza de Vaca Sure you’ve taken family vacations, you’ve maybe even dared to travel to a different country, but so did Cabeza de Vaca. Only, his travels weren’t exactly like a vacation. Cabeza’s long and treacherous journey across what was soon-to-be-America was more referred to as an expedition. An expedition to conquer and colonize Florida with 600 other men, but the plan later turned sour and it turned into a fight for survival. Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca’s surname was granted the meaning of “Cow Head.” Since we can’t be sure when Cabeza de Vaca was born, it is a safe assumption to form the hypothesis that he was born any time period ranging from 1487-1492. Most think he was born somewhere around 1491. One fact that we know for sure is that he was born in Jerez de Frontera, Spain. Orphaned as an older boy, he later joined the Spaniard military as a young adult. He worked his way up to the positions of Treasurer and First Lieutenant for an expedition to conquer and colonize all the land between Florida and Rio de las Palmas, which in present day is located near Tampico, Mexico. Panfilo de Narvaez was in charge of the expedition. With five ships and about 600 men the expedition left Spain in 1527. The five ships sailed until...

...historical narratives is to report as accurately as possible what happened at each particular place and time in history. But each of the writers in this unit (De Vaca, Bradford, and Equiano) went beyond merely reporting the facts; they had other, more personal reasons for writing what they did. Each of them had a personal agenda. Equiano’s personal agenda in The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano was to shame his white audience into abolishing the slave trade by describing the horrible events that took place on the ship. While he did state facts about the ship, Equiano described personal experiences to persuade the audience more. For example, Equiano describes the smell of the hold as being “…so intolerably loathsome, that it was dangerous to...
