Judy Baca has combined art with community activism for thirty years. She is credited for the great work of art called the Great Wall of Los Angeles that has taken place over the years, in which it is consider the largest painting standing 14 feet tall and stretches for half a mile long. She had the help of many young troubled youth each separated into multi-ethnic groups to work together on the painting. By her letting them help with the painting she was offering them much needed work skills. The chance to create this piece was offered to Baca in 1974 by the Army Corps of Engineers in an effort to make flood control channel look better. To create such a large project this has required much support and assistance. The greatest support has come from government agencies, foundations, and corporations. Juvenile Justice funding was the largest funding for the project from the beginning since it was helping the juveniles. The way the process works for each section of the Mural is that supervisors will be hired to interview and recruit youth from ages 14 to 21. It takes a whole year to organize, research, and complete a section. The social implications to create this mural require a great deal of support and tolerance to work with different ethnic backgrounds. The economic implications require money to be raised to pay for the hiring the supervisors, artists, teachers, and the youth who will execute the painting. The economic requirement has been achieved through the years by fundraisers, the government, corporations, and the generosity of individuals who give donations. The political implications are that there is a need for governmental agencies to support and allow a work of art to happen in public.

Vincent Van Gogh was and artist who lived in Europe during the late eighteen hundreds and died at the age of thirty. His paintings during his time were heavily criticized for not being up to expectations of artists. He started out with drawings and water colors and later tried to experiment with different mediums because of the negative feedback. Some of the forces that led people to have bad feelings for his artwork are that they felt they lacked livelihood, or were too dark, or that they lacked beauty. Some of the things in his work seemed off like the lines that should be straight are curvy, no sense of space in some of his paintings, and the rough lines in his paintings that portray color, and this is probably why some may have not like his work. He has contributions to the art world and is probably most influential in expressionism of modern art. He was daring for the art he did and set a different standard to some artist, in a lot of ways he has big a big inspiration for artist to become artist because he made it fun.

We’ll be exploring the world of statistics from a business perspective this week, allowing you to practice your skills with descriptive statistics, formatting, graphs, and regression analysis. As discussed in the lesson, the value of statistics lies in the ability to analyze data more effectively for the purpose of improving decision making. You might have heard the expression that “statistics never lie, and only liars use statistics”. There is an obvious truth in this statement, in that, depending on the questions being asked and the data collected, the statistics can skew reality. For example, it is true that as ice cream sales increase, accidents at swimming pools increase. Does this mean that the more ice cream that is sold, the more accidents it causes (correlation/causation)? Of course not, but the data, if not interpreted correctly, could lead to false conclusions. It just so happens that both are correlated to a rise in temperature in the summertime. The hotter it is outside, the more kids flock to swimming pools, leading to more accidents, and the more ice cream is sold. So you see, although statistics are vital in the world of decision making, you have to be wise, and ask the right questions. Software...

To provide context for the analysis, a history of DSS is presented which focuses on the evolution of a number of sub-groupings of research and practice: personal DSS, group support systems, negotiation support systems, intelligent DSS, knowledge management-based DSS, executive information systems/business intelligence, and data warehousing. To understand the state of DSS research an empirical investigation of published DSS research is presented. This investigation is based on the detailed analysis of 1,020 DSS articles published in 14 major journals from 1990 to 2003. The analysis found that DSS publication has been falling steadily since its peak in 1994 and the current publication rate is at early 1990s levels. Other findings include that personal DSS and group support systems dominate research activity and data warehousing is the least published type of DSS...
