Lab #1 “Who has the same solid that I have?”
Abstract
Different Physical and chemical tests were performed on 10 numbered unknown solids and the results of all tests were compared as a class to try and determine which groups had the same unknown solids based on similarities in properties. It was found that my given unknown solid #11 shared similar properties with the unknown solid #1. A side by side analysis of the reactivity test in which Hydrochloric acid (HCI), lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was added to three separate samples of the compounds unknown #1 and #11 aqueous solutions. The results for both unknowns were identical, leading to the conclusion that my unknown solid #11 was the same unknown solid as #1.
Introduction
When conducting research it is important to be comfortable communicating your results with other researchers so that they can be further analyzed and compared with the results of other research experiments. Another large part of conducting research is to be comfortable determining, describing and comparing chemical and physical properties of compounds. Many compounds can look very similar, but have drastically different chemical properties, so it is important to know which tests can be performed on a compound to help determine what it is, or what it is not.
In this experiment 2 sets of six unknown solid compounds were put into small jars and labeled with the numbers 1-12, numbers 4, 6 and 8 were not used. Each lab group was given one unknown solid and told to determine the samples properties through various testing. Physical characteristics were observed, by using a magnifying glass to view a small amount of the sample. Relative solubility was found by mixing a small amount of the unknown solid with deionized water. Electrical conductivity was measured by using a conductivity meter and noting the amount of bars on the meter turned red, with more bars indicating more conductivity. The ph of the unknown was found with ph paper. The reactivity was observed when adding Hydrochloric acid (HCI), lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to three separate samples of the compounds aqueous solution. After adding the last solution of NaOH ph paper was held over the solution to see if ammonia was being produced. The color change of the flame on a bunsen burner when the solid was added was also observed, as well as if the unknown solid melted when placed on a scoopula on top of the flame. The goal of the experiment was to identify the other group in class that shared the same unknown solid. This was achieved by collecting the properties of each solid from each group together as a class and then hypothesizing who shared the same solid by linking together unknowns with similar properties. Side by side analysis was then done with the hypothesized same solids in which one of the previous tests that produced a unique result from the other solids was redone, to confirm that the solids were indeed the same.

Results
Unknown #11 was observed as being colorless and in crystalline form, soluble, none conductive in either form, and acidic. Its Reactivity with HCI was a slight amount of yellow was observed, with Pb a bright yellow was observed and with NaOH a ph paper held over the solution turned blu/green, indicating that ammonia was being produced.
As taken from table 1 it was hypothesized that my unknown solid #11 was the same unknown solid as #1, with similar properties for all tests, accept for the conductivity of the aqueous solution, the flame test being and the reaction with NaOH being different. It was then discussed between groups and decided to do side by side analysis of the unknowns by performing the reactivity test because its unique reaction of turning yellow would distinguish them from other unknowns. The results for all three reactivity tests were the same for both unknowns as shown in table 2.

Discussion
There are similarities from the original tests completed by the entire class shown in table 1 between unknown #1 and unknown #11. In the side by analysis it was found that when Hydrochloric acid, lead nitrate and sodium hydroxide are added to both unknown #1 and unknown #11 they react in similar ways, as shown in table two. With those results it was concluded unknown solid #1 and unknown solid #11 were the same solid. in table 1 the differences between data for the two substances were the conductivity of the solution, the reactivity of NaOH and the flame color. The conductivity test for the solution for unknown #11 could have been measured with a non working conductivity meter, and so should have been measured with more then one meter, to make sure the correct results were given. The reactivity test for NaOH on unknown #1 was not done with ph paper, which is why the original result was listed as none. It was discussed that when doing the flame test it would be better to have a slightly wet unknown placed into the flame, to produce color, this was not done with unknown #11, and so could account for the differences in results for that test between #1 and #11.
