...Ladies and Gentlemen Project Paper Shantrice Scott Strayer University Dr. Hunsucker HUM111 November 24, 2014 Many students set goals with the hope that their achievements may help them be accepted into their chosen college. Unfortunately, they often put too much emphasis on one area and do not take part in a wide range of activities. Bewildered college applicants often say, "I've had a perfect average since I started junior high. How could they reject me?" What they do not realize is that schools are interested in more than just intellectual achievements. Others find themselves saying, "I am the best baseball player in my school. Why did I get rejected?" This also proves that college acceptance is not based on an athletic single area of activity, whether academic, musical, or Statement of Purpose. (Allen 1996) I firmly believe that it is important to be well-rounded, taking part in both challenging and interesting activities instead of just focusing on athletics or academics. I understand that proving oneself to be an outstanding athlete requires much skill development and hours of practice, and this is true for demonstrating intellectual ability, too. But a truly capable person balances many activities. Taking part in school, athletics, music, community service, extra-curricular activities, academic clubs, social clubs, hobbies and spending time with friends and family are the qualities that describe a truly well-rounded person. Sometimes students' ideas about...

...Essay – ”Ladies and Gentlemen” Humans… such a passionate word really, a both negatively and positively way to be described. Like “Well I’m only human” or “It’s because you are human!” An apology, a reason. The image of an actual human being, the ‘humanity’ we are so proud to posses, is somewhat distorted in this short story. But then again, maybe not so much! A kind of distorted distortion! As the captain nonchalantly passes on, from the children of the passengers, “Your children have asked me to assure you that they do love you – but circumstances have intervened” or when he off handedly says, “As your captain, about to bid you farewell, let me say I am sympathetic to you situation…” and then he goes on, talking about how he is sympathetic while clearly not sounding like it. It is told as if, the humanity normally present is only an awareness, merely put aside, ignored. Maybe understood but not felt. As a reader I was even more surprised, or perhaps outraged, throughout the story, when it became apparent just how non-caring this captain was, while telling the passengers of the reason of their flight. How this is indeed going to be their end. How he really prefer it if they wouldn’t interrupt him while talking! Interrupt him? For gods sake he was telling the poor people of how they were probably going to die! In detail! And that was what set him off! Or earlier when he swiftly explained that if the ‘ladies and gentlemen’ did not cooperate, the stewards would be inclined...

...The sole factor that separated Tadeusz Borowski from the gas chambers when he was at Auschwitz—beyond the fact that he wasn’t Jewish—was his cooperation with the S.S. soldiers. He assisted the Nazis in eliminating thousands of Jewish men, women, and children. “This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen” ultimately uses the narrator to convey Borowski’s message of what really happened during the Holocaust. This also explains why the story is in first person: it reflects the author’s own experiences. Borowski’s writing is quite crude: harsh yet realistic. Readers cannot judge Borowski negatively; he was as much of a victim as the people coming off the transports. Throughout “This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen,” Borowski portrays the internal struggle that each prisoner faces: aid the S.S. soldiers in unloading transports and sending Jewish people to their deaths, or die themselves? Neither do the prisoners have weapons nor the rations to sustain themselves. “They can’t run out of people, or we’ll starve to death in this blasted camp. All of us live on what they bring,” Henri states to the narrator (Charters 152). Keeping themselves alive is of great importance. How can they even think of revolting? The language used by the narrator is also enough to prove that in no way did Borowski condone any of the things he was forced to do: “It is the camp law: people going to their death must be deceived to the very end. This is the only permissible form of charity” (156). The narrator...

...Ladies and gentlemen of the Democratic Party, we meet today to discuss the current issues and the actions we must take surrounding the Reconstruction led by the Radical Republicans of congress. President Johnson and President Lincoln has both proposed the Ten Percent Plan for our benefit. It offers us amnesty for our crimes and also gives us a chance to rebuild. Congress however, is filled with corrupted men who wish to demolish our economy. Today we are here to discuss what we want in the Reconstruction of the south. First, we wish to be admitted back into the union without severe punishment from the government. It was bad enough when we lost the war and our lifestyles were forced to change. However, the congress is set on punishing us, as...

...Themes in This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen The Holocaust was a depressing time in history that caused many people grief, anguish, and fear. Many people from the Holocaust have written about their experiences and trials they faced not only in concentration camps, but in their lives living under Hitler’s rule. Prisoners in the concentration camps would often have journals hidden so others could read about their lives. Surviving several concentration camps while in his twenties the author of This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen, Tadeusz Borowski, faced difficult times. Often taking extreme measures to ensure his survival, he was able to live at the expense of others’ lives. While living among the other prisoners of the concentration camp, Birkenau, Borowski does some seemingly unthinkable things. He was one of the more privileged prisoners because of the job he kept. When new transports would come in, he would take their belongings which included food, clothing, and supplies. The people would be sent immediately to the gas chambers, and the supplies taken had to be given back to the guards for upkeep of the camps, but the men who unloaded the prisoners got to keep the food. “Canada” as it was called among the prisoners, symbolized wealth and survival because this was where all the clothing and valuables were taken to distribute to Germany (Borowski 1454). The men working to unload the cattle cars were also like Canada...

...This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen: A human’s instinct for survival. Throughout time, the rights of individuals have been ignored People should be entitled to freedom and equal rights. As stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everybody is born free and equal. The declaration also states, that no human being should be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading punishments. In Tadeusz Boworski’s novel, “This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentleman” the audience is shown the deprivation of human rights. Tadek, the story’s narrator, who was not a Jew, but a polish poet suffering from depression. Due to his disorder, Tadek is considered to be a political prisoner. He then changes his mind-set due to the changing environment, in which he must survive in. With an absence of morality, he shows that when placed in jeopardous situations, the will to survive destroys humanity and morals. The reader is submerged into the grim world of the Dachau and Auschwitz concentration camps, where non-Jewish prisoners live a life of luxury as opposed to their Jewish counterparts, where prisoners turn on one another, losing their morality for survival while the human psyche is challenged by imprisonment. A vast majority of Holocaust literature is written in the view of a Jewish prisoner, however, in This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen, the reader is given an appalling view of from the eyes of a polish political prisoner. The story’s narrator is part of the Kommando – the...

...Ladies and Gentlemen Abstract While many believe that the idea of chivalry is dead, and that noble ladies and gentlemen are things of past, and you may think that you can only see a man hold a door open for a lady at a renaissance festival, I know a few people who might disagree. Ladies and Gentlemen Many people believe that etiquette is nothing more than the art of trying to catch someone using the incorrect fork at a dinner party. They however are mistaken, as etiquette has served as a code of social behavior for centuries, starting with the nobles, and the idea of ladies, gentlemen courtier. Although few people think of etiquette at any time except on the occasion of their wedding, we all however mostly practice it every day, often as a matter of routine. Though formal and elaborate manners have always been required for life in the Royal Court, but are these ideas of ladies and gentlemen an out dated notion, or do more people than you would think still believe in this way of life. When considering the definitions of a lady or gentlemen, you would most likely thing of a lady as a well-mannered and considerate woman with high standards of proper behavior, and a gentleman as a man of gentle or noble birth or superior social position, or something very similar to the definition of a lady. Etiquette as we think of it was established in the Versailles court of French King Louis XIV. There was a large circle of courtiers, ladies and gentlemen whose main occupation...

...were selected for this survey; two gentlemen and a lady. The two gentlemen interviewed are in their freshman year, and the lady is a junior. They were surveyed about what they were wearing. In this survey, students were asked if their style changed from high school to college, why they were wearing what they were wearing at that particular moment, and if they thought that their appearance mattered in this environment. The styles of all the surveyed individuals varied greatly. They were asked if they changed their wardrobe from high school to college. The gentlemen both said no, because it was too expensive and they liked what they wore in high school. The lady surveyed said she had to, “style down” because she liked expensive clothes and couldn't afford what she wanted on a college budget. When asked the second question, all responses were very similar. They just woke up and put some clothes on. The lady that was surveyed said that most college kids do just that, and the longer that you are in school, the less you will care. It seemed to the surveyor that the gentlemen were perhaps better dressed than the lady and that they put more effort into getting ready then what she did. Appearance in this environment seemed to vary for everyone surveyed. The lady surveyed said that she had class where she was required to dress up on certain days because she would be in front of the class, and had to have a professional appearance. The gentlemen seemed to not care because they think...

...point was about the term “ladies and gentlemen.” It would be easy to think of upper class women in flashy dresses and extravagant hats and men in tailcoats and top hats when talking about ladies and gentlemen. However, one of my goals when using the terms is to make their definitions much more than mere appearance, if appearance at all. This modernization of the terms helps bring the definition into the current century and throw away the traditional and very close-minded definition. It is for this reason that I believe being a lady or gentleman is based on personality, how a person treats others, I speak for most people who use the term “ladies and gentlemen” in reference to a person’s conduct, not a person’s class, social standing, race, sexuality. Some, when faced with the terms “ladies and gentlemen,” will immediately assume the worst by using the outdated definitions. Some will also dig for reasons to label those who use “ladies and gentlemen”. In labeling us this way, these people do not facilitate any sort of progress for the terms or for any sort of unity for women, or men, ladies or gentleman. We live where we ought to not judge people by the color of their skin, their class, gender, or sexuality, with all of this, there are still groups who refuse to take off their blinders. Ladies and Gentleman, now there is a saying that has been with us for a long time, but what does it really mean and where did it come from? Let’s start with the ladies as we all have been known...

...Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentlemen of the Tweed Heads Art Exhibition. My name is Ashlea Wharley, and I would like to take this opportunity and thank you for having me today. This morning/afternoon I will be explaining my interpretation of what a hero’s journey truly is. Along with that I will be showing you this extraordinary but yet, so very time consuming work of art I have created. As you see Ladies and Gentlemen in my opinion or understanding of what a hero’s journey is; it’s best described as a typical adventure of a hero, the person who sets out an adventure and accomplishes countless endeavours on behalf of a group, tribe or civilisation. The model I have created that you see before your eyes Ladies and Gentlemen is my understanding and explanation of a hero’s journey within my idea for my related text, The Vampire Diaries. I have intentionally created a 3D construction with using a white tree metal jewellery frame. I constructed it this way because the white metal tree itself symbolises a tree of life. A tree of life ladies and gentlemen have been used in the notion in science, religion, philosophy and mythology. In this case, the tree of life can be related back to my related text on how Elena in… The Vampire Diaries gets introduced into the mythological world. You will also see there is a silver necklace with an oval shaped locket in a pink jewellery box. This necklace symbolises a locket that Elena is given in the Vampire Diaries by Stefan her Vampire boyfriend...
