Lafayette’s moto “Cur Non” are words I could see myself living by, “Why not?” a question I ask myself daily. Lafayette became the choice for me because these are the types of people whom I would want to collaborate with and the type of setting I can see myself in. I wanted my chance to give my talents to the community and help define Lafayette.

There’s a difference between being busy and being engaged. Lafayette comes alive each day with the energy of students who are deeply engaged in their academic, co-curricular and extracurricular explorations. In response to the prompt below, …show more content…
I redefine my question: “Where have I lost you?” Their hands go flying in the air. I am at one of my jobs, teaching at the Advanced Math Academy. However, teaching has never felt like hard work. Instead, it’s been one of the most refreshing parts of my week. Seeing the way a student’s face lights up the moment they finally comprehend the concept, or the smile appear when they get a correct answer, makes me feel larger than life. In that moment, I am proud of my students and my job. It reminds me of the reason why I love to teach: to help someone else understand, and in turn, appreciate my favorite subject just a little

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. It signaled a cynicism...
