...According to Lake and von Baeyer’s article, “Tips for Successful Students”; “A” students have qualities that set them apart from others, among them are curiosity, attitude, attendance and thus resulting in a prosperous learning experience. I am willing to try anything and go back for seconds especially if I’ve learned something and it is fun. I have always been one of those people who ask why? From the time I was a little girl my mom would say why do you always ask WHY? I’m curious about my world. When I’m learning new material I approach it as an opportunity. If for some reason I am having trouble, I ask myself why and how can I get the answer I need. I am also a firm believer in goal setting. We need short-term goals; it’s nice when we can celebrate! Why not celebrate often? Of course we need long term or big goals as well, more celebrating and then sharing what we’ve learned and have accomplished with others to make the world better. Perhaps I need to remember not to overthink. Each person leaners in a different manner, therefore I myself need to remember that my instructor and I are a team. I do look forward to working with other nursing students, collaborating our efforts in order to complete our projects. We all come from different backgrounds and have a multitude of experience. I feel that the sharing of information and resources is an exciting way for all of us to learn. Finally, the one skill I need to re-aquire...

On the second part of the article there is a statement as follows "Successful students can be distinguished from the average student by their attitudes and behavior. Below are some profiles that typically distinguish between an "A" student and a "C" student. Where do you fit in this scheme? I think this is a great question to pose. ...I cannot say that I have one specific characteristic that will help me succeed in this program. As a college student, I have not had the best class, study, or time management habits. Although, I got everything done, I was procrastinating and stressing out constantly. Since then, I have acquired many skills that I truly believe will help me in this program. I learned a lot from reading Lake and von Baeyer’s article, “Tips for Successful Students.” My strongest characteristic is active listening. This encompasses many of the tips listed in this article such as asking questions, taking good notes, talking about what I learned, and being active and responsible. I now understand the importance of actively being involved instead of just being another body in the classroom. These are the major things that I will capitalize on this time around that I used to push aside. One other characteristic that is crucial for my success in the program and in my career is time management. I used to take on too much at one time and try to help everyone before taking care of my own responsibilities. I have worked on my time management skills since then and am excited to see how much it will impact my success in school. My goal is to help people. In order to do that I needed to help myself by correcting my faults. This will help me gain more knowledge and be a better person and nurse. These skills will ensure success in my personal, professional, and school...

Me: My strongest characteristic related to the article "Tips for Successful Students," (Lake and von Baeyer, 2005), include the fact I am a very responsible individual. When in the classroom setting I always strived to find a seat in the first couple of rows, because I knew I'd benefit from avoiding anonymity - and this stemmed from being responsible and accountable for my self and my own education. I feel this will help me remain a successful student while transitioning from my RN to my BSN, RN. Lake and von Baeyer. (2005). Tips for Successful Students. ...6/24/2013 M1D2 Read Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students,” http://homepage.usask.ca/~clv022/success.htm. Also, review the characteristics of a successful student in the lecture. As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study? I am looking forward to widening my education as a RN. I hope during this time I have at GCU that I will also have a better understanding of what I want to do later on in my nursing career. I either want to become a NP, but I am not sure what specialty I want to go into or I want to do nurse education. A fear that I have is writing papers, but after learning all the resources that GCU provides and the free 30 minute tutoring a day that is available I think I will be ok. I will use all of these resources that are offered to me and after a few papers I hope that I will be feeling more confident about my writing skills. During my ADN program a fear of mine was time management. It was suggested that we do not work during or program but I had two part time jobs my first year. I was fearful that I would not do well in school and my greatest fear was that I would not graduate. The first semester was hard getting use to the tests and balancing my time. I managed my time well between work and studying and a group of us started a study group every Sunday that helped out a lot. Scheduling out when I would do things and sticking...

As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study? As stated by GCU (2011), a couple of the characteristics of professional practice are to carry a significant level of individual responsibility and accountability. I feel this is my strongest characteristic. As a nurse one has incredible responsibility. The person must be able to identify ailments that may arise during a course of treatment, or upon arrival to an acute care facility. One must be able to prioritize what needs to come first and what can wait until the patient is out of a danger zone situation. The nurse has to have accountability for the actions that they have taken. If a medication was ordered and not administered, the nurse must be able to give a valid reason the medication was held or be held accountable for the consequences of not administering said medication. I feel these are characteristics that I possess uphold throughout my career. I have never been the type of person that would back down from or shy away from my responsibilities. Also, I have always been held accountable for my actions. If I delegated a task to someone I have always known that it was my responsibility to make sure the task was completed and known that if it was not it was...

...Topic 1: Discussion Question 1 Read Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students." Also, review the characteristics of a successful student as explained in the lecture. As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study? I have always said that I am responsible for my own education. We only get out of school what we put into it. The instructor is there to present the information and provides a framework for understanding. It is my job as a student to fill in the spaces with my own understanding. I can clarify my understanding by asking questions, which I am poor at doing, and by doing research, which I do very well. I am not a good questioner. So, I really feel that my strongest characteristic is my responsibility and accountability. The best instructors I’ve had are the ones deemed “intimidating”. The same is true for my work environment. The best leaders were always a little scary to me. But once I got past the intimidation factor, I found that they actually had the most things to teach me. And that is when I would ask questions! Secondary characteristics that will help me be successful are my time management and note taking. I am forever writing things down. I find that if I hand write something, there is a connection between the writing of the information and my recall of it later. So if I want to remember something, I write it down. That tends...
