...Release of Report on Art Industry in India: Policy Recommendations April 2, 2010 Kolkata REPORT The visual art sector in India has grown exponentially in the recent years with both appreciation and market for Indian art expanding domestically and beyond the national borders. Nevertheless, it has also brought to fore the myriad of challenges that the art ecosystem in India is faced with. Be it for addressing the regulatory issues pertaining to art, beefing up the art education infrastructure, changing the way artworks are looked upon from ‘Instruments of wealth creation’ to ‘Intellectual Property’, a need is strongly felt for developing a holistic policy approach towards the sector as also for better enforcement of the existing policy instruments. It is against this backdrop, FICCI in association with Amarchand Mangaldas and Deloitte has prepared a first-of-its-kind report on ‘Art Industry in India: Policy Recommendations’. The Report makes an attempt to assess the existing legislative and taxation regimes pertaining to visual arts in India, identify the issues and challenges facing the art economy and outlines a roadmap for aligning our policies with the global best practices. “With exponential growth in the volume of art trade in India, what is needed is a broad framework for this sector.” said Mr. Jawhar Sircar, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, while releasing the Report at an Interactive Seminar organized by FICCI in Kolkata on April 2, 2010. ...Team background: ‘Loyola Lions’ is the school cricket team of, St. Xavier’s High School Loyola Hall, a popular school in Ahmedabad, India. The school participates in various sports events in the city. Mr. Lalit Modi coaches Loyola Lions. The team is on a winning streak lately and is considered among the top school cricket teams in the city. Example: The team is playing in the finals of the inter school cricket tournament. The opening batsman is injured, so the coach pulls up a substitute at the last moment and says to him, “You better play your best. If the team loses, you’re out. Now go and win the match”. The substitute is visibly nervous and replies “ok”. Leadership style: From the above example I conclude that the coach is a low-LPC task-oriented leader, whose main objective is the successful completion of the task at hand. He is unable to change his behavior and leadership style according to the situation. His initiating behavior is useful and somewhat preferred during coaching sessions, to bring out the best in the players. But, to use the same behavior on a substitute player, who has only played during coaching sessions, and that also, during an important match is uncalled for. That not only demotivates him but also puts unnecessary pressure on him, which affects his performance. The leader’s style does not agree with Fiedler’s theory and is totally uncalled for, in the given situation. Leadership situation classification: * Leader/member relation is good...

Political Factors That Affect Business………………………………………...4 1) The Case of Toyota Motor Corporation………………….….……..5 2) The Case of Taiwan………………………………..…………….…….…….8 3. Conclusion…………………………………………………………..…………………..…9 4. References……………………………………………………………………………..….10 Introduction For every business, internal factors, such as the company’s culture, vision, and its own products are extremely important for their success. However, the external factors are also so important that every business should pay special attention to them. A model has been invented to describe those external factors that influence business activities. This model is called the “PESTLE Analysis”, which is formally known as “PEST”, and was first invented by Francis Joseph Aguilar, in his book “Scanning the Business Environment”. PESTLE Analysis is a model to analyze external factors that may have impact on business activities. P stands for Political, E,S,T,L,E, stand for Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Ecological.(Francis, 1967) In this model, the first factor, the political factor, can impact most aspects of our society, whether for individuals or organizations, in developing countries or developed countries. The reality is that any strict policies, tense political situations, or even a little transformation may cause the business to suffer...

...THE IPL WAS WELL MARKETED Introduction IPL a franchised T20 cricket league consisting of 11 teams is the most shortened version of the cricket – 20 overs (or 120 balls) per side – and is played under a three hour timeframe. IPL was founded by BCCI and it’s into its eighth season and is very successful. IPL became the world’s most viewed T20 league in 2010. The estimated brand value of IPL was to be around US$7.2 billion in 2014. It bring forth players from different national teams, lured them with enormous pay checks through the process of auctioning, tie up with huge brands that advertised during the premium timeslots over the Televisions, introduced cheer leaders to the sport and got its way into the cricketing schedule. IPL catered to the mentality of the increasingly busy consumers by reducing the length of the game making it more innovative and enterprising. The T20 format was already existed in countries like the West Indies, England etc., but IPL brought in the exciting new feature of owning a franchise, as in the case of English Premier League, and have consumers support the franchises of their choice irrespective of players in the team. The experience was so tempting and extremely difficult to resist for a normal consumer. The shortened version of the game, the big names on the cricket field from all around the world, the celebrity factor and the cheer leaders made cricket fans hooked in front of the TV. What made IPL a success? * In India Cricket...

...Are High Hotel Tariffs Damaging India’s Tourism Potential? Industry analysts fear that the current boom which the Indian hospitality industry is witnessing will not last. The prime reasons cited are steep hotel rates and shortage of rooms. Leading tour operators, in conversation with Bhisham Mansukhani and Charmaine Fernz share their opinion on this current scenario... The Indian hospitality’s current occupancy boom, which revived the industry from its days in shambles, is now posing a serious threat to the supposedly resurgent inbound tourism sector. Inbound tour operators have unanimously cited both the steep Average Room Rates (ARRs) and shortfall in inventory as key deterrents that keep tourists from visiting India. Ashwini Kakkar Neeraj Ghei Himmat Anand Tour operators state that the problem is twofold, while the consequence is simply a low number of inbound tourists. Ashwini Kakkar, CEO and MD, Thomas Cook India Ltd “The problem is particularly serious in the metros. We are not just talking about incredibly high room rates which are disproportionate to the regional benchmark but the absolute non-availability of rooms at any cost. The implications of this in terms of the country’s economy, and Foreign Institutional Investment(FII) approach is far reaching and mostly detrimental. Our nearest and most formidable competitor, China has more than 100,000 rooms in its key industrial hub Shanghai. However India, which claims to draw parallels with it, has a paltry...

...Tue, Sep 28 03:37 PM June, 2009: An Indian woman with an MBA from a US university is interviewed by the CEO of an Indian telecommunications company on a muggy Friday afternoon at its Mumbai headquarters. Realising that she has no telecom experience whatsoever, the CEO asks her to work on a report on the sector over the weekend and email it to him on Monday. The lady does exactly that - and she does it so well that she gets the job. "The kind of research and analysis she did over a weekend was amazing. Only an MBA could do that," says the CEO - who never went to B-school himself. Every head honcho wants an MBA - to hire one, that is - even those heads of corporations who never came close to a B-school classroom. Indeed, the chief executives of many of India's most valuable companies didn't need that degree that's so coveted today to step into the corner room. Over two-thirds of the CEOs of the 30 companies that make up the benchmark index on the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Sensex, do not have an MBA, although a few did attend short management programmes at prestigious universities like Harvard and Wharton. The non-MBAs boast a delightful melange of qualifications. There are a lot of engineers, a sprinkling of doctorates, chartered accountants, cost accountants - and even an MA in English among these 30. There are only three Indian management graduates and a handful who have degrees from foreign universities. Another surprise - none of the Sensex companies is led by a graduate...
