Lamentation

David does a great job at directing the viewer’s eyes where he wants. Upon first looking at Gerard David’s lamentation (or as stated in the syllabus his deposition) the viewers eyes are directed towards St. John then to Christ himself. The main emphasis of the painting is the lamentation of Christ. The lamentation is emphasized by placing the characters in the fore ground in the center of the painting. The composition of the painting allows the viewer to see the whole painting while focusing on Christ’s lamentation. David made the painting so the viewer will see the background and the foreground as one then drawing the viewer’s attention to the foreground where St. John, Mary and Christ are.

There are a few objects that are fascinating or attractive. One of the objects is the white lily in the foreground with a yellow flower. Another thing that attracts the eyes is the circular object to the left of the lamentation, which looks like the thorny crown Christ wore. There are also the nails that held Christ to the cross and the tools used to pull out the nails. Some objects are puzzling like the city in the background most likely Jerusalem or the heavenly Jerusalem. This is a huge beautiful city coming out of the hills behind St. John. Another is Joseph of Arimathea wearing a turban and exotic clothing. Joseph of Arimathea clothing is the only clothing of that style in the painting.

There are many first responses to David’s painting discussed in the first paragraph. How David promotes these responses is shown throw the space, placement of the viewer, light, color, line and shape, and the composition. For example, David provides much depth in his painting. He illustrates an illusionistic 3-D boundless space. He does this by having objects (like the cross) leave the picture plane.
He has characters touching, with some in front of others and some behind others. He places the city of Jerusalem behind the main scene. He gives the painting mass and volume. David uses correct proportion of characters and objects. Another example of how David promotes these responses is by the placement of the viewer. He places the viewer level with the lamentation. This allows the viewer to feel as if he/she could walk right into the painting and become a part of it. He gives the painting a relatively low horizon line making the painting more life like to the viewer. Another way in which David promotes the responses he wants is by using light. David has more light in the foreground then he has in the background. This promotes the viewer to focus more on the foreground. David also uses neutral light. He has a more even, integrated effect. This allows the viewer to see the painting as if it were real. It makes it look more realistic. David also uses color to promote some of these responses. When the painting is first viewed the viewer notices the bright red of St. Johns robe. This brings the viewers attention to the foreground. The viewer also notices the bright white cloth Christ is on. This also promotes the same effect. As the viewer moves from the foreground to the background he/she notices the darkening of colors. This is not only to show depth but also to show what is the focus of the painting. This darkening draws the viewer away from the background and to the foreground. David uses lines to draw the viewer’s attention to the foreground also. When the painting is first viewed, if the viewer’s attention is drawn somewhere else then the foreground David uses the lines of the base of the cross and the characters to draw the attention to Christ. He brings the viewer’s attention down the cross then at an angle along the bodies toward the lower right corner where he has a white lily and a yellow flower. He also has a distinct horizon line. If the viewer’s attention is drawn too far to the right David uses the rolling hills of the tomb to bring the attention back to the foreground where Christ is. David uses composition to promote certain effects also. He has the main characters of the painting place in a rectangle standing on one corner. This is an unstable image. The image is also a mix of static and dynamic events. The foreground is static while Nicodemus enters the tomb, which is dynamic. This mix shows the grieving going on over the crucifixion of Christ. The essential structure of the painting can easily be grasped at first glace however there is more meaningful structure that requires closer observation.

This image serves as a teaching tool. During the time it was painted many people were illiterate and undereducated. This painting served as a way of teaching the bible, lamentation of Christ, to the people of the city or church. This image however does not do this by itself. The viewer must have knowledge of the bible in order to make the connection. The viewer would need to have preconceived notions of Christ’s life and the beginning of Christianity. David’s painting serves its function by visually explaining an event in the bible. It is not a story line but it is a scene painted from the bible. David ordered the objects and characters so that they could be easily interpreted.

Lamentation

...Foodie culture today represents everything related to food consumption, including every step involved with it before food gets served, Foodies conformed a group of individuals, specially young adults who appreciate the delivery and service of their food. Foodies care about where the ingredients come from, they are well informed of when new restaurants by famous chefs opens, the strategies that are involved in preparing the dishes, and about everything that happens before food is ready to eat, or as two experts in the industry June Jo Lee, and Melissa Abbott directors of the publication Culinary Insights defines it “the term foodie simply reflects those who appreciate food in all of its dimensions, ranging from peasant simplicity—and the joy of sharing and discovery—to palate-busting, transcontinental, modern cuisine.” Likewise, all the benefits the movement has to offer are often forgotten by the antagonists of the subculture that misrepresent and portray the foodie subculture in society as one deriving its interest with every step of the food process and attention to detail of food production and preparation as a negative way of experiencing food, and very frequently as a way of food “fanaticism” by its members. Sometimes even to the extend of commendation, like Jodi Helmer with her article “Is the foodie’ culture actually ruining food?” that tells an incomplete story of how the demands of the subculture when it comes to food quality and production of new foods are doing more...

Lamentation With Saint And A Donor

...When taking about painting, the works during Renaissance cannot be ignored. At that period, humanism was advocated, variety of painting whose themes were generally concerned with religion, especially Christianity had been created. The first painting I want to critique is Lamentation with Saint and a Donor. The composer did not use much contour which made the edge of the figures and objects clearly. Compared with the background plants, the colors using of figures are more brightly, which draws the viewers’ attention directly to them and will main focus on Jesus. Human’s figures are idealized and overlapped with each other, with the landscape in the background, create spacial depth. The painting uses linear perspective in order to emphasis...

Lamentations over Time

...Lamentations Over Time When analyzing a painting, or any art form, one must pay particular attention to the relationship between the work’s form, composition, and culture. These elements are important to understanding a piece’s purpose, and why it was produced in this particular time period. In this paper, the painting, Attributed to Quenten Metsys, Lamentation, c. 1520 will be analyzed and compared to Giotto’s Lamentation, c. 1305 to understand the differences in how these elements are portrayed when used in two different settings. These two paintings depict the same scene, but they are painted in two very different styles. Located in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the painting Attributed to Quenten Metsys Lamentation, c. 1520 can be recognized as a Northern Italian work of art due to the immense detail and vivid coloration that could only be achieved through the use of oil paint. When the 1300s began, two Renaissance movements took place in both the Southern and Northern regions of Italy. The popular and most commonly used medium during the southern Renaissance was fresco, where artists would paint straight on the wall. But, during the Northern Renaissance, oil paint was the more commonly used medium that was being experimented with. So, the fact that the Attributed to Quenten Metsys Lamentation, c. 1520 is an oil painting categorizes it as a northern piece of art. As this piece is further analyzed, it is revealed that there are ten figures in the foreground, and four...

Walt Whitman's Lamentation In The Bible

..."Were mankind murderous or jealous upon you, my brother, my sister? I am sorry for you, they are not murderous or jealous upon me, All has been gentle with me, I keep no account with lamentation, (What have I to do with lamentation?)" (section 44) The word mankind holds an importance in this section Whitman also shares his personal feelings of sorrow in this section. Lamentation refers to the book of Lamentation in the Bible that mainly shows people the outcomes of evil and sorrow in the world. Section 44 as a whole lets readers know who Whitman is and who people are over-all; it's mainly painting a picture for all mankind to relate to. Whitman address and empathizes those who have suffered through grief and pain in the first line, "Were...

Lamentation In The Arena Chapel By Giotto

...The piece I am looking at is the Lamentation in the Arena Chapel by Giotto. This painting was done in 1303 in Padua. This piece uses lines, colors, contrast and texture to bring the entire picture together to work as a whole piece. One element of form Giotto used are lines to make the appearance (also known as contour lines) of certain objects as well. The upper right corner has lines in many different directions to form the shape of a tree. Below that, the shape of the rock is established through the use of outlines. All of the people at the bottom of the piece are also created through the use of outlines. The angels in the upper part of the picture seem to have more of an outline underneath of them. Another element of form this piece uses...

Martha Graham Video Reflection

...Video Reflection How the technique seen and discussed in the video relates to choreographed excerpts seen in the video specifically Lamentation. How Martha personal words, and that of those who knew her, helped you better understand what she was trying to do in her choreography, and how she used her technique to facilitate theme? The video that I watched in class had a varied of different movement. The class video had a lot more different dance but I think their dance was structure more. The Lamentation video was an expressionist dance, which was focus on the next movement. The Lamentation video was limited to dance movement because she is stuck in a tricot. This dance expresses her feeling and was kind of telling a story. Dance doesn't have to be defined by gratuitous amounts of movement and this is an amazing form of art. I think Martha was trying to express an idea by looking at something very deep grief or sadness and she's brought it out. Not everybody look at things the same way as others. I know that there are things that are deeply meaningful for other people that aren't so for me. That many others or I don't 'get' something doesn't make it any less valid. If popularity were a measure of artistic validity then Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber would have to be considered the best artistic geniuses of all time. The Lamentation video touches me and brought back memories of a time when I lost a love ones. The way I interpret it, it actually is like you are trapped...

Old Testament Summaries

...Carmen Morrow February, 21, 2012 Bible104-Online Summaries of the books of the Old Testament Exodus Exodus contains two genres, narrative and law. Some of its main themes were suffering, loyalty, deliverance, law, judgment and worship. The book of exodus was written by Moses around 1450-1440 B.C. some of the main people in this book were Moses, Pharaoh, Aaron, and Joshua. The purpose of exodus was written to record the events of Israel’s deliverance from slavery. The book talks about how God spared Moses life and called upon him through a burning bush to free the people of Egypt from slavery. Exodus also speaks of the plague God placed upon Egypt and Pharaoh for ignoring his warning. In exodus Moses also presents all the Laws to the people at Mt. Sinai. And this book also mentions that Moses gave the people of Israel a tabernacle, priest, and worship instructions. Nehemiah The book of Nehemiah is a narrative history. It was said to be written between 445-420 B.C. Some themes associated with this book are obedience and opposition. The book of Nehemiah tells the story of Israel’s return from the Babylonian captivity and rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. In this book the word had reached Nehemiah that the temple needed to be rebuilt so he asked God to use him so he could save the city. God answered his prays and the kings allowed him to return to Jerusalem, where he was made governor. Nehemiah gained a lot of support throughout the process of building the wall....

Giotto’s Importance in the Renaissance

...can see in Lamentation as well as Madonna Enthroned. Lamentation is full of expressive emotion. It illustrates grief and tragedy. Every figure’s face is full of sadness and exemplifies the feeling that Giotto was trying to convey. The Virgin Mary embraces her dead son and her expression is the most penetrating throughout the piece. All of the angels look devastated and mournful. The people kneeling around Jesus give the sense of intimacy and create a greater focus on the Virgin Mary and her son. The emotion Giotto illustrates is true and real throughout every detail. Madonna Enthroned, also known as Ognissanti Madonna, illustrated Giotto using his specialized talents. He actually puts the Virgin Mary and Jesus in a realistic environment, instead of illustrating them as divine beings. This was not a familiar idea at the time. Giotto gave them a sense of worldly beings. The angels surrounding Madonna and baby Jesus look almost as if they are a choir singing around the two individuals. Giotto adds depth and perception to this piece, which adds to the realism of the illustration as a whole. Every detail in Giotto’s work was there for a reason and illustrated the exact emotion he was going for. Giotto helped introduce Naturalism to the world. He created a sense of authenticity to his work and was able to convey pieces with use of substance and dimensions. He used lines to created attention on what he wanted the viewers to focus on. One example is shown in Lamentation, the viewer’s...

History

...What is a prophet? A prophet is one that is inspired to interpret God’s word. A person that is spiritually gifted with profound moral insight and exceptional powers of expression. In addition, the word prophet also means a predictor; a soothsayer; a chief spokesperson of a movement or cause. There are three duties that a prophet must obtain: Firstly, they must function as preachers. Expounded and interpreted the Mosaic Law to the nation. It is their duty to admonish, reprove, denounce sin, threaten with the terrors of judgment, call to repentance, and bring consolation and pardon. Their activity of rebuking sin and calling for repentance consumed far more of the prophets’ time than any other feature of their work. Second, they function as predictors; who announced coming judgments, deliverances and events relating to the Messiah and his kingdom. Finally, the prophets act as watchmen over the people of Israel. For example, Ezekiel stood as a watchman on the walls of Zion ready to trumpet a warning against religious apostasy. He warned the people against political and military alliances with foreign powers, the temptation to become involved in idolatry and Canaanite cultural worship and the danger of placing excessive confidence in religious formalism and sacrificial ritual. While the prophets functioned in various ways as they communicated God’s message, they occupied one major role in Israel’s religious system; which was the role of a royal diplomat or prosecuting...

Art History Paper 1

...Art and Society: Renaissance to Modern Art Paper Assignment I Analysis of the Museum’s Painting The museum’s painting (Attributed to Quentin Massys, Lamentation, c. 1520) depicted a scene in which several grieving people were gathered around Christ after his crucifixion. The thing that stands out about this painting is that Christ is not adorned in fine clothing, nor does he even appear divine in any way. The surrounding people do not appear to be priests or divine, but are normal, plainly garbed, people. Upon moving my attention to other areas of the painting, I noticed the detailed landscape upon which this scene was set. The museum’s painting can be recognized as a northern painting, even without prior knowledge of the artist who painted it. Two distinct features in this painting are strongly indicative of a northern painting. One of these said features is the landscape setting. Northern works of art deal strongly with naturalism. The second indication that this may be a northern painting has to do with the people gathered around Christ. It is easy to tell that these individuals are merely common folk. A southern painting would most likely feature angels or clergymen gathered around Christ, but within paintings from the north was the concept of humanism. In lamens terms, humanism is merely a system of thought in which human beings are of utmost importance as opposed to the divine or supernatural. In summation, both styles of this painting, naturalism and humanism, are...

Auditory Imagery

...Individuals who have attached themselves with a place, such as what was described, may be able to relate themselves to the author or character, allowing them to go further in understanding the similarities between the two cultures, rather than the differences. The feeling of oppression can be best explained by one who has been oppressed, and varies in effect because of varying interpretations. Anyone else in the world may not be able to understand what oppression of Indian and Pakistani people is like, unless they undergo the same level of oppression."Be Near Me", attempts to present the feeling of oppression through auditory imagery with the quote," When it comes with cries of lamentation, with laughter and songs; its blue-gray anklets of pain clinking with every step" (Faiz 553). The sounds, such as lamentation and the clinking of anklets, present a universally understandable picture of the pain behind the oppression, giving people who may have not understood before, the opportunity to understand that oppression. Auditory imagery in Indian and Pakistani literature allows readers to process a new perspective, however auditory imagery isn't alone in presenting this perspective. Working with auditory imagery to paint a perspective for the reader is visual imagery. Visual imagery combines well with auditory imagery because while auditory imagery gives the sounds to imagine, visual imagery gives what one would see, allowing readers to step even further into the shoes of the author and...

Partial O. T. Leadership Principles

...Deuteronomy Principle: Great leader has to obey the Lord and live by his commandments in order to receive the Lord’s promises. Key Verse: Deuteronomy 11:26-27: Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse. The blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today. Explanation/Illustration of the Principle Obedience helps a leader grow closer to God. A leader must be obedient in order to grow and know God’s will. He shows evidence of his relationship, faith and love for God by doing God’s will. When a leader loves God, his actions show where his heart is. He then, understands God’s love for his people and the significance of God giving his only begotten son to suffer and die on the cross and he want to obey God– because of his love. God wants the leader to be obedient because he knows what is best for him. He also wants the leader to live a good life of obedience, holiness and purity. Obeying God’s commands points to the shape of a leader’s life as a whole, to the consistency of that leaders. He must strive to personify God’s love and character.[1] Joshua Principle: Great leaders must possess characteristics of courage and faith and show leadership abilities. Key Verse: Joshua 1: 6-7:  Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according...

Mannerism and Baroque

...Mannerism and Baroque Western Governors University Literature, Arts and the Humanities: Analysis and Interpretation IWT1 May 8, 2013 Mannerism and Baroque If you study art history at any length, you will become aware of the many different periods and their individual characteristics. There are prime times throughout art history that the general populations can easily identify such as Renaissance or Impressionism. They might even be able to name a few of the artists or their artwork. As you delve further into the rich history of art, you start to notice many deviations in the style of artists who are transitioning into a new artistic period. At first look, you might not see the subtle difference in the art from the norm from that period. An overlooked period in art history is the period between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, the Mannerism period. This period was actually a rejection of the High Renaissance era. Mannerism is the artistic period from 1520- 1600. The word mannerism is derived from the Italian word maneria, which means style or stylishness. “Art began to lose its momentum at the end of the High Renaissance, beginning of the Mannerism period because it coincided with a period of upheaval that was torn by the Reformation, plague, and the devastating Sack of Rome.” ("The National Gallery of Art," 2013, para. 2). One of the greatest reasons for the shift in artistic style is that the Catholic Church was in chaos. The Catholic Church...
