There are often some huge problems by judging other people way to handle difficult times. In the short story “Land of the lost” by Stewart O´Nans we land in the middle of the main characters life, which is basically build up by the judgment of her surroundings. Like millions of people her life has reach a part where it has taken a descending track. She has lost almost everything of value. She lives alone with a dog and has a pointless job without any meaning to her at all. But who has not tried that? People are so often trying to evaluate how the man next door lives his life and then compare it with their own. But who gives us the right to be judgmental about how people live their lives and what they believe in?

The main character works as cashier at a market called BI-LO in Perry. From the start we get the picture of a woman with a very low social status. Because of her ruined marriage and the separation with her two sons she is tied up by a closed case about a murder. Her low status at work causes correction of her behavior at work because of her ongoing discussion about the murder with the co-workers and customers. “…Discussing it with her co-workers and customers – so much so that her manager had to ask her to stop” (p. 8. ll. 4-5). Her low status at the job does also have an effect on her private live because she feels very surplus in the world. The main character see herself as something dispensable, and her sole companion is her one and only dog Ollie. With Ollie as her only close friend she does not really feel attached to anybody. “…One else needed her. Just Ollie” (p. 9. ll. 62). She is in many ways social lost and dysfunctional in society. This could be one of the main reasons why the murder case and finding the dead girl absorb her so much. She is so caught up by the case because she follows it from its beginning. She starts taking notes and

Land of the Lost

...Summary Land of the Lost by Stewart O'Nan is a story about a woman who, left alone with her dog, decides to search for the body of a murdered girl she read about in the newspaper. Her grown children think she's losing her marbles, but everyday she sets out to find the missing girl. What is the meaning of life? This is an existential question that has been asked again and again throughout time and will probably never get one true answer. The only answer that can be given might be that you have to come up with your own answer. In the short story “Land of the Lost” the main character tries to find her own meaning of life by taking up a new occupation, but people just look down on what she is doing. We often judge other people, but when are we really in the position to rightfully do so? In Stewart O’Nans short story “Land of the Lost”, the main character is constantly judged by her surroundings, but maybe they just do not understand her. She has a meaningless job, lives alone with her dog and has nothing to do in her spare time. When she decides to take action and actually do something, she is, however, judged unrightful-ly crazy.

Modsvaret...

...Philippines Law Historical Overview Introduction The Philippines, an archipelago of 7,107 islands (about 2,000 of which are inhabited), with a land area of 115,600 sq m, has a population of 76.5 m. Some 87 major dialects are spoken all over the islands. English and Filipino are the official languages with English as the language of instruction in higher education. According to the 2000 census, the functional literacy rate is 83.8%. Agriculture constitutes the largest single sector of the economy. The country has a total labour force of 64.5%. The Philippine legal system is aptly described as a blend of customary usage, and Roman (civil law) and Anglo-American (common law) systems. The civil law operates in areas such as family relations, property, succession, contract and criminal law while statutes and principles of common law origin are evident in such areas as constitutional law, procedure, corporation law, negotiable instruments, taxation, insurance, labour relations, banking and currency. In some Southern parts of the islands, Islamic law is observed. This particular legal system is the result of the immigration of Muslim Malays in the fourteenth century and the subsequent colonization of the islands by Spain and the United States. Historical Background Philippine legal history may be categorized according to the various periods in the political history of the country: the pre-Spanish period (pre 1521); the Spanish regime (1521-1898); the Philippine...

Changing Business Models

...Employment Law Dr. Tuck GBUS 4953 Final Paper Matt Stambaugh Business of the modern world has changed. There has been a shift in the way businesses conduct their business. In the past, the business mentality used to be focused only on profits. As long as profits were increasing and money was coming in, things were going well. Whenever profits were falling, something was wrong and had to be changed. Of course, companies still need to turn a profit to keep their doors open, but the way in which they have changed is that many of the businesses out there realize that there are other aspects to success than higher profits. Things are not solely about the traditional “bottom line” any more. What has sparked this change in thinking? If companies have done the same thing for hundreds of years then why change now? The answer to these questions is the environment. People are now more aware of the impact that businesses are having on the environment. Businesses are aware that the business they are conducting is not done in a vacuum. All of their decisions affect the planet as a whole. The impact can range from pollution, deforestation, depletion of natural resources, and everything else in between. The environment has also caused businesses to change in not just trying to pollute less, but it has also been the catalyst for changes in things such as new legislation, innovation, and even the development of underdeveloped countries. Before these topics can be discussed it is important...

Adam Smith

The Sandwich Factory

...Vietnamkrigen Studieretningsprojektet 2008/2009 Abstract The study examines the American involvement in the Vietnam War, and the different consequences that this caused. During the war in Vietnam, a lot of American citizens got more and more upset about the war itself, thinking that it was meaningless for American soldiers to die for a cause that they did not believe in. Also the Medias massive covering of the war enlarged the protests, and pictures and videos of dead or massacred Vietnamese civilians aroused great disapproval in the Western world of the American government. The paper also contains an analysis of how the book “The Things They Carried” shows the influence that the war had on the soldiers. The author of the book, Tim O’Brien, was a soldier in Vietnam himself, and in the book he tries to give a true picture, both of the war in general, and of the war that he experienced himself. The study discusses whether or not the USA has learned something from their failure in Vietnam, compared to how they handle the war in Iraq. It concludes that the Vietnam War had a great impact on the way of thinking for many young men and woman from that time, and that it had a horrible influence on the soldiers – who had very high suicide rates among them in the time after the war. It also concludes that there are too many similarities between Vietnam and Iraq, and that this can be a bad thing for the USA. Indholdsfortegnelse Abstract 1 Indledning 2 Krigen på hjemmefronten...
