While the name grew from Minerva’s underground name, it also took on a symbol of hope, change, and transformation behind the suppression of the Dominican people. Throughout the novel each sister represents a different stage of the butterfly life cycle: Dede as an Egg, Patria as a caterpillar, Maria as a Pupa, and Minerva as an adult; each respective stage symbolizes the different levels of courage and sacrifice devoted to their country’s freedom from tyrant Rafael Trujillo. Alvarez uses symbolism in “The Time of the Butterflies” to suggest that the price of freedom paid by the Mirabal Sisters was not worth the cost when butterflies have such short lives. Butterflies have grown to symbolize a variety of different meanings throughout history and culture. This book is a great book to read.The Mirabals were farmers in the Dominican Republic . The sisters grew up in a middle class, cultured environment raised by Enrique Mirabal Fernandez and Mercedes Reyes Camilo. The four sisters married and raised families. Unlike her sisters, Dede never attended college, and instead worked as a homemaker and helped out run the family business in agriculture and Cattle. "Family is all you have sometimes." The Mirabal sisters are a very interesting group of people. I will be comparing Patria and and Minerva. Minerva and Patria are both pretty girls. They were both married, and we're both very sensitive and nice. Now in the book the sisters go through a lot of hard times. They almost get killed and some do get killed. It was almost as if they were slaves being held captive by a white man yet it was them being held captive by Trujillo. Back then the girls weren't treated as girls they were basically treated like a man if you would say so. But it seems as if as long as they have each other they'd be fine. ...The Sister Who Survived In the novel In the Time of the Butterflies, Dedé was greatly impacted by her sisters’ involvement in the revolution. Dedé's life has been full of worry due to the revolution. After her father tells the fortunes, Dedé realizes that her’s is the only fortune he really told. “A chill goes through her, for she feels it in her bones, the future is now beginning. By the time it is over, she doesn't want to be the only one left to tell their story.”(17). This quote describes the moment she began to worry about the effects of Trujillo. Dedé is only a child when she already starts to worry about the affects the revolution will have in her life even though it hasn't even started. Later in her life, Dedé and her sister, Minerva, start to hang around with Lío Morales. Lío was already involved with the revolution, which caused the girls to start getting involved as well. “But without a plan Dedé's courage unraveled like a row of stitches not finished with a good, sturdy knot.”(95) Dedé is going through so much she can't deal with it anymore. Many credit this to the sacrifices the Mirabal sisters made but there are other things that are accredited for Trujillo’s fall. Various opinions regarding the sacrifices of the sisters have arisen shortly after the end of the revolution. While there are a large number of people that argue that the extreme sacrifices of the sisters were ineffectual to the revolution, others argue that they are the one and only reason that many people didn’t die. Minerva losing her license to practice law, and Minerva, Patria, and Mate abandoning their children were all justified as they meaningfully contributed to this revolution. One one the many sacrifices made by the sisters was in regards to Minerva’s law degree. She got a law degree after four long years but then got her license to practice law rejected by Trujillo. Minerva lost this ability to practice law only because of Trujillo rejecting her application. Trujillo’s hatred for Minerva arose when she slapped him at a private dinner party and then refused to do some things that she was asked to.
