...such, many research studies are being conducted to support the improvement of health in order to increase quality of life. Grady (2003) discusses five main research themes that are utilized in today’s world, one of them being “changing lifestyle behaviors for better health” (p190). Exposure to latex is the leading cause of the latex allergy epidemic. According to the Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare in British Columbia (2006), 17% of healthcare workers, in Canada, have this allergy. These statistics are growing which has led nurses and other health care professionals towards studying the topic of latex allergies in the health care profession in order to achieve a greater understanding. Of particular interest is unnecessary exposure to latex, which puts clients and workers at risk. Questions are now being asked “Why are latex gloves and other latex containing equipment such as catheters still being used when there are a variety of alternatives to latex products? Why do health care workers continue to be put at risk for latex exposures. Loiselle, Profetto-McGrath, Polit and Beck (2004) state “Nurses are increasingly engaged in disciplined studies that benefit the profession and its patients” (p. 5). In other words, as nurses and with their numbers, why are they not coming together to address the issue of latex allergy. Korniewicz, Masri, Broyles, Martin and O’Connell (2002) in their study, discuss the rise in latex allergies...

...CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES Related Literature Adhesive is any substance that is capable of holding materials together in a functional manner by surface attachment that resists separation. “Adhesive” as a general term includes cement, mucilage, glue, and paste—terms that are often used interchangeably for any organic material that forms an adhesive bond. Inorganic substances such as portland cement also can be considered adhesives, in the sense that they hold objects such as bricks and beams together through surface attachment, but this article is limited to a discussion of organic adhesives, both natural and synthetic. (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/5823/adhesive) Fish glue is often made by heating the skin or bones of fish in water. It can also be made from part of the fish’s air bladder which, in the case of glue made from sturgeon, is called isinglass. Adhesives made from fish, as well as hide glue made from other animals, were sometimes used in ancient Egypt. They are still used in art, for shoe and furniture repair, and to preserve old manuscripts. Hide glue is typically manufactured from the skin of non-oily fish. During medieval times in Europe, fish glue was often used to repair animal-based sheets called parchments, which were used for writing. It was also used in painting materials by some artists in China. Paintings and drawings were often coating with fish glue in the 1800s. While the glue by itself is typically brittle...

...Brothel Paper During an “internship in family planning and human sexuality at Emory University that required her to develop a public health study” (p 5), Alexa Albert, decided to “investigate brothel prostitutes’ condom-use practices” (p 5). The fact that only one state, Nevada, allowed legalized prostitution was an incentive for Alexa. There were growing concerns of AIDS in the United States and the fact that “Nevada licensed brothel prostitution, with specific ordinances established to safeguard the health and safety of the public” (p 4) was an appealing factor for her to do her research study. Part of the ordinance required all licensed brothel prostitutes to use latex condoms for all sexual activity and mandatory testing “for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV” (p 4) were required of all the women. Alexa wanted to focus on the latex condoms since “hard data on the efficacy of condom use in preventing HIV infection was scarce, and the issue was complicated by the very real problem of condom slippage and breakage” (p 5). Her focus on the Nevada brothels made since, because the women working in the brothels had multiple sex partners yet there were no reports of HIV transmission within this community. By staying at the Mustang Ranch and talking to the prostitutes she managed acceptance from a community where non-working women in the field was normally not tolerated. By collecting the prostitutes used condoms she was on her way in analyzing data for her study...

...Lightweight Geopolymer Concrete with EPS Beads Introduction This research paper is mainly concerned with the production of lightweight geopolymer concrete using expanded poelystyrene (EPS) beads as part replacement of the normal aggregates for precast building components as well as in sandwich construction, the information on properties of lightweight geopolymer concrete with different percentage of EPS bead aggregate is given and it is also compared with the with the existing guidelines (ASTM C 90). Furthermore, performance of EPS/geopolymer concretes is discussed in relation to their flammability and insulation characteristics (Techniques used; DSC (Differential scanning calorimetry, based on heat difference), TG/DTA (Differential thermal analysis, based on temperature difference) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) under quasi-isothermal mode). Geopolymers as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement for concrete is used because it has high early compressive strength, low drying shrinkage, good fire resistance and superior durability in aggressive environment compared to Portland cement concrete. Geopolymers are produced through reactions between the alumino-silicate reactive materials (metakaoline, slag, fly ash etc) and their strength and microstructural properties are studied under fresh and hardened states. The selection of EPS bead aggregate was made mainly due to its low density, closed cellular structure, hydrophobic and energy absorbing characteristics...

...Introduction: This research tackles about an academic format specified in the Publication of the Manual American Psychological Association, a style guide that offers academic authors guidance on various subjects for the submission of papers to the publications of APA. The APA states that the guidelines were developed to assist reading comprehension in the social and behavioural sciences, for clarity of communication and for "word choice that best reduces bias in language. on the structure of research papers of various kinds, spelling rules, an author-date reference style, construction of tables and graphs, plagiarism, formatting of papers, and much more. APA style is widely used, either entirely or with modifications, by hundreds of other scientific journals (including medical and other public health journals), in many textbooks, and in academia (for papers written in classes). Discussion: In the interest of transparency (and following the same procedure that was followed for the fifth edition), staff posted all of the corrections online in a single document on October 1, 2009, and shortly thereafter alerted users to the existence of the corrections in an APA blog entry. On the same day the corrections were posted, an individual posting to the Educational and Behavioural Sciences Section mailing-list of the American Library Association alerted readers to what she described as the "many" errors in the first printing, and speculated that "some but not all" would be corrected...

...A Guide for Writing a Technical Research Paper Libby Shoop Macalester College, Mathematics and Computer Science Department 1 Introduction This document provides you with some tips and some resources to help you write a technical research paper, such as you might write for your required capstone project paper. First, congratulations are in order– you are embarking on an activity that is going to change the way you think and add to the overall body of human knowledge. The skill of gathering information, deciding what is important, and writing about it for someone else is extremely valuable and will stay with you for the rest of your life. Because we humans have been doing this for quite some time, we have some reasonably standard forms for technical research papers, which you should use for your capstone. You should do this because your paper will better understood by readers who are familiar with this form. Before you can begin writing your paper, you need to have a sense for what research entails, so I’ll start there. Then I will give you some tips about writing, including connecting with your readers, defining your topic, the format of your paper, and how to include references from the literature. I am a computer scientist, so be aware that parts of this paper are biased toward my discipline. 2 What is Research? A short definition of research, as given by Booth, Colomb, and Williams (Booth et al., 1995) is “gathering the information you need to answer...

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study The papaya, papaw, or pawpaw is the fruit of the plant Carica papaya, the sole species in the genus Carica of the plant family Caricaceae. It is native to the tropics of the Americas, perhaps from southern Mexico and neighbouring Central America. It was first cultivated in Mexico several centuries before the emergence of the Mesoamerican classical civilizations. Papaya leaves contains coumarin, papain and iron which are the three main essentials that increase blood platelets. Dengue viruses, mosquito-borne members of the Flaviviridae family, are the causative agents of dengue fever. Dengue is the most important emerging viral disease of humans that in recent decades has become a major international public health concern. There is a widespread of dengue cases in every corner of our country. Many people can’t afford to go to hospitals just to get medical assistance especially indigent families. Therefore because of the expensive disbursement in prestigious hospitals such as medicines needed to cure dengue, affected people die without being aided. Most people know about papayas but not many know about the amazing health benefits of Papaya Leaves. Papaya Leaves contain powerful healing compounds that are very important for great health and vitality... and for curing cancer and dengue fever. With the rising number of people catching dengue fever, the demand for papaya leaf juice has soared. The extract of raw papaya leaf...

...nurses in the Philippines are described. Cross-sectional data were collected through a self-administered survey during the Philippine Nurses Association 2007 convention by De Castro, A.B, et al. during the Philippine Nurses Association 2007 convention. Measures included four categories: work-related demographics, occupational injury/illness, reporting behavior, and safety concerns. Approximately 40% of nurses had experienced at least one injury or illness in the past year, and 80% had experienced back pain. Most who had an injury did not report it. The top ranking concerns were stress and overwork. Filipino nurses encounter considerable health and safety concerns that are similar to those encountered by nurses in other countries. Future research should examine the work organization factors that contribute to these concerns and strengthen policies to promote...

...community teaching experience exercise, I taught a group of twelve students at Park Vista High School about Chlamydia as one of the most common STD. The exercise took about 45 minutes in which I introduced the topic and discussed the issues broadly and distributed pamphlets that I had prepared. The lesson centered on teaching them about ways of protecting themselves against this disease and its spread, symptoms and signs of the disease, screening and testing and also basic information about the disease. The most effective method of protection against the disease among high school students is abstaining from sex as unsafe sex is the most common method of transmission. The other way is through practicing safe sex by using latex condoms. Studies have shown that latex condoms are better than natural membrane condoms. Polyurethane female condoms have also been found to be effective. Signs and symptoms of the diseases are not well pronounced in some cases hence individuals need to be regularly screened for the infection which is recommended twice a year for the sexually active youth. Where symptoms are pronounced in females, they include vagina irritation, vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain and a burning feeling with urination. The disease is best handled through early screening and treatment. Delayed detection of the disease can lead to complications that can appear later in life such as barrenness. These complications are similar to those for other supposedly serious STD’s such...
